Yes I think it's easier to work for someone else. At the end of the day you can go home and forget about work until the next day. When you have your own business is so hard to switch off.

But...how can you go back to working for someone else when you've been your own boss, I know I couldn't.

Actually, having BEEN self employed / run your own company is one of the absolute WORST things you can put on a CV for an employer... re-write it as "contracting for Acme Ltd" and not owned and operated Acme Ltd

Given the choice I'd work for myself, at least then I would only have my rules and standards to work to instead of other peoples. Which in my case drives me mad as I feel I cannot do my job because of their restrictions or refusal to change but then it is a much bigger machine than just a small company.

If you can find the right place with the right pay and you can adapt to their way of working .... excellent then go for it

You said you was in the military and you've never worked for anyone since so working for a civvy boss is a challenge in itself not to mention you've spent years doing it your way. Itd be a shame to give up on a company you've built yourself, but if its killing you to keep it going then you've got to put your own happiness first. But you don't get rich digging another mans ditch

lol...

there are however some things you just need to be an employee to learn, for example some of the stuff you learned in the services, no self employed civvy can afford the training.

Stress free?? I wish.....not only my companys board but the parent company's board breathing down our necks daily telling us how to do our jobs better than we are despite meeting each and every single target we are set.

And always with the threat of redundancy hanging over us.....

Stress free exists possibly but might suggest that comes without some of the trappings....

I'm in the same situation I'm a joiner and work for myself. And it just feels like I'm grafting my bollocks off for nothing!! Dealing with customers that think I can just wait weeks for my money. I normally have a few grand float to keep me going but that's dissapeard. I'd be better off flogging my van and tools and getting a job stacking shelves in tesco...seriously. At least you'd get holiday pay maybe a company van/car tax and ni paid for so you doing have a big bill at the end of the year. I know I've seriously lost heart with it

It's super tough working for yourself but really doubt I'd get any satisfaction from working for someone else. It does grind you down but for me being my own man is worth the hardship if that makes sense. Nothing wrong with stacking shelve in tesco but if you've worked hard to get your trade and clients then that's sonething to be applauded and proud of I think x

Having worked for others for 25 years I've decided to work for myself and in the process of setting up my own business

The motivation is to get the rewards for all my hard work and get away from office politics and bosses who take credit for my efforts

I guess it depends on the other options really. I'm self employed but before that I worked for a big company, in that job I was never able to switch off when leaving work so the fact I can't now doesn't bother me really. Yeah I work a stupid amount of hours a week and turn out taking calls and writing emails when I shouldn't be working but at least I can make myself believe its on my own terms not for someone else.

I do the odd contract where I technically work for someone else but I don't think I'd be able to go back to working for someone else full time.

Only you can decide what's best, but whenever I've been in a position like yourself I've always talked it over with as many other people I can (well those who I respect the opinion of) as they can often put a different spin on things.

Good luck with whatever you decide x

I already sort of do. I take on short term contracts with a few companies. (These are the ones that want me to work solely for them ) It means I'm a lot busier as I'll have more than one job in multiple countries running at the same time. If I took a "job" then I'd have a lot more time to myself. Not sure that made any sense lol x

Do you have staff to pick up on some of the other jobs? Clients may want you but they would also want to know that they won't be left in the lurch if anything happened to you?

My advise to you is do what earns you most and is easiest to do.

Try getting a happy medium .

I was self employed for about 7 years then decided to take employment with the company to which I'd previously been a sub-contractor.

I managed 12 months and guess what ?

I'm self employed again but sub-contracting to the same company.

I took very badly with not having the freedom to come and go as I pleased. I thought I'd get used to it but I never did, so self employed it is for me

Depends on the job and who you work for.

I have started my own business, and after a lot of investment and hard work, it is slowly starting to starting to pay off.

Independence is a key factor in the long run.

Effort and hard work usually yield rewards that you cannot expect when toiling for someone else's benefit

I guess it depends on how much you like what you do.

i'm self employed, absoloutely love what i do and all the stresses, headaches etc are all worth it because i'm passionate about what i do, so the good outweighs the bad.

But if the headaches and stress mean you don't enjoy it, maybe it is time for a change, not neccesarily the self employed bit, but the work you do??

I dont think it is easier to work for someone else as in this current economic climate most employers have adopted the 'victorian workhouse' mentality and treat their staff accordingly.I work for a Charity and theres no Charity shown to us employees!

Be proud of all you've achieved and dont give it up!

It's your own fault. Deal with it, put measures in place. 50% halfway through and the other on completion. Stick to it and if they don't like it don't deal with them. If you are good it won't hurt your business.
