I've been a musician for 37 years, I've been in some seriously bad bands... and seen even worse. BUT every one was better than not being a band at all. All music is good. |

"Coldplay = Musical beige
They have to be a contender...
"
-I know what you mean of course, but they have written some good stuff too imo. I used to feel that same about U2 at one point as I found them so pretentious, these days I tend to concede (like the musician here) that most bands have done some good stuff at some point. And to their fans of course they are the business..
I actually think M People are great for example! pt |

Can’t decide between the shoddy rock cliche of Queen, who mainly seem to be popular due to the on stage prancing of the long dead show pony, or Oasis- a band that pretty much just ripped off several acts musically as well as their persona…although two previous good shouts with MPeople (You can see where Vic Reeves got his pub singer impression from ) and Lighthouse Family, the musical equivalent of Prozac |

There is so much snobbery around music. As soon as anyone achieves success and is lifted out of obscurity (and discovered by the great unwashed) the snobs dismiss them. It is all totally subjective (apart from anything that used to be produced by Stock Aitkin Waterman, that really was shite ) |

My bandmates and I think we're not that good, but, we don't care. We make music, we have fun making music, and people who have seen us at gigs tell us that we are actually quite good. As you say, all music is good, and it's better than not being in a band. |

Wings and Hanson both have to rank in there.
Any manufactured boy/girl "band" is automatically not worthy of being called a band. None actually play instruments or write music. They are purely the pretty ones who auditioned to front the machine behind the curtain and needed the least auto tune |

Worst gig was the enid... That was years ago... A few weeks ago saw a band called when rivers meet and that was the second worst of all time... I admire most musicians who have the balls to stand up and play... But... |

This thread is proving quite a good playlist for me!
M People, Fleetwood Mac, Housemartins, Beatles, Pulp, Sex Pistols, Nirvana (music's daftest hype-based backlash imo put a lot of Brits off those, and then the 'pretty boy' stupidly died - we were Jealous-UK before Britpop imo).
I even like some Radiohead, U2, Coldplay and Wings! And the first by Dire Straights was 'ok' I thought. He wasn't great on women which really limited his output, and he's actually admitted that he sang most of the Brothers in Arms album (the success of which embarrasses him) like a jerk. Music is nothing if not subjective. pt |

Re Chris Martin and Coldplay - I get the 'vanilla' sound issues etc (I like harder myself but I care a bit less if I like a song) - but what I can't pick up on what he is supposed to have done? I'm not great with tabloid shit, but really what has Coldplay (or is it Martin?) always had so much hate? Most of their stuff just sums up the word 'average' to me. Occasionally down to mediocre and maybe even insipid sometimes perhaps (I'm not at expert), but sometimes clearly well-written too. When I hear their songs I either thing meh or well that's not so bad! One or two I do like.
In principal their sound is just typical British 'prog-pop' in a fairly minimalist setting. Not my first bag by any means, but it's been a standard format in the UK since The Who (and no I'm not calling them The Who!). And yes they come over as pretty middle class. But still why so much grief? I can think of so much genuinely worse music out there myself! pt |

-Worse than Coldplay? From above I'd say Dire Straights, Five Star and Wet Wet Wet for sure. Maybe Queen at their worst, though they could raise their game for sure. It's hard to dislike Queen.
The last time I listened to a UK new-music radio show (I admit I'm not current with this stuff) most of it really underwhelmed me to be honest. I like female voices, but I when I listen past the popular song I'm often disappointed. And sometimes I don't even like the popular song. I hear loads of 'bland' all the time. At least Coldplay had (or have if they are still going) their own sound.
Just realised someone said Tina Turner in this thread! - I'm adding her to my current playlist too. Love her.

I would agree, based on the Fleetwood Mac of the mid seventies onward.
However I would have to take issue with regards to original Fleetwood Mac created by Peter Green, a fantastic blues rock band , with Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan making up the five piece |

-Christine Perfect went on to become Christine McVie and just got better and better at writing songs til about 1985 imo. I like all the Macs up the mid 80's. And their awesome rhythm section (ie their name) remained the same throughout all their many iterations. Rumours may get a bit over-played, but it will never sound like a bad album ever. As long as songs can be good and bad it just isn't. Tusk and Mirage and good cult albums too - loads of freaky Lindsay Buckingham stuff on them. pt

As already said, totally subjective.
Personally I will always give more of a pass to any band that writes their own songs and plays their own instruments and can actually perform well live and not just in the studio. So Coldplay are FAR from the worst IMO. Plenty far far worse. You may not LIKE their sound but at least it is THEIR sound and they created it. Gotta love how success breeds contempt as well. |

Actual “band” (ie write own songs, play instruments) I subjectively do not like is the Manic Street Preachers. Awful.
Not real “bands” - any Boy Band such as Take That, One Direction, Backstreet Boys.
Solo Artists - I really cannot stand all those “warbling women” who go up and down the scales, the worst being Mariah Carey.
Over rated IMHO is Ed Sheeran. |

I'd concede the Manic's were bit too to be honest, although 'Know Your Enemies' (sort of the album after their really-big albums) - is a genuinely really-good punk album. Proper punky, with their own 'take' refined to its best. And it has Ocean Spray, about his mum. --pt |

Manics are an odd one for me. Rarely listen to their music but really like them.
Went to their first tour in about 89, then a few times after, missed the whole stadium level tours and last saw them about 4-5 years ago. Definitely one of the best live bands around |

My list of worst bands that are unfathomably popular:
Coldplay
Keane
Foo Fighters
Franz Ferdinand

Maroon 5
Lewis Capaldi
Ed Sheeran
I probably have more, but these are off the top of my head. All of them make music for people who don't like music. |

That’s harsh. Quite like Coldplay and not remotely ashamed to admit it. I think the “cool kids” just think it is game to not like things that are popular. It is just musical snobbery. |

It is just musical snobbery."
Nothing cool about knowing Coldplay are boring as fuck. |

All the bands being mentioned probably made thousands of people happy with their music going by how many paid to buy their music or watch them live. Some even millions.
What have the people on here criticising them done musically. Probably emptied a pub on karaoke night and got hired by the landlord to sing at closing time every night. |
