Hokuto Shinken is the best!
‘AT-AT-AT-AT-AT-AT-AT-AT-TAAAA!!!!!’
But seriously, in my experience, the practitioner and their resolve, speed etc is more important than the actual art that they are practicing if we’re referring to actual combat
Having said the above, some martial arts are more practical in self defence scenarios than others…. |

I've always enjoyed no go bjj but I don't think there is a best art really
You want to be well rounded ideally
Stand up is boxing or muay Thai
For grappling I think amateur wrestling or judo
For on the ground it's judo or bjj
I think the self defense styles like aikido and krav maga etc are fine against someone untrained but they'll come up short against a good boxer / wrestler |

If you want it for self defense, then if it doesn't have live sparring it's just theory. We learnt in the early 90s the reality of the ones that really work in real situations. As has been said you need striking, grappling, takedowns.
For what it's worth
30 years of martial arts
Boxing
Yoshinan Aikido 3rd Dan
BJJ Brown Belt |

Muay Thai 9.5/10 the king of striking arts imo
BJJ effectiveness 9.2/10. Homoerotic rating 9.5/10
Wrestling 7/10. Double leg on pavement 2/10
Judo 7/10 because no one walks around in pjs these days. |

The best martial art I learned (and it works very well against opponents of any size) was rapid fire with my R4 assault rifle. 10x35 round magazines and you're ready for anything. Knock, cock and unblock to clear jams, reload, and you're good to go again.
(* effectiveness varies against APCs, tanks and fast moving aircraft)
(** from limited to totally useless) |

"I do Krav Maga and I've found that to be by far the best martial art for real world situations.
All are good and have their place though.
Easily foiled by a concealed groin guard! 8/10"
You forgot to mention the welders mask to avoid the eye gouging. |

How often do you need to resort to using it?
Real world situations,I mean are you regularly in situations where you need to fishhook someone? |

I study Goju Ryu and it’s served me well during the odd occasion I’ve had to call upon it. But every situation is different. I was once mugged at a cash machine. Guy spun me round, head butted me and ran off with my cash before I knew anything about it |

The way of harmony.
The best martial art is the one you never have to use.
Wax on, wax off.
It's like a finger pointing to the moon, don't concentrate on the finger or you'll miss all the heavenly glory that surrounds it. |

Thankfully not very often, but I have had to use it. I've done other martial arts too, so it goes hand in hand.
I think because of a few wacky videos on YouTube people scoff at Krav. But the fact is it's constantly evolving and incorporating the best bits of other martial arts... Minus any flowery fluffy bits that don't work in the real world. Why do a spinning heel kick to look good when sticking your thumb in someone's eye could work better and is quicker which enables you to see who else is involved or get away.
It goes without say that alot is down to the individual, as with all disciplines, so to say a certain art falls down when met with a boxer or someone from BJJ say isn't really correct as you don't know how good that person is at striking or grappling too.
Every martial art is great, be it just for fitness, for self confidence, for self defense or even just for the social aspect and making a few new friends. |

Another reason why some people don't like it with all that's going on. Madness. |

I found dirty fighting worked best for me. I used to carry a small bag of metal shot blasting dust in a small bag in my pocket, throw that at the face then kick the shit out of them and run away. It worked most times when people thought, they could have a go at beating up a scouser.
I don't think many martial arts have a blocking move for that. |

The age old debate! In a one on one controlled fight? Defending yourself on the street? A style is only as good as the person doing it.
I have a black belt in ju-jitsu and black belt in kenpo karate. Also some experience of wrestling and mma. You take the best bits from each one and use it when necessary so mma is the best really.
Some instructors are full of shit, I went to a few wing chung classes with an old girlfriend for support
The instructor put up stance and told me he could defend against any attack. I double legged him then summited him
His explanation was that they didn't use leg take-downs???? |

Fought muay Thai for 9 years nearly and done jiu jitsu around 25 years on and off so I'd say them two mixed is best x
But I might be biased
Anyway it ain't about what's best it's what's best for you , I've ended up with missing teeth broken my feet around 6 times and have a massive rotator cuff injury from jiu jitsu
But I wouldn't change a thing x best fun I ever had |

I've had a couple on Ninjutsu lessons and they seemed to cover all of the above. |

It is concerning in some regards what people perceive as effective (and why that is) and some of the self defence stuff that is packaged up and peddled to women that actually gives a false sense of protection |

Yeah I hate that. You’ll get yourself in more trouble walking the street thinking your tough because you did some street class
I did boxing for about a decade and even the beginners men weren’t allowed to spa with the experience woman coz they’d get throttled |

Depends what you want from it. For fitness, fun and confidence the nearest one that you can afford is probably the best. If it's self defence then go to a self defence class not a martial arts one. If you're confronted in a real world situation and attempts at de escalation fail then you're left with violence - bash and dash.
