Creeped out

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Last month I was walking my dog in a cemetery and two men (separately) approached me. It was deserted at the time.

The first one who had just been standing near a gravestone came up and asked if I had a phone number for a nearby business. I said no, he asked me again. Still no. I walked away, around the corner.

A second man walked past me, turned around, walked back and asked me if I was [redacted] on the Internet. It was my previous Fab username. I've never showed my face on Fab. I kept my face emotionless and said no. He asked again. I said no. Walked away.

Today I walked my dog in the park. A few people around. I walked along a wide path and a man came towards me and was very close to me. This threw me as there was loads of space and no need for him to do that. He muttered something I didn't understand and I didn't reply, walked swiftly on. He kept looking at me as I walked around the park. I detoured when I realised he was heading in the same direction as me 10 mins later. I went to an area 15 feet away from the path. He spoke to me again - several words I didn't understand (I think he was from the ME). I waited until he passed and then had to backtrack and take a longer route home as he was still watching me and I felt uncomfortable.

By the time I got home both times, I felt seriously unnerved and creeped out. Am I overreacting?

Absolutely unacceptable. Even if they did know you and had previously met you in a totally consensual basis - it is absolutely a no to approach someone without intent and express consent.

"Honestly expected someone to tell me to stop being a princess! My hands were shaking when I came home earlier. "

Hugs! You are not being a Princess!

I live in London and unfortunately, there are attacks in parks and cemeteries all of the time and yes it can happen in broad daylight. Unfortunately, some of these attacks have resulted in unaliving.

In my local area the university has put on free self-defence classes for women.

I have Borderline/Emotionally unstable personality disorder and I know that the mental health services are woefully inadequate and keep those of us who are a danger to ourselves and other people medicated and off the streets!! And I've lived in this area for 11 years and it still hasn't gotten better!

If I'm planning to go for a walk/cycle with not many people around I dress like a man. Hair up ( no ponytails that perps like to grab), cap peak down and hood up (the mask also helps)... black, navy or grey or fluorescent oversized jacket. All my trainers are black. I do get a lot of my sport and exercise clothing from the men's section anyway.

I play 5 a side and when coming back late in winter..I sling my boots with the metal studs over my shoulder. 1. I look like a man and 2. the boots could be used as a weapon.

Another lady on Fab said that her dad told her some cheap deodorant can be used as mace. Mace and tasers are illegal for women to carry in the UK. In America, some women carry concealed handbag guns.

I have many r@p£ alarms which are very loud and one time I accidentally pulled it in the train at night..all the men were freaked out and all the women just smiled at me because they knew what it was. I just apologised embarrassingly.

I don't know if you regularly walk these routes and your dog is easily identifiable but try to vary your routes and times and doggie accessories. There is one lady in my area who had a distinctive greyhound and I was able to recognise her even without the greyhound. She was surprised but people like me who have autistic traits pick up on details that no one else notices.

Not meaning to scare you but check out the Suzy Lamplugh Trust for more women's safety tips. You can also contact your Local neighbourhood police team to report these incidents and any other safety tips they might have.

I'm a trauma and @ss@ult survivor but I refused to be hidden away cowering.

You should call the police, and without mentioning fab, tell the that men are approaching women in the park and following them. They may put a uniformed or non uniformed patrol out there, preventing any future possible assaults frome taking place.

I know it sucks and we should be able to wear whatever we want but I hide my boobs in public all of the time. They only come out in the gym and while swimming and on dates/meets.

I'm not sure if most men's eyes are just trained to go there or what but the number of men just generally looking at my face and then looking down creeps me out. Even my manager at work when my boobs was popping out of my uniform, he noticed but not the other female staff...Embarassing...

Still sorry that this happened. People are entitled to keep their lives private. People think just because they've seen a photo of you that they know you. No, they don't, they are strangers. That's why famous people and people in the public eye have stalkers. It's bang out of order.

Yeah i think this is good advice generally - you can call 111 to do it. They'll want details of dates/times and descriptions (clothing etc), so write down as much as you can remember

Stay safe, i would be totally freaked out - i always walk alone - not even a dog and also go through the graveyard /crem and parks , because they are so peaceful

I avoided the cemetery for ages afterwards but my dog loves it there so it wasn't fair to stay away. It's next to a primary school and a very wide open space! A family park in the middle of day should be exactly where I can walk my dog. I've never seen either place mentioned on Fab in local updates. I feel really cross that because some dickhead man thinks he can freak me out I have to remove an enjoyable outing for myself and my dog?

I wear very nondescript clothing, mostly black. I will never pass as a man lol but I'm wearing a baggy jumper, camo trousers and trainers today. I have boobs and I exist and no matter what I wear men stare at them. I keep my head down and stay away from people because my dog is reactive.

It's a very sad state of affairs that some men feel they can approach alone women Or get very close it could be they are simply not thinking their actions through but maybe they should start.

You don't get to decide what creeps somebody else out.

A stranger getting very close in a wide open space and muttering something is inappropriate and creepy. Would you also care to explain how somebody attracts weirdness simply by walking their dogs? Yet another example of it must be something the woman is doing wrong somehow!

I don't think you are overreacting at all. There was one time when I was being served in a shop, and someone behind me quietly (but loud enough for me to register) my Fab username, and even though I was shocked, I made sure I didn't react.

I left, but the guy walked up to me outside the shop and muttered it again. Once more, I didn't react. Obviously annoyed, he came straight out and asked me if I was [FAB username] - to which I channelled my inner Hattie Jacques and told him that I had no idea who he was, who I thought I am, and if he didn't stop harassing me, I would report him to the police.

I must have being either convincing and/or intimidating, because he scarpered and I've never seen him again.

And I'm going to keep going to both places. I don't go on regular days or regular times. I need to get out of the house for my dog and my mental health. I will buy a whistle/alarm. But I'm not letting fuckwit men dictate where I can walk.

My last paragraph wasn't addressed to anyone in particular btw and not to the poster I quoted.

What register would that be? Assuming that the men could be identified

I don't think what the op has described is stalking. That needs to be persistent and over a period of time. These are more one off incidents. The shocking thing about all of it is that no woman will be even mildly surprised that it happened

Voyeurism gets you on the register all there has to be is evidence that they are watching OP and receiving gratification from it ..

Don’t have to be naked ..

As others have said I would report it. May be innocent but approaching women like that is not right and will make anyone feel uncomfortable.

"Last month I was walking my dog in a cemetery and two men (separately) approached me.

No not at all.

Definitely ask the police to record the incident. I mean what the fuck are they thinking. Get an alarm if not ready... Get a photo if you can... And be a bit careful for a while.

Definitely not, be careful walking on your own. Unless your dog is absolutely huge, with teeth the size of fence posts.

Absolutely this^^^^

If you don’t feel you need to report for yourself, please report it for the woman they finally do end up assaulting, because in the vast majority of these cases that’s what sadly will happen, it’s just a matter of time.

Me and my husband were speaking about this the other day and he said he is shocked at the way I get spoken to by man compared to him. I actually recently got asked when it was something to do with me and my medical condition if they could talk to my husband as the he had spoken to him on the phone earlier! Made an inquiry about something but when they phoned back I wasn't in so he spoke to the man and when he phoned back he don't want to speak to me wanted to speak to him! To me the first two sounded like they were meeting people they didn't know, for example arranged a meet on a site like this and had to identify themselves by asking a question. We have done this before to make sure we were meeting the right person ( not in a graveyard though)

You say you don't show your face on here but then said you show if they do,so it could possibly have been someone you have spoken to but that doesn't excuse him approaching you in real life though

To the comment of attracting weirdos...I always do that, everytime I got on the train going to work years ago you could guarantee a weirdo or d*unk would sit next to me.

Either way, I like chatting to people and will chat to anyone who will listen and answer anyone who speaks to me, be that male or female but there has been times were I have not been comfortable so cut it short or not answer.

It is a shame as walking a dog normally gets people chatting but only if you are comfortable

Can I remind people that they can't use a second profile to get round a permanent ban on the forum. Most of the time you give yourselves away and a Mod will notice or someone will report you.

If you want a previous forum ban lifted you should ask Admin to review it for you.If you don't hear anything back then you should assume they are not lifting it and you can't use a second one.

I am going to close this now.
