"What's the best documentary you've ever seen?
Planet Earth or the old World at War series. For me. "
Those are my goto's as well. But I can just remember the forerunner to Planet Earth: The World About Us which I had to sit through and hated on a Sunday night with my parents, along with the news.
Now I will happily watch only the news and nature progs. It's a funny old world. |

Island Of Lost Souls about the making of the 1996 film version of Island Of Dr Moreau starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. The most bizarre production ever. Follow it up with Burden Of Dreams - another film doc, this time about Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo which is equally unbelievable. |

Not sure about the best, but I’ve recently enjoyed watching Chimp Empire on Netflix.
Seeing some of the close up, slow motion shots of their behaviours, facial expressions and emotion in their eyes really made me realise how sentient and not-so distant from us they are.
We’d do well to remember more often, that earth does not simply belong to human beings. |

Most things by Adam Curtis.
Bitter Lake
Hypernormalisation
The 13th, on Netflix is a good one.
Stealing Africa, on YouTube, is an unexpected slap in the face on the real cost of consumption. Follow that one up by reading Cobalt Red: How The Blood Of The Congo Powers Our Lives by Siddharth Kara. |

"Two of my favourites are,
The Last Dance
My Octopus Teacher "
I can go with that. Also World at War
Anything with Attenborough
Most Netflix crime ones
Just watched the Robbie Williams one. Used to like the guy and I get he is troubled but fuck me I thought it was poorly put together and poor. I never really liked the Beckham's as a couple but their documentary (his really) was excellent and I'm not even a massive football fan.
Ditto Drive to Survive. F1 bores the tits off me. The series is outstanding.
Basketball same - Last Dance superb. |

"“Last breath” was the one I really liked.
Was lucky enough to watch that here in a local cinema with the director and he had a Q and A sesh after. Quality."
Awesome. I’d like that but only watched on Netflix. Still captivating though. |

"I don't know about best, but The Cove is heartbreaking and one that's had huge impact on my view
I've not heard of that ... is it on a catchup service?"
It's a one off documentary film, about a Japanese cove and the dolphin hunting/slaughter that happens there. |

"Oh there was something on Netflix on mushrooms/fungi in a forest - it was spectacular - both the informative commentary and the stunning cinematography "
I love fungi, that documentary is beautifully shot! I agree.
For me though Blue Planet mainly bc of the challenges of filming in this conditions.
Plus I got to go in a helicopter with a BBC team when they were scouting out the Cape of Good Hope when I lived in South Africa. Never got to meet Attenborough though |

"I don't know what the best is but I want to give a shout-out to The Long Road to War, which is on Netflix, about what led to the First World War. It's extremely good."
There's also the 1964 BBC series The Great War .. with plenty of veteran interviews...It's the WW1 equivalent to the WW2 'World at War' |

Nick Broomfield takes some beating.
The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia and Capturing the Friedmans are 2 I watched back to back and they blew my mind.
Paradise Lost and the subsequent follow ups are outstanding but a lot to take if you watch the full series like I did. The makers of it made 1 called Brothers Keeper that is also quite shocking. |

If we are talking old School the most powerful documentary I've seen is an Eye of the Storm documentary featuring Jane Elliot and her Brown Eyes, Blue Eyes experiment she conducted in her class the day after Martin Luther King's assassination.
