I have just come across a tablet of wright's coal tar soap in my late Mother's wardrobe and I started reminiscing...Remembering Cussons imperial leather, Camay and Knights castile.
Which ones do you remember? |

"I still use coal tar soap"
It quite literally is made from tar from burning coal(badly so it forms tar) producing Cresylic acid(Cresol). It has disinfectant properties.Heavily diluted coal tar soap was used as a mouthwash/throat gargle. Its smell is a deterrent to insects and rats/mice.Liquid Cresol was shipped in large quantities to the Gallipoli campaign in drums marked "C" and was used to spray the piles of corpses of horses and men |
