Lots of beautiful women have been mentioned. I'd add a rather obscure one.
About 10 years ago, I subscribed to Vogue - before I gave up entirely trying to understand fashion. The models on the front were always striking, of course, but not usually classically beautiful - top models rarely are. It's all about the 'interesting flaws'.
But the thud came from the doormat, and I went to pick it up. I still remember saying, out loud in an empty house, 'Ohhhhhhhh. My God.' The front cover featured what I still think was the most perfectly beautiful woman I have ever seen. It was the only time I ever bothered trawling through the 100+ pages of Bottega Veneta/Balençiaga/Ferragamo glossy ads to check the name of the cover model.
Lily Donaldson.
I haven't followed her career. I didn't even keep the magazine. And if I saw it again it would almost certainly not have that same epiphanal, transformative effect on me as it did then.
But if Aphrodite ever returned to this fallen, spotted, absurd and compromised world, she inhabited Lily Donaldson on the day of that shoot. The kind of beauty that out-illumines poetic hyperbole. The kind of face that, if dear old Chris Marlowe told you she had launched a thousand ships, or Dante mentioned her guiding him through the circles of Heaven, you'd simply nod and say "Ah, yes. Figures."
The very personification of Beauty. It was a holy encounter. Angelic choirs and silver trumpets. |
