"Any advice about good and bad areas to live in Great Manchester?"
It's a big place! Maybe you could narrow it down to the borough of GM you're interested in, e.g. Bolton, Wigan, Manchester etc. Within each borough town, there's good and less good, so we'd be here all day if talking about the entire GM area! |

Prestwich is a known Jewish area and heading up towards Bury it’s generally considered a decent area.
Didsbury & Chorlton-Cum-Hardy where Cold Feet the TV Series was filmed and that has a good reputation. I had a friend who lived in Timperley and he never had any issues in that area either.
Obviously you have Salford Quays or City Centre in both cases rents or buying are very high.
Avoid
Wythenshaw, Eccles, Failsworth, Droylsden, Denton, Sale and obviously Moss Side, if it looks rough it probably is.
Admittedly I haven’t lived in Manchester for over a decade but when I did these places were known as being risky. |

Yes, more details needed.
I live in south Manchester in a very good area - obviously don't want to be too specific. House prices do reflect that, though. |

I'd largely agree with this, although I think Sale has a better reputation than that these days.
Also consider parts of Stockport - although part of Cheshire, it's got some lovely areas and is easily commutable to Manchester. |

I used to live in Romley. Immediate access to miles upon miles of beautiful countryside and canals.
One day I hope to return there for a visit and to relive those wonderful memories of all the miles I walked |

Define what you are calling ‘good’ and ’bad’ ?
That would be a good start.
What you see as bad, may not be the same as me.
I love being in an area where criminality is high. It makes me feel alive to know that I may die from gang violence |

Burnleyish (She/They) |
Wythenshaw and Sale have definitely had some gentrification over the last few years.
In general south Manchester is 'nicer' and therefore more expensive... But there are some nicer areas north of the city too.
Blackley isn't bad at all |

You probably need to define what you mean by Manchester as Greater Manchester includes: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Salford and Manchester.
If you want to narrow it down to the city of Manchester itself (which is still a large area), then Withington and Didsbury in the southern suburbs are nice - easy access straight into town. Going further in from the south you pass student areas such as Fallowfield, then into Indian curry territory with Rusholme before getting in to the University complex on Oxford Road.
Outside of Manchester others have mentioned areas such as Altrincham (to the north of the airport) and then even further south you get the 'golden triangle' (or footballers wives area) made up of Alderley Edge, Prestbury and Wilmslow (but I would not count any of those as Manchester). |

Postcode is a huge decider in property values
Nearer The Pennines, Uppermill, Greenfield, Delph are all top whack prices, move a couple of miles away to Stalybridge, Mossley, Lees, they drop a level, another couple of miles to Ashton & Oldham and they drop again and the area becomes more urban
South of the city, places like Altrincham and Sale are pricey, but Hale, Wilmslow, Bramhall etc are very pricey for the area
They live a lot off image as opposed to anything else
Altrincham has good connections to the city, a few nice bars and market, but the shopping area is the same as most other suburbs - boarded up shops, charity shops and coffee shops
Prices are creeping up across the city area
I live at the Yorkshire side and the house prices this side of the hill are, comparatively, much higher in comparison to places like Marsden and Slaithwaite on the other side |

From the reference of where they are now id say oldham/ rochdale but beaware of the snow in these parts.
Bolton and wigan is roughly the same but it depends on where they are going.
Yes they might be flat and if im honest here I hate the flat red brick areas.
Sorry im yorkshire area which is stone and hilly with nice views.
Even I missed the views when in the land of the red rose I was also the same with the seaside view as well.
Just remember we might have 3 lanes yorkshire side of it but the other side of it only has 2.
Both are a nightmare in rush hour traffic and the inner roads are worse as ive travelled them for many years. |

It ain't flat in GM, Bolton, Wigan etc! The West Pennine Moors can be sighted from our house and the only way to exit this conurbation is to scale one of three pretty decent inclines. We have hills too |

I’m originally from north Manchester, if you could narrow down where about in greater Manchester you’re looking I’d be able to advise, but it’s a huge place haha!

Wigan isn't the only part of GM, dear fellow, and to get to Wigan from the Yorkshire end of the world means you bypass the vast majority of the surrounding towns so you wouldn't see! Are you suggesting that the West Pennine Moors that I can see from my house are at sea level?!?! |

On a clear day from the pike you can make out Blackpool tower by eye, the Pepsi rollercoaster with binoculars and even parts of Cumbria."
Is it still the Pepsi Max at Blackpool pleasure Beach. |

"Which is the pôshest/upmârket part of Manchester, out of interest?
Alderley Edge
That's Cheshire
Parts of Altrincham are probably pretty posh whilst remaining in GM."
I know, thought that as soon as I posted it.
Technically Alty is Cheshire too. |

There is no good or bad area's just area's so you shouldn't take other people's judgemental view's because mancs and I am originally from Manchester walk there own path and don't have the dyeing desire to follow the crowd so stop asking stupid questions and just go and do your own thing it's not a test so make the most of it it's the only life you have got my suggestion is do your own thinking and stop being needy
THIS IS THE ONE |

It's still nowhere near London pricing for houses though
I recently looked at a renovated 3 storey terraced townhouse with a pretty big rear garden in AE, which was on the market for just over 600k
Tell me what you'd get for that in London |

It's expensive by any wages - at least 'working' peoples wages
I don't think there is that much of a disparity in north / south wages now is there? (certainly not on line with the property price difference)
I'm sure I read earlier this week that there has been a good % outflow of both renters and homeowners from London over the last 2 years
The shift partly due to space and property pricing |

In many lines of work, there's "London weighting" added to salaries.
According to an online stats website:
"The median annual earnings in the United Kingdom was 33,000 British pounds per year in 2022. Annual earnings varied significantly by region, ranging from 41,866 pounds in London to 29,521 pounds in the North East."
The NW median was £30,716, so over £10k a year less than the London median. |

Still, £41k doesn't get you much of a mortgage these days
Quite scary really |

I find it scarier that the difference between London and the NE in terms of median salary is £12,345*!
*and not because it's sequential numbers |
