"Gary Oldman
I like him. But think he plays similar roles just in different accents
I'm not sure you can say Churchill and Smiley are similar roles. And Sirius Black is different too."
I haven’t seen two of these roles in fairness |

Churchill
Sid Vicious
Dracula
Sirius Black
Drexl Spivey

Not exactly similar and that's just a tiny subset of his work! |

Edward Norton
Anthony Hopkins (mrs)
Jake Gyllenhaal
Morgan Freema (mr)
There's definitely a long list though!
I'm not completely sure what you mean exactly by dynamic but I think they're diverse. |

"I don’t really know what you mean by ‘dynamic’ here. I see a lot of great actors mentioned though.
"
I mean it as in changing, taking on a broad range of roles (and nailing them) and not being so one dimensional etc. I may have used the wrong word in dynamic but also think it works. I’ve heard it used in similar contexts |

I don’t rate Oldman. And that’s just purely based on what I’ve seen him in. But he’s definitely done way more than I realised. And he is decent with the accents. |

But Denzel still stays within his comfort zone. A lot of his roles are very similar characters in terms of personality and tone (not all but most). They are all very grounded characters, some could even be picked up and dropped in to a different movie of his and it would still work.
You compare that to Gary Oldman whom has done far more above and beyond type roles, Denzel doesn't come close to that kind of range.
Even his commissioner Gordon was fine, it's not exactly a huge part. He was the best Gordon to date, but again that's not saying much since the others lacked anyway.
Even Johnny Depp has a better character range than Denzel.
Denzel is by far the better actor across the board compared to Depp, but he could not compete on any of the larger than life characters that Oldman and Depp have done.
Which is why Oldman takes the title. Amazing actor on par with Denzel but he has the range of characters which Denzel does not - or at least has not shown us to the same extent.
Comedy, serious, quirky, eccentric. |

I'll slightly retract about his roles being pick up and drop in that the 4 main Denzel genres are varied and certain characters of his won't fit other genres, what I originally said does his ability a diserrvive, but still his characters are all grounded, mostly very serious and focused. Not one dimensional but certainly have very clear similar traits.
All of which he does play to perfection. |

I disagree with your assessment of Denzel’s roles but I think I have him over Oldman because he’s a better actor imo. I don’t like many of the films I’ve seen Oldman in. BUT I must also confess I think my feelings on Oldman and Depp could be driven by bias and even subcxnsciously impacted by my thoughts on them beyond acting. Because you make some valid points on them.
By the way I’m not meaning to disagree with their place in this thread . I just don’t rate them |

I have seen and loved Denzel in some different things but I do think roles like Malcolm X, Training Day, Flight, American Gangster, Remember the titans (which was the first film I ever saw him in), Glory etc are not as similar as sugggested here. Certainly not roles you can drop into any Denzel film imo. There’s a range there. |

Gary Oldman - his performance as Norman Stansfield in Leon is often touted as the best movie villain ever by many fans and critics alike and... c'mon... NOBODY at first sussed it was him playing Mason Verger in Hannibal! |

Oh, oh, oh!
And Brad Pitt as Mickey O’Neil has to put him on the list too… I know it is only one role. But what a role!
If someone said Brad Pitt was going to play it and do the job he did of it before I saw it ( if that makes sense?) I would, no way have believed them! |

I’m not seeing Doug McClure, Larry Hagman or Chuck Norris here?
I think some people need to broaden their viewing habits and take on board the plethora of talent there really is in the acting world |

Amen! It was absolutely criminal how our Chuck has never received an Oscar nomination in his long and illustrious career.
His performance in the classic, Code Of Silence was simply sublime, not least of all the scene wherein he is hit across the head with a snooker ball. Chuck feigns the sensation of being dazed brilliantly - a phenomenon that Norris has and never will feel in reality of course as he is God and thus impervious to all harm…

He can show a subtle change in mood just with his eyes. It is true genius. His flexibility and depth just astounds me
And obviously he can just kick the shit out of everybody |

"Compare The Wedding Singer and Little Nicky to Uncut Gems and Reign Over Me. Adam Sandler has got some range.
That said, it’s Gary Oldman"
Oh dear. Adam Sandler. Some really poor films. But to be fair he was very good in Uncut Gems. |

I think there's a certain part in being dynamic that could be a not so well known name that plays a character, not top billed, but you'll never forget their contribution
David morse, Barry pepper, Patricia Clarkson, Jason Isaacs, Richard Jenkins, Ed Harris, John c mcguinley

Christian Bale as a film actor, his range and abilities are great
Christopher Eccleston is a marvellous all rounder he is intense, seems to be leaps ahead in my opinion |

Quite a few to pick from.
I think overall I would have to go for Robert De Niro.
Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Deer Hunter list just goes on really. He's a monster like it's an obsession to him.
I think Paul Newman in the Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and Colour of Money put in some damn fine performances though. |
