What did you learn at school?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I learnt what they wanted me to learn and with their slant on it.
What they didn't teach was how to learn. Or develop an enquiring mind.
I was duly processed and spat out into the university system where that continued.
I would say tht I learnt "X" but I have subsequently discovered that most of what I knew to be true...isn't.

100% attendance at chemistry was it? |

'Education is what is left when everything you learned in school has disappeared.'
I learned almost nothing in school, a lot in Sixth Form College, and a huge amount at university. It's no coincidence I learned more as I was allowed to be more independent. |

I learned that they should be more careful recruiting the teachers who wear skirts or tight jeans .
I couldn’t concentrate much
Either in history or geography .
To much science and biology running in the head |

"The power of the written word.
A good foundation in source analysis.
How to ask good questions.
And that most people are nothing at all like me - and I'm very glad I'm not like them."
All that plus how to properly read and analyse hard texts like Shakespeare, my English lit teacher was amazing. Also learned to program BASIC which put me in good stead for a career as a software engineer in my 30s. I wish I put more effort into the other subjects tbh, but I was young and too interested in girls and dr*ugs |

School and university is akin to learning to drive. They teach you how to pass a test, which is regulated at a set standard. However, it's only when you explore the subject for yourself, do you truly become knowledgeable in it. |

I learned/learnt to be literate.
Amongst many other things I also learned about the speed / distance / time 'triangle', which educated me about roadside Average Speed Cameras...which would 'grace' our roads many years later.
When I observe unwitting drivers braking hard at the approach of said camera, it's an indication that they clearly missed that basic edification at school. |

"That when you were working you went.. "thank fuck I went to school and learned that"?
The coefficient of friction?
Differential calculus?
Split infinitives?
Newton's laws of motion?
"
Fuck all at school except how to be a student and how to read a map...lol!
Uni was better. |

"I learned quite a lot of trauma responses."
Hugs.
Some trauma for me from primary school bullying. However, secondary school was way better because everyone was probably neurodivergent like me and we all wore glasses probably from reading in the dark. Lol!

Let's see.
A love and appreciation for language (including how to speak properly, SALT only went so far for me but school really helped. Still get some words wrong very occasionally - one particular number but it helped).
Critical understanding of text. Mainly thanks to an amazing teacher. Actually I'm going to whack on thinking to that and broaden it slightly.
The joy of other cultures, whether that's through a gastronomic lense, a socio-political one... it helped me with a desire to travel, learn more about others whether that's through their mythos, architecture or even music.
Interpersonal communication skills. I'm quite good at passing 95% of the time (who doesn't love a random percentage) and I think that's largely due to the school environment.
How to make a really good crumble.

Hugs! I thought all girls/women were horrible when I went to an all-girls primary school.
Secondary school was mixed so felt much better. |

The fact that I did so well was due to the rules!!
Once I scraped the rules and routine in adulthood, all hell broke loose. Lol! My Brian the Brain cannot be left to its own devices under any circumstances. Lol! |

No chance mate, in the Caribbean education system I was in.
Not sure how many English schools did this in the 80s and 90s either. |

I learned about stripping and rebuilding engines, in vehicle maintenance engineering.
How to impress the teachers, by doing all my CDT Design & Realisation work at home. One tried to call me out by asking to turn a bowl, I did a rather nice one from a piece of scrap mahogany my dad had lying around.
Apart from that, how to annoy the staff at Toys R Us by pretending to nick things. I just hid them in a different area of the store. |

"School not much other than how to drink and not get caught, Uni I learned a lot although I've forgotten most of it now.
Mrs "
Hugs. Uni saved my ass in more ways than one.
I studied law and international relations at uni. I learnt how not to get punched in the face because I've offended other cultures and what to do when I get to the police station and embassy when I have to punch someone in the face because of other cultures' beliefs about a large black woman. Lol!
Went to Rios yesterday. "Sir just because I'm black, plump, smiling, naked and sat next to you in the Jacuzzi does not mean I'm easy to manipulate into unwanted and uninvited touching." I didn't punch him. Diplomatic crisis and world war averted.

Lol! I was the one not wearing a bra on my AAA cups. then one of the boys and secondary school discovered when he went to pull my bra straps. Lol! Still only wore a bra on days I had art class with him. Didn't see him the other days. lol! |

Sounds like a great time at school! I only did one year of technical design, woodwork and metal work but it was great fun. then the examination funnel took over and we had to do more traditional subjects. |

Ah I did. Up to college it was a mix of state and private. Infant and Junior were definitely more Montessori style and that really benefited me. Helped the insatiable curiosity grow. I think more educational settings, especially younger years should adopt that style. |

Think you're right. Too often at school kids do things because "if they don't"... We need to Foster a love of and enthusiasm for learning that sets you up for life. Learn how to learn... Whether that's learning fourier transforms or languages or drama or bits bytes and nibbles... |

Maths and physics for weight and balance calculations, centres of gravity. Geography for meteorology and geology and navigation. History to avoid past mistakes. English language to be able to express myself coherently, both verbally and in writing. A fair few basic handcraft skills too… |

Yup. 13-year-old me would have punched him in the lunchbox and shouted and screamed and swore. Uni helped me calm down...a bit....then I got married and moved to London....all hell broke loose. Lol! |

All they teach at school these days is how to pass exams, nothing about how to deal with life after school. They're mollycoddled to the n'th degree now & won't stand a chance when they enter the real world & find that there's no body there to wipe their arses for them & sadly it's not their fault, most can't read a clock face but are taught ridiculous mathematical equations that they'll probably never ever use! |

Coincidentally, that reminds me a lot of my French teacher as well. She used to wear dresses and skirts that fell just above the knee, and had a habit of sitting on desks, facing the class, with her feet up on a chair. Every so often, when she got down off the desk, you got a lovely view up her skirt, and her white knickers under black or tan tights.
I ended up with a Grade 2 pass at the end of the 5th year! |

That education cripples creativity and different ways of thinking that are desperately needed in the real world.... My most useful useful education was done by myself at home and in general my employers and collegues truly appreciated it. |

I learned what interested me.
I gave notice to a few teachers that their subjects were of no interest to me and I could spend the time better in private study on the subjects I enjoyed.
They agreed and I focussed on what I was more interested in. |

When I was a primary school there was a book with a picture of dinosaurs in it. The diplodocus style ones were in water and all of them were sad looking and grey. Imagine my anger and distress when what I was taught turned out to be false!! These days dinosaurs are colourful, have feathers, facial movements and run about! It really is an outrage. |
