Ok. I come across a lot of people with them, young and old..... Folk who have them through accidents, illness, not just poor hygiene. Most are horrendously embarassed about them. Which makes me want to ask......... I know they aren't a turn on..... But..... Would they be a hard limit, enough to put you off a meet?

Well to be fair it's not like the choice is between a set of dentures and a set of perfect gnashers.

Not for nothing is the UK known as the worst place in the western world for teeth.

Dentures have put me off in the past.

My dentist has informed me due to a loss of bone density in my upper jaw I'll lose my left incisor and front teeth. Three years on I'm still waiting. One of my front teeth has moved, don't think it will remain in situ for long, then I'll need a bridge.

Don't know about teeth, but once went on a blind date with a girl with a glass eye. The date didn't go too well as we had nothing in common. I asked if we could still remain friends however, and she said she'd keep an eye out for me.

Dentures are never a replacement for your own healthy teeth. Loads of people think they are an easy answer when they havent got straight teeth, teeth are discoloured, or they have poor dental hygiene.

But several others have no choice but to have dentures due to illness or accident. Cancer is a big reason for oral condition going down the pan. (technical term)

Thex are usually horribly embarassed. I wondered if it put swingers off.

Hard one really

It would depend on so many things for me

If they lost them thro poor hygiene I think it would put me off because the chances are they would still not look after their mouth properly, infact they could see even less reason to look after their mouth now they have no teeth

If it was just a few they had lost from a fall etc I don't think it would bother me I think a full set would tho

I went to a party once when a guy bent down and his dentures fell out. He just quickly picked them up and put them back in again.

But apart from mishaps happening like that, in most cases you wouldn't know. If I lost front teeth then I'd have implants but at £1000 a tooth its costly and if I was ever in the unfortunate position to need more then I'd have to rely on bridges and crowns etc

He must of forgotten his polygrip that day

Yes implants are a costly game. Bridges can be a pain. But are great if they work. Implant retained dentures are cheaper than full implants. Theyre like a big implant retained bridge.

Its hard to know people have lost teeth with a bit of good work.

Especially the women still feel down about it though.

Wouldn't put me off. On average you spend 1 day a year just brushing your teeth. People with dentures therefore must be more time efficient. I like efficiency I think I picked that up working in Germany xxx

Tis very true. Dentists won't do complex things on the NHS because they get paid a standard unit rate per patient job and so they might as well do as little as possible .... And onto the next.

If you want a nice bridge or crown matching your own teeth, or chrome denture, most will tell you you have to pay :/

One thing I have always been positively anal about ..is my teeth. I visit the dentist twice a year, the hygienist 2 to 3 times a year.

If I lost a tooth a dental implant would be top of my priority list, ranging above holidays, cars, luxuries etc..

Teeth are the first thing people notice when you talk to them, smile at them....

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

I also go to the dentist regularly and therefore if I needed treatment its picked up quickly. I would have implants for my front teeth if required and I'd rather have those than a holiday.

I don't like going to the dentist but the thought of decay in my mouth bothers me more.

Not seen many people with dentures posting here, I wonder why? Terrified they will never get another meet perhaps.

My natural teeth have caused me pain and misery for most of my life one way or another. They were never much good and most of them had fillings by the time I reached my mid teens. That's back in the days when I would have been beaten by my parents if they weren't scrubbed twice a day. In hindsight, its probably over cleaning that resulted in their failure.

Having lost probably half of them over the years, the last straw was when my 14 stone English Mastiff accidentally kicked me in the mouth and I lost a front tooth... enough is enough!

My only regret is that I didn't get rig of them years sooner! When I first had them, almost full set top and bottom,it was like trying to eat with a pair of flip-flops, that changed in a matter of a couple of days. When I went back to the dentist for a checkup after two weeks he said...

"How are you getting on with your dentures?"

My reply...

"Dentures? Have I got dentures?"

Absolutely one of the best things I've ever done and I'm actually looking forward to getting rid of the few natural teeth that remain.

Granted, the early dentures, the likes that my parents had, with square and simple looking teeth, poor colour matching and poor fitting must have been a nightmare. These things I have now (ok they cost me £2000) are much better than the free ones I was born with and look 100% natural.

And as a BTW... four of us went out to dinner, a carvery, we all had pork. There was a bowl of pork rind/pork scratchings and we all took some but guess what? I was the only one who could actually eat it

For those who are put off people with dentures I can only suggest that you try not to be. Chances are you've shagged/snogged someone with dentures and you never knew!

The bad stories you hear most likely stem from some of the issues already mentioned, such as poor personal care/hygiene and you probably didn't want to meet them anyway!

My Mrs has been told she will loose her teeth because of diabetes compounded with early menopause which is nothing to do with personal care/hygiene. And while back on the hygiene thing... dentures come out,get scrubbed and then placed in a sterilising solution in a ultrasonic cleaner. People with dentures can have standards of oral hygiene that make the mouth of people with natural teeth seem like a cesspit by comparison

I'm chuffed that at least one person has had a good experience with dentures and a few other people arent judgemental.

It's good to hear. I would like to think that the best ones would of course look so natural and be kept so clean by the wearer that a meet wouldnt be put off, but as always its down to individual choice.

Good comments there, and yes, its still an individual thing. Strangely I always thought false teeth were revolting too! I wouldn't question prospective meets about it though. I accept people as I find them.

Probably because of a life long issue with crap teeth, teeth and dentures had always been one of the very few things that I was squeamish about. Obviously I had to overcome that issue and I did.

Anyone else out there thinking 'I'm gonna have to get mine sorted but *insert excuses*' do yourself a favour and get to it, the longer you leave it the more you'll kick yourself for putting it off or trying to pluck up the courage... you might have to do it sooner or later, so nothing to be gained putting it off. Don't be a fool to yourself like I was for so many years!

If people are ashamed of dentures its probably because of how so many people make assumptions about why they have them. That and some of the horror stories that go with them, such as the getting pissed and puking teeth down the toilet! Personally I would think the thing to be ashamed of there is the getting pissed to the point of puking, the teeth being an incidental consequence.

Still very few people posting here admitting they have dentures when 10 people in every hundred have them!

In the end, you'll all have a good laugh and exchange denture mishap stories. What you won't often hear is something like... I'm so glad I lost my legs in the car crash, these false ones don't have smelly ugly feet attached

Anyone ashamed of joint implant because the ones they were born with didn't last?

Fact is false teeth/dentures are a taboo, but that is only because society makes it that way. And thinking about it, what does it say about this society of ours, everyone seems to think its fair game to take the piss out of people with dentures but a person would be considered some kind of shallow bigoted monster to take the piss out of other types of false body parts!

I totally get what you are saying, really I do.

I do think there is a difference though, aside for the topic being a bit of a taboo. The taboo stems from as you rightly say associations of people having poor oral hygiene. That cannot be said to be the case for people with artificial limbs and chances are that some, not all people with denture do have those as a result of poor oral hygiene, no mistake about it.

I agree with you that it should not make a difference when meeting people - as long as they have clean teeth and fresh breath.
