" RIP Illya Kuryakin"

Napoleon Solo : [calling on the intercom] Illya, we have a situation here that needs your special talents. Are you free?

Illya Kuryakin : [from intercom] No man is free who works for a living. But, I'm available.

"Just found out that Steel has just died aged 90.

"

[someone knocks on the door]

Robert Jardine : Who is it?

Steel : Robert Steven Jardine?

Robert Jardine : Yes?

Steel : You asked for help.

Robert Jardine : I did, yes!

Steel : Then unlock the door.

Robert Jardine : [unchaining the locks] That was quick. I'd only just phoned.

[Sapphire and Steel enter]

Robert Jardine : I don't know you! Only... the policeman at the Point!

Steel : The policeman at the Point isn't coming. I contacted him and told him that everything down here is under control.

Robert Jardine : But it isn't!

Steel : No. That's why we're here and not him.

[He walks off toward the kitchen]

Sapphire : [amusedly] He's a shade too serious but you'll get used to him.

Robert Jardine : But he's got no right to tell the policeman...

Sapphire : Your parents have disappeared, right?

Robert Jardine : Yes!

Sapphire : And you want them back?

Robert Jardine : Of course I want them...

Sapphire : Safely?

Robert Jardine : Yes.

Sapphire : [pleased] Well then, your policeman at the Point with his idiot notebook and his idiot questions stands no chance of getting them back for you. But we do.

There's 3 answers to this

Poetic licence, as PJ Hammond was not good at science.

Sapphire and Steel would be Aluminium and Iron, but it doesn't have that sparkle.

Wow!! … I had missed this! Very sad.

I was only watching an old programme of Six Million Dollar Man a couple of weeks ago (sad I know), and he popped up. I thought he must be old and wondered if he was still with us … and he was!

Don’t forget his leading role in Mosquito Squadron, a fab WW2 film … but rip off of 633 Sqn, the iconic film.

R xx

"Was he the last surviving member of the cast from The Great Escape "

John Leyton is still alive, he's 87. Played Flight Lieutenant Dickie, known as the Tunnel King alongside Danny Welinski played by Charles Brosnan.

"Loved him in Sapphire and Steel "

Same here, he reprised an RAF air crew role in one of the episodes: a nod and a wink if I ever saw one.

I never got to see Watcher in the woods, the Disney film from the same era

I'd forgotten he was actually in Colditz (72-74), though I'm a bit too young to remember that one. It wasn't one I remember being repeated sadly.

I've had the blue DVD boxset for around 10 years I think! Got it on a nostalgia trip but never put it on. Do they really hold up? pt

In my not-so-blue-as-sapphire's eyes, yes

It's a mixed bag, 6 assignments. Typically 6 x 30 min episode per story.

This was the thinking mans' Doctor Who. Think Tom Baker's era.

Low budget/high imagination and even the video frame rate, ie ghosting added to the effect.

1 nursery rhymes: proper spooky, creaky stairs and an old house (I remember this one)

2 WWW1: classic ghost story and a Mosquito Squadron reference (and this one too)

3 fast growing baby: didn't like this episode

4 landlord and tenants: not as good as assignment 1

5 dinner party/Cluedo: feels like a normal whodunnit.

6 the petrol station (I'll never forget the ending)

.

I remember parts of the train station one, which I'm reading was Assignment 2 (but still series 1 - there are 6 assignments over 4 series).

According the votes on IMDb, Assignments 2 and 6 (which is all of series 4) are unanimously the best stories. Their 9 best episodes score between 7.7 and 8.5, and constitute 9 of people's 10 highest-rated episodes! That's maybe a good tip for people dipping in.

I was interested to discover that he became an enthusiast for the history of forensic pathology, and gave lectures on the subject in fact and fiction.

He did dress a little like Richard Dawkins, in his recent pics.
