Our Drs has an hour window of getting through in the morning - if you don’t then they turn the phone off…they fill their quota for the day and shut up shop

It’s a completely different way of working now since Covid.

Yeah I’ve noticed that too and you don’t even get an appointment! They call you for a phone appointment. So many people must give up. I can’t as it’s for my daughter but if it was me I wouldn’t bother.

Do you get the option of a call back? Mine is same and I was caller 54 the other day. Got a call back in 20 mins and sorted. The issue I have is getting passed the engaged tone. I just looked and had made 63 attempts before getting through and able to select the call back option

Carlisle usually

I was drinking with my Dr's receptionist friend last night. She was saying now that the econsult is constantly available all the small things are done through there, so all phone calls are at least 20 minutes long because its the ones that can't be done that way and everyone is waiting forever.

Sounds pretty rubbish for everyone.

No. Just says please hold. They’ll be nothing left when I get through. I’m just hoping they’ll get her in as it was NHS direct last night who told me to go today and they said they’d send a note over

Near Abercynon

Do you remember when all those covid testing centres sprung up all over the country. Often managed by the Army?

I think we need that for GP services for a while to clear the backlog. Fill them full of doctors, medics, pharmacists, nurses, labs... everything we need and use good logistics to get the throughput right up.

I had an appointment to see my Heart consultant last December, it has been postponed 3 times and is now set for this coming December, I am not holding my breath.

Have also given up on my GP, used to be so simple prior to Covid two minutes on line and appointment confirmed, that service s now switched off

Sadly the UK has one of the worst shortage of doctors. Has been bad for long time and, without making any political statement, has worsened partly due to brexit as thousands of doctors left but also lots of other reasons including covid. Attitudes and ways of doing things after covid also changed giving practices almost an excuse to avoid face to face appointments. The service is often quite appaling tbh and it should not feel like they are doing you a favour when they give you an appointment. Some reception staff also have a terrible attitude rather than empathy for patients. Of course it is not just gps but dentists too which is often impossible for sime people to get one. As for consultant appointments, well best leave it there. Even if you get one even after sometimes waiting gor years, the quality of the consultation varies enormously to say the least depending on whether is just a visiting consultant who has not even read your records properly or an established one who has taken the time to look at your history properly. It's a mess that needs sorting but please don't say it should be privatised as that is not the answer as neother is private medical insurance unless you get that at birth. Time for a bit of late breakfast.

I agree but people are paying to get treatment and it’s wrong that they should have to. We did in the end for my youngest. It turned out the best thing we ever did but we shouldn’t have had to do that! People will do it, of course they will. They will get loans/re-mortgage/anything they can. It’s wrong.

At my doctors you aren't allowed to go to reception. They don't deal with any enquiries at the desk. You complete the online form or spend the morning on the phone trying to get through

Normally, although not today. Don't know why, maybe everyone is already dead because they couldn't get an appointment last week? I called up bang on opening (8.30, no point trying later) which still normally means you're in double figures or it just fails to go through due to being overwhelmed. I was caller number 2 and after about 2 seconds waiting I got through and an appointment for today.

Our old docs wouldn't let you book in person, unless you'd just come out of an appointment and the doc "said come back next week...." Then you'd ask to see Dr. X next week and they'd tell you there's nothing bookable for 6 weeks

Last month my husband asked me to try and book him an appointment at the GPs. I figured it was a waste of time. Their phone line opens just when I'm taking the kids to school and by the time I'm home there's never any appointments left. But I phoned anyway at 9.10. He had an appointment 2 hours later, a blood test that afternoon, a follow up appointment the following week and with a few weeks all his B12 injections were done. It was truly amazing.

Ahh, I pressed post by accident.

Anyway, I was going to say I don't know if that was just a rare exception as we've struggled before to get anywhere.

But I will say after my dad's heart attack earlier this year he has gotten GP appointments within hours every time he wanted one at his doctors. I think they're very good at seeing the very unwell, but not so great with normal run of the mill issues

Online form called a 'Consulting Room'- marvellous indeed.

Haha, visions of being able to go into a virtual surgery, be great, you could choose the car you drive and park it in a virtual car park and maybe even choose what type of person you are...I think I'd ask to be a virtual cowboy and ask if they might incorporate a virtual horse I can ride into the car park. It would need a lamp post too, for tieing the horse up and for dogs to pee against.

I'd have handsome Dr's for the ladies, dirty nurses for us lads!

Virtual Consulting rooms only, ffs!

You ring my Dr, nr. 68 and then when you get to nr.2 after an hour it cuts you off...

Little tip.

But shhhhhh.

I write to my GP.

Yep.. a piece of paper, a biro and an envellope!

I politely hand the letter in at reception, the letter is marked private and confidential (which means nothing but looks good) and then I ask the receptionist her name....and make a show of writing that down, furthermore I act all flustered and enquire as to the date and then make a note.....

Oh , I forgot, I then thank them profusely ...I'm such a polite boy

If you can go to tbe surgery you can book at 7am if you can't attend the phone system opens at 8 fastest finger if there are no appointments left ring back at 1 for the afternoon slots and repeat.

Not long ago my finger was infected rang at 8 nope none left rang at 1 nope, "I need to see a Dr my finger is infected", you need to ring 111 we don't keep emergency apoointments anymore "click"

Our doctors have a phone system that cuts off if more than five people are calling during the morning rush We simply don't bother because the odds are stacked so high against us ever getting through. It is possible to call later in the day to be patronised and have a consultation by text message.
