The genus they belong to is Vombatus ursinus (so I’ve just read). I’m guessing it’s a variation of the name "
The name "wombat" comes from the now-nearly extinct Dharug language spoken by the aboriginal Dharug people, who originally inhabited the Sydney area.

Another Random Wombat Fact: Their main form of defence against predators is actually their arse(!!!) I shit thee not!
When a predator is near, Wombats will typically dive down their burrows and block off the entrance with their bum!
They have also been known to crush predator’s skulls with their mighty arses. Awesome! |

Yet Another Utterly Fascinating Wombat Fact: Wombats are unique amongst their marsupial relatives in that the opening of the mothers pouch faces her rear rather than her head. This is an evolutionary trait to prevent it filling with dirt when the mother is digging….and holy shit can they dig! |
