Would you change your name?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Inspired by Brucey’s names thread.
Have you ever thought about changing your name? There are two ways of spelling my given name and surname and, inevitably, everyone picks the wrong one for me unless I tell them. So I’ve been spelling my name in every phone call I’ve ever made and it’s frickin irritating. I’d like to change mine to something better, would you consider changing yours by deed poll?
Disclaimer: By answering this post, you are not unwittingly volunteering to have your name changed and it is not a competition. I’m just curious |

I probably wouldn’t change my name no. My first name is unique ish and there’s a few different ways of spelling it. I have an Italian surname and I find it quite funny whenever I’m at the doctors or something and they try calling out my name |

I would, and was seriously considering doing it, still do to be honest.
I have a weirdly sounding and impossible to pronounce correctly foreign name which I hate since I was a child.
But then I believe it’s a part of my heritage and my identity so I’m really trying to get to like it, unsuccessfully so far. |

People usually say my name wrong or assume it’s pronounced like a more common variation. But I wouldn’t change it. My family love it. And I’ve grown to love it too. |

I was named after my dad's mum. She passed away just before my parents got married so I never got to meet her. So I'd never change my first name.
I did consider changing my surname and going back to my maiden name but I decided I wanted to be the same as my sons. |

"I did change my name by deed poll. It's easy. "
Its easy to do the name change, but a pain in the arse to get the updates done with everyone who needs to know. 12 years later I still sometimes get letters in my old name |

Yeah that's a pain. I still get letters for the people who lived at my house 20 years ago! |

oh sorry our real name. yes I changed mine by seed poll back to my maiden name. I also changed my name from.the Greek spelling zkathArine(thanks dad) to the more common Katherine. People still misspell it though. |

I'm changing my surname to make a statement.
Part of disowning the shitty place I came from. To make a statement that I've had to do life alone anyway so why would I carry their name. After all they've said and done to me I want nothing of any connection or link to them whatsoever. Part of breaking the cycle, branching off and have that hell die off. |

I have always had problems with my names: double letters where people don’t expect them and the same letter occurring three times at the junction of fore name and surname. People have always got my email address wrong (I did find a fix eventually). Like OP I’m always spelling my name out on the phone.
But no, it never occurred to me to change it: it’s what I was given. |

It seems most people are happy with theirs! And that’s exactly what I would expect - good on you for owning it if it’s a difficult one.
I suppose my next problem after deciding to change it would be - to what?! For those who’ve done it or would consider it, have you ever settled on a name and then realised you know a complete prick by the same name? Totally spoils it! Or is that just me haha |

I'm ok with mine, I used to be envious of my siblings as they had more traditional names that had a meaning whereas mine is like an Anglo/Indian mash-up that didn't have one. But I quite like it now |

I like my first name, my surname though is a common one only problem is its the Scottish spelling so everytime I have to give my surname I have to spell it otherwise people just assume its the more common English spelling. |

Not ever thought about changing my name but picking up on a thread from earlier this week, I’d love to have more letters in my name so as to make a decent signature!! I’ve only a total of 7 letters in both names alas! x |

I've changed my surname twice.
I go by two names in real life, one name that people who know me well call me and my given name.
I automatically spell our surname every time I tell someone it because it's very difficult and has a lot of consonants. It's unusual for people to get it right even then.
I'd never consider changing my given name. |

Surname yes, I hate it. First name probably not now. I always thought it was a bit boring, but now when I hear someone use it or write it down Im like Ooh thats me, and its not bad. Im not used to hearing anyone use my name so it seems a novelty. |

Signatures are a problem of their own. I’ve never mastered one. I’ve practiced but can never get one that looks half decent. Now I just use my initials. |

I know people who have changed their forename, someone twice. And I just think “what’s the point? |

I have never managed to get a signature either. I just write my name. So boring |

Perhaps because, believe it or not, they want to. Because they feel some sort of need to and it will enhance their life somehow.
But thanks for playing. |

I've thought a few times to formally change my first name name. I know what is change it to as well. I also considered changing my surname to match my kids surname (minus the marrying bit) years ago, but glad that I didn't now. |

I haven’t really considered it, but I would like to be able to walk into a telephone box as me, spin round three times and emerge as “Malty Horlicks”
A kind of Sherlock Holmes, James Bond and Rumpole of The Bailey all rolled into one … with a side line of being a Kate Bush and Audrey Hepburn hybrid at the weekends and in the evenings |

I changed mine emotionally when I joined here. Deed poll is the next step, which I will do, I'm just biding my time.
Everyone says I suit my chosen name more than my birth name, which pleases me too as it feels right.
It's only business contacts now that know me as anything else, so my birth name has become my professional name - for now at least.

I've never wanted to change my name. It's ok. It can be spelt in various ways, but I've always considered mine the correct spelling
It was pretty popular about 30 years before I was born, so people can be surprised at my youth. I changed surname when I got married, but it's only a couple of letters different to my maiden name so I barely changed my signature. I'm content with my name |

A friend of mine who did it needed a new start in life. Not for safety reasons or anything of the sort. She left a difficult long relationship. She explored her sexuality in a completely different way. She changed her life around when it came to career/location/leisure . The old name just didn't fit her anymore as she says. Good for her. in my heart she is still the old one because I addressed her that during some very bonding moments as she was my doula but I would not call her that anymore and I'm glad she chose to mark this new her by renaming herself. Like a signature in the corner of a painting you just completed. In a way.

My hubby and I took each other's surnames when we got married, and while my name is pretty obscure anyway, hyphenating it and bolting hubby's name on after gives us an surname of which we are the only two in the world to possess.
Just coming up to ten years later, and it's still the case that when you conduct business (either on the phone or in person) they never forget who you are, as the name is so unusual. |

"….. would you consider changing yours by deed poll?"
Been there, done that, got the deed poll.
It’s an interesting side facet of trans life, what do you change your name to? Few people in life actually make that decision for themselves and it’s a massive responsibility. I personally had plenty of alter egos before I went full time and there were all as much a lie as the male life I was living. In the end I went for the “boring” feminisation of my previous name, it seemed like a good middle ground between all my previous egos and amalgamated them into one cohesive person.
Anyway enough of my boring story, love to hear what others would go for if they could |

One of my friends actually changed his from Carl to Romulus "
Seriously?! Crikey, that’s quite a departure! Does he get stick for it? Imagine he gets it misspelled quite a bit, too. |

That’s an interesting line that I hadn’t considered. Are you pleased with what you plumped for? I have no idea what I’d pick if I was to change my name (and it would be the same gender). I’ve grown quite attached to Felix from my fab name. |

There certainly are times when I wished I’d just used one my previous identities ( Julia and Jessica were two of my favourites ) but all in all I’m happy with what I choose and it stays true to the name my parents gave me as well which meant a lot to me. |

I changed mine by deed poll. After my divorce I felt sad I wouldn't share my kids surname. So I took my daughters middle name and made that my new middle name, took my sons middle name and made it my new last name.

Yep, I didn't hate my original name particularly. Kept the new one though. It's actually pretty sensible all things considered..... |
