"In 1672, a Dutch mob killed and ate Johan de Witt, leader of the Dutch Republic (although not technically their prime minister, as is often claimed). "
Maybe the mob mixed up Burgomeister and McBurgermeister |

"The Pig War of 1859, which saw the UK fight the US and lose. It technically lasted 12 years.
Fortunately, the only casualty was the pig. "
It happened on the anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta |

"The Defenestration of Prague, 1618.
Probably not that weird, and actually quite an important event, but I love the word. "

"Brian Harvey from E17 running over himself after he’d eaten too many baked potatoes "
Beat me to it!
So instead I'll mention Gazza turning up with a KFC, a housecoat, fishing rod and a few tins to calm down Raoul Moat. |

"I would recommend The History Guy on YouTube if for loads of snippets of obscure/unusual and/or bizarre historical events. "
If we're doing recommendations, I would mention the sadly discontinued Futility Closet podcast, which also deals with unusual stories from history. |

"The Manhattan cross rip of 1984. Saw a documentary about it.
A documentary ?
Yeh you should check it out, it was very well done
I thought Manhattan Crossrip is a fantasy film ?"
It's a reference to the climax of the 1984 Ghostbusters film. |

There were two occasions in the Second World War when American and German soldiers fought side by side against the SS.
The first, the Battle of Castle Itter, was an operation to rescue prisoners that included former prime ministers, generals, a tennis star, and Charles de Gaulle's sister. It’s comparatively unknown and would make a great film with no Hollywood embellishments required.
The second, Operation Cowboy, was a mission to rescue the Lipizzaner horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. They’d been st0len by the Nazis, and would have been slaughtered by the Russians if they’d reached them first. Fortunately the Americans and the Wehrmacht were able to rescue them from the SS, right under the noses of the advancing Soviets.

1904 Olympic marathon race…. the winner hitched a lift until just before the finish. More to the race than that, a few firsts and some bizarre dress choices. |
