"the vulcan ..... gives me goose bumps wen ever i hear it"
The famous Vulcan 'howl' isn't made by the engine - it's the air being sucked against it's will (oohh er, missus!!) into the air intakes in a vertical climb...
Gave me a stinking hard-on at Duxford last summer!!!! |

Guy in my apartment block has a Nissan 360Z Nismo (the full pack as sold in Japan only). When he starts that up on a Saturday morning (to go to ASDAs!!) all the blokes in the garage at the time just turn and stare in appreciation.... It's like an automotive symphony...
But for actual jet engine noise, standing on the viewing platform on the Queens Building by T2 at Heathrow (in the days when you could when we weren't all potential terrorists!) watching Concorde throttle up and take off takes some beating... Such a waste.... Should have kept one flying just so we could stick two fingers up to the Yanks... cos they never had one |

Nothing and I mean NOTHING beats the sound of an ice cream van driving up the road on a hot summer day knowing when that chime goes its Mivys, Zooms, Screwballs, 69,s and the good old Fab's to tease your taste sensations. |

Car - Ford 427 Edelbrock side oiler with a couple of turbos hanging off it in a Shelby Cobra on full song
Bike - GT750 kettle firing down a single spanny - or possibly a MK8 RG500 after Bob Farnham has fettled it
Plane - Vulcan - same power plant as Concorde only it runs different waste gates but a Sopwith Camel is a thing of sound and vision and a close second. |

Bike - My old Beckett tuned RD 400 with Micron cans on
Plane - Supermarine Spitfire "
Small can 'crons, series 2 - possibly the nastiest cackle possible - ever, EVER! but fuck me they sounded good on song.
Useless for performance though - Dave Swarbrick is the man for spannies |

Best aero engine ww2 has to be the rolls royce merlin powered the lancaster 4 of those running sweetly oh yessy on the spit the single sound as it does a low level pass. post www2 has to be concorde thundering down the tarmac at twilight re-heat on and climbing from behind the glow as the afterburner does it work .
my most memorable time was my passing out parade at raf swinderby in 1980 a flypast by an avro vulcan soaring over our heads then sharply banking and climbing engines on full throttle when i heard that i knew i had made the right choice.
motorcycle has to be a v-twin engine thats raw sound as the 2 _ylinders give that distinctive low roar
car well i would have to say aany american 50's or 60's fitted wih a modern hemi engine |

The RAF keeps the BoBF in the air - why the hell they can't keep the Vulc up there (and get a Victor - the meanest looking son of a bitch to ever take to the skies imho up there too) is beyond me. They are part of MY childhood and everyone of my age group. It's not just what happened during WW2 that is important to remember... Rant over - apologies for it not being Thursday.. |

Motorcycle - The deep throb of a Harley

Bike wise, I used to race motocross, and the noise my KTM 495 made was awsome, big aircooled single _ylinder on full chat made the hairs fall out of the back of your neck with it's witch like cackle!
Then ran an autograss racing car with a highly modified Ford V6 3.0 with a tiny flywheel and unsilenced and tuned exhaust, sounded great.
Then it has to be the Merlin engine, spitfire or Lancaster |

Its not really the car or the engine that makes the sound its all down to what exhaust is fitted. A good V8 with low baffles and anti vibration fittings with a pico sound variable exhaust takes a lot of beating. |

So it's the exhaust, not the engine layout, cubic capacity etc?
Can I get one of these to fit Viv's 1.2 Corsa?
They neighbours late at night when she gets home will think we have won the lottery and bought a Pagani Zonda!
To a basically standard car a fancy chav exhaust will just be noisy and offer NO performance gain at all and indeed could make it worse! |

Harley Davidson aka hardly ableson or barbiebike. Only three problems with those bikes, don't stop, don't go and won't go round corners. Apart from those minor issues great . Triumph t955i with open carbon fibre can is THE bike noise. Bar none. Cars.....erm Ferrari v12 have an appeal. |

Car, Aston DB5, sheer music
Bike, Ducati 996 with Tergonomi pipes
Aircraft, must have two for this one. The RR Merlin and the Vulcan. One can't possibly decide between the two having spent time up close and personal with both. |

"I loved Concorde at take off"
Oh yes. Used to live near Heathrow. Was a p
Sad day when she was retired
car. Oh I love v engines. And really can't pick just one. I love her noise of a big v12. However love v6 noise too. And v8
Favourite of my own cars was my alfa v6.And it llooked beautiful under the bonnet too
Although I do love the burble of a flat four too. Tunnel runs are divine in these cars.
Bikes. I like the Honda v twin. Or the throaty note of the Ducatis. But also love the scream of a Honda fireBlade.
To be honest I like most decent engine noises.
But v engines win for me. Mmm |

"If we are throwing locomotives in the mix its got to be a Deltic ! Two 16 _ylinder napier delta engines at full chat up stoke bank on an east coast Express "
Ah! Somebody talking sense at last!
I`m going to suggest a pair of Class 37s too (English Electric V12s)
BTW the Deltic engines are 18 _ylinder, not 16 as there`s three banks of 6 Alot of the sound from them comes from them being 2 strokes! |
