Pet feelings - Rainbow Bridge

Lancashire

Our 9 year old dog was yesterday diagnosed with severe internal liver, spleen and kidney cancer and was given a prognosis of 2 to 4 weeks lifespan at best. What a total bummer.

We are totally devastated but decided that we must end his misery sooner rather than later for his benefit even though we want him around as long as possible obviously. Keeping him alive would only be for us and not in his best interest, as his quality of life has dropped off a cliff in 4 days. He looks at us as if to say 'take the pain away'.

Sometimes I think that we should have equal respect for human life as our animals and I am sure we are doing the right thing, however unpleasant.

It is with a heavy heart that we will assist him over the rainbow bridge tomorrow but we owe him everything for the amount of unconditional love and hapiness he has given to us since we had him as a 10 week old puppy.

RIP our fur baby.

So sorry to read this.

The only faults our pets have is that they don't live long enough.

Hug him tight, I'm sure he knows he's loved.

All the best

Sorry to hear that

I'm sure some animals have bigger hearts than humans but, you're doing the right thing... hold on to the last ten years and all the best bits.

Deepest sympathies

All the feels for this.

Had to do it last year with my old doggo. She was my constant companion for 15 years, but the price we pay for all that unconditional love is that they just don't live as long as we do.

Sending hugs xx

Away for Christmas

I feel this pain greatly.

The hardest thing to do is make that decision. In the majority of the cases it's the most selfless thing you can do. Helping your friend and family member while having to continue with the pain of it yourself.

I agree about humans. It's a funny thing, we put human lives above animals in almost every aspect.

So much in fact that we force people to suffer intentionally.

Sorry to read this, OP. Always such a horrible decision.

As others have said, you've given him a great life and he'll have known he was loved, which is pretty much all a dog needs! You've done what's best for him right to the very end.

Hugs.

It's never easy. I know I'll be facing the same in the next few years, we've spent thousands over the last few years keeping another animal alive (ensuring there's no pain of course) and while the decision is never an easy one, it's a responsibility we can't ever shun.

You're showing love and doing the right thing so never feel guilty.

I just wish we were able to make the same choice for ourselves.

So sad and realy sorry but the right thing to do. Those of us that have gone through this know how difficult it is. Thinking of you and as you said remember all the love you gave and got back for all these years

I know it's not the point of the thread (sorry, OP), but my god, YES, to that last sentence. It's bizarre.

One thing I'd say.

Make sure you give him some chocolate before.

No dog should ever go over the bridge without ever tasting it.

Good luck and hope it goes smoothly for you both.

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

It's the only choice, OP. And I'm so sorry you've had to make it.

You taking his pain away is the last act of love you can show him, but won't be the last love you feel for him. That'll never leave you.

Hold him and look after him

If you were God, and make something as brilliant as a dog, sooner or later you’d want it back

?

So sorry to hear this OP, it's heartbreaking and it never gets any easier. It will never get anywhere close to repaying all of the unconditional love and loyalty that I've received from my dogs over the years, but I see it as the last kindness that I can show them, to willingly accept the emotional pain to end their physical pain when the time comes.

And I agree with the chocolate...all mine have feasted on all the chocolate they want on that final trip to the vets.

Reading

We have lost both of our senior cats in the last two years. They were good ages 16 and 18. We took both to the vets when it was obvious it was the end. I refuse to make animals suffer when they can have a quick painless death. I was with both of them at the end as I felt they deserved that. I picture then both young again and playing together.

I agree we should give the same dignity in death to humans.
