Away for Christmas |
It's that time of year!
Well almost.
Horror movies. Okay for the most part the modern ones tend to be generally shit but still good popcorn fun.
Do you like the cult classics, the B movies?
So which genre is your favourite?
Demonic/Possession
Paranormal
Monster
Slasher
Zombie
Gore
Witchcraft
Clasic - Vampire/werewolf/Frankenstein
Which is your favourite horror movie? |

"Demonic/possession.
Just for tips and stuff you know."
Actually, same.
I’m not much into horror, but I do have a thing for dark stories with fucked-up Christian mythology. Demons, angels, possession, all that jazz. |

Not a film, but have you watched the series Midnight Mass? Horror series set on an island among an ultra religious fishing community. |

This started off good then was just a huge disappointment. |

Haven't found a show yet (breaking bad is the only exception) that doesn't fall apart after few episodes/second season. |

Paranormal is my favourite genre. The less is shown, the better.
Some personal favourites: Ring (Japanese version), the Blair Witch Project, Rosemary’s Baby, the Ninth Gate (some cultish tones in the last two movies named). |

Oh I'd forgotten about the ring, I loved that film. I agree it's scarier the less you actually see, when I was younger I loved jeepers creepers, right up until the end and you actually saw it. Ruined!

Midsommar!"
The Wailing is fantastic if you've not seen that. Hereditary is the same director as Midsommar and so good. There's also The Last Exorcism.
I'm trying to think of the name of one which isn't strictly horror (as in, doesn't feature supernatural etc) but does have a cult. It's a horror in my eyes. Think it's called Red or something? Off to Google, failing that ask my dorky friend. |

Red State, lovely? It’s not half bad |

It's less about the genre than the time - I like black and white horror films from the 1930s-1950s. I don't like slasher films, gore, jump scares etc - I prefer atmosphere. That said, I do like Cronenberg and Carpenter even though they can be a bit bloody. |

To be fair there are some bangers from that time |

I don't have a favourite genre , subgenre when it comes to horror films. I'm not one for torture porn but aside from that I'm rather easy.
I like comedy horror (Tucker and Dale Vs Evil being a standout. Oh and Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon). I have a soft spot for Underworld (vampire films in general like Thirst, The Hamiltons). I love paranormal like Sinister, Sci-fi like The Thing. Dog Soldiers is so good! As is Jennifer's Body.
I have a real adoration for foreign horror films; the aforementioned Thirst. The Host. El Espinoza del Diablo. Rec. Train To Busan, Goodnight Mommy, Cronos...
I'm looking forward to Talk To Me being released on Netflix soon - Le Monde has been listened to a lot recently.
And thank you sensual! Red State is what I was thinking of. |

I finally watched Renfield last week.
Meh….but Nicolas Cage was good as Dracula at least, as was Nicholas Hoult, as the titular protagonist.
Actually, talking of Hoult, have you all watched Warm Bodies with him in it?
It’s a rather unique zombie film and boasts surely the happiest, most upbeat and genuinely touching endings in the entire zombie genre |

Oh Renfield! I liked it. It was... ridiculous but very much Cage. Nicholas Hoult was confusingly attractive as Renfield. |

I quite like the vampire movies, particularly the lost boys, interview with a vampire and the underworld films.
But I like all types of horror to a point. Hostel and the hills have eyes was a bit too much for me. |

I’ve just started watching the new Interview With A Vampire series on iPlayer.
Very well made - I shall continue to watch |

Yup, in most cases - when something is suggested throughout a movie and then shown at the end - it ends up being disappointing. That’s why I’ve never really given any weight to the most common criticism towards the Blair Witch Project (“you see nothing at the end”), because showing something would have probably worked against the movie.
Others I can think of: Psycho, the Birds, It (with Tim Curry as Pennywise, traumatising!), the Shining (THAT scene with the twin girls ). |

I Love Ari Aster
There's on YouTube his short "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons" it's probably the most uncomfortable thing I've ever seen. |

I saw Tucker & Dale recently and enjoyed it. Have you seen the Ash vs Evil Dead series? Absolutely hilarious fun. |

Ah yes! I've watched it. I regretted watching it. Too uncomfortable a viewing for me. |

Given up on pretty much all movies in horror as they are so predictable and samey.
It's either extreme violence for the sake of it
Terrible plots.
Awful CGI.
Or totally nonsense paranormal stuff that follows the same tired format. |

I like slashers and gore, the cheesier the better too!
We are a Freddy, Jason and Michael household
I am a massive wimp though at times, can't even bring myself to finish Guillermo del Toro's cabinet of curiosities because I creep myself out too easily |

My favourite horror films;
Frankenstein / Bride Of Frankenstein / Son Of Frankenstein (the rest of the series have good points but the first 3 with Karloff as the creature are the best).
Island Of Lost Souls (1931 adaptation of HG Wells' Island Of Dr Moreau).
Night Of The Demon (1957)
Army Of Darkness
Gremlins 1 and 2
Invasion Of the Body Snatchers (70s version)
Pan's Labyrinth
John Carpenter's The Thing
Videodrome
Eraserhead
Probably loads of others I've forgotten. |

That was a fun one
On the same lycanthrope lines, Big Bad Wolf was another horror/comedy certainly worthy of a watch
