General Anesthesia.

Whelp, after being 2 years on a waiting list I am going undeeeeer!
Day case, simple procedure, should be back home in the evening. But I am terrified.
Only time I have been under GA was when I was 6, having my tonsils taken out. Wasn’t fun, I still remember, but I recovered fully.
Only other times I’ve been in a hospital has been to give birth to my 3 kids, no complications or anesthesia and was out within 24 hrs.
So I am not sure why I am posting really. Don’t want any bad stories haha. Maybe a bit of handholding? Bit of support? Soothing noises/massage? 
Support network is minimal at the moment and I haven’t many people to talk about this irrational fear… I fear that I will have a meltdown tomorrow or faint or something and it will delay my procedure which is not elective- it has to be done!

Fear of going under anaesthetic is quite common.
We are effectively voluntarily handing over our very being completely to the surgeons mercy so to speak.
However, statistically speaking, being anaesthetised is very safe under most circumstances (which your doctors will carefully gauge).

You'll be fine. It's been a while for me since I had general but from what I remember they gave me a valium before I was knocked out. So I was pretty relaxed beforehand. I remember the anaesthetist telling me that I was going to count backwards but I don't remember counting. Relax, you'll be back up in no time. |

My mate said it is fine. You do not even feel yourself closing eyes. It's like a light switch going off and then on straight away. You won't dream just suddenly (what it feels like anyway) wake as though time stood still. |

Good luck, hope it goes well. Had a number of operations with general anaesthetic in the past - they were fine and you'll be grand.
Hope you are in and out, finished and satisfied as speedily as the average guy on Fab following a first sexual encounter after a dry spell  |

I've felt exactly what you are feeling now OP. It's not an erratic fear, simply a normal human reaction to the unknown. Before you know it, you will waking up. As someone else said, it really is like time stands still. When I woke up it felt like I'd only been asleep for 5mins. The loveliest moment was the recovery nurse holding my hand as I came round and me stroking her wrist, drowsily saying "I love your tattoo" over and over

Same, got my surgery in a few weeks and anxious about it too. I've been told it's just like going to sleep and don't forget these doctors do this on the daily. I'm sure it will be fine.. Good luck op! |

Hope it all goes well. It is a tough thing when youre on your own as a lot of us are. Explain to them how anxious you are. Im sure it won't be the first time theyve heard it. |

I used to react really badly to GA which then prompted a massive fear however I’m loads better now and have discovered that over the past 50 years things have changed massively and I no longer feel so bad after.
Take big deep breaths when you come round to clear your lungs and if you need help with pain or nausea ask for it! Don’t be shy.
As soon as you arrive tell them you want a good pre med and the special cream on your hand x

I’m confident all will go well and according to plan OP and you’ll be home relaxing with a cuppa before you know it
My thoughts will be with you as I understand most situations involving hospitals can be frightening and stressful but I do hope to see a nice recovery post from you  |

I have a huge hospital phobia and do everything alone so I can totally understand your fears.
They are very skilled, be honest in how you feel and they will all do their best to make you comfortable.
You'll be back home in no time and full of relief that it's over.

I’ve had a a few general over the years, you have a pre med, nice person chats with while you’re laying down, all of a sudden you wake up somewhere else.

My big fear…… the dentist…… went for a check up this for the first time in 12 years ……. Went through a brutal trauma at hands of a dentist when I was 15….. went back at 25, and promptly fainted at the door…… found a great dentist after that, but stopped going when he left so was terrified about this last visit.
The dentist was so good after I explained my issues and my teeth are still in good shape…,, have even booked a check up in 6 months.
Am sure you will be fine too OP |

I looovvvve going under. I love my sleep, getting so little lately. I'm due a small op too. I can't wait! Then being waited on hand and foot in the recovery room. Sheer bliss in my eyes. As a mum it's nice to get 'me time'. Although exstream, but no school runs, dinners to make ect ect.
Your be fine, they do 100's a day. |

You'll be fine OP I've been under general anaesthetic twice recently and have got another day surgery operation week after next so I'll be doing it all again. It is worrying before you go in but the staff are fantastic they talk you all through it, you go in and they put you under, next thing you know you're waking up its all done. |

Staff were all great… I told everyone who’d listen about my fears but was always put at ease and they were great in the anesthesia room, they got me blabbering about peenguins in South Africa and that is all I remember. Then I was blabbering about half marathons in the recovery room.
I was given the world’s biggest, hottest, most-perfectly-prepared cuppa, gorgeous sandwich and Bourbon biscuits and now back home. Thank you!  |

You’ve nothing to be worried about.
I’m a nurse and had to have GA for the first time about 10 years ago. I had administered anaesthesia daily in my job, yet was terrified of going under for a procedure.
Well on the day, I was thinking there’s no way they could put me out! I could feel the propofol running through my veins, up my arm…it was such a lovely warm, cosy feeling. I felt a little bit tipsy, like I had had a drink, and next thing I remember, I was in recovery!
Sounds weird but I’d love to go under GA again just for that warm fuzzy feeling!! |
