Just heard an ad on the radio that 1 in 5 kids don't own a book? Can you believe that?

The amount of people I know that don't have even a small selection of books, much less a book shelf or shelves, is staggering. I get that people read digital these days etc, but even so..

The analogy doesn't really work any more these days, but any house that has more DVDs than Books is dysfunctional if you ask me £0.02

Could this be more because of the fact you can download books onto various tech things now instead of buying the actual hardcopy and not having enough places in homes to store them now?

My 11 year old daughter has over a 100 books on a kindle and probably only a handful in her room.

Thats how she likes to read.

My teenage grandchildren don't read any more. One will read a Wimpy Kid book if we get him one at Christmas, but the others aren't interested now.

Anyone under the age of 14 should have access to literature and be encouraged to read, according to me.

My son loved reading his school reading books and used to buy books at the book fair until he went to Secondary school. I got him the Adrian Mole books, which he read, but that was it.

My daughters still read when they have time.

I can’t stand bookshelves (I’m allergic to clutter) so a kindle is perfect for me.

My 17 year old uses a kindle too but all her childhood books are safely stored away

That statistic doesn’t really surprise me but I don’t think it’s anything new

You may also be shocked to learn OP that quite a few schools now don't even use a pen and paper in lessons anymore either.

Apart from my children's PE/Art/DT and cooking lessons everything else is done on ipads at the desks now too.

All the resource books they require are online as well.

This is true, the OP is just a statistic with no further context... What are the ages of the children? Where are they based? What year(s) is this in comparison to? Have they never owned a book in their lives or is this a current survey?

Also maybe some of these children don't physically own books but have access to a library? I mainly used libraries when I was a kid because I read so much and my parents weren't about to spend money on 1-2 new books per week!

I’m not shocked at all. There are parents that didn’t have books and don’t see the value in books. There are also those that can’t afford books. Books are expensive. My teenage daughter went shopping with friends yesterday. She bought a paperback book £10.99. For some spending that on a book is out of reach. We do have libraries but they are few and far between these days. I used to take mine to the library but spent more time in somewhere like Waterstones. The kids would browse through the books and pick one to buy. We’d spend hours in there. Reading and books is an integral part of a child’s education and shouldn’t be another thing that is restricted by poverty

I'm not having the expensive thing though as a deterrent (whilst I do agree the fashionable new best sellers list books are indeed expensive) but school gates, charity shops, car boots, freecycle, phone boxes, we have folks leaving boxes of books at the end of their path and saying help yourself.....

Well... I can't find anything re McDonald's ad campaign...

But I did find this from the nationalliteracytrust...

Some interesting points...cut and pasted...

Key findings

Compared to children who don't have a book of their own, children who own books are:

Six times more likely to read above the level expected for their age (22% vs 3.6%)

Nearly three times more likely to enjoy reading (56.2% vs 18.4%)

More than twice as likely to agree that reading is cool (42.5% vs 16.6%)

Further findings include:

383,755 children and young people in the UK don't have a book of their own

Disadvantaged children are more likely than their peers to not own a book (9.3% vs 6%)

However the gap in book ownership between disadvantaged children and their more advantaged peers has almost halved in the past six years (from 6.1 percentage points in 2013 to 3.3 percentage points in 2019

I kind of get that... I mean why not use technology to help where it can? ... But isn't an ipad a good deal more expensive than a book? Or 50 school books?

Definitely.. lack of space could be an issue and with closing of libraries and money shortages as well as availability on the internet.

Though the internet does have some free book apps the books aren’t always available in full books x

Absolutely love it, i can never say no to reading a 2nd story of the night!

Books are cheap media especially from charity shops, heck they are free from the library & they offer so many other services too!

On the most part a love of reading & books is passed down from the parents.

Health visitors are supposed to hand out 3x books from Bookstart, during the first 4 years of a child's life. We got all 3 with my son but only 2 with our daughter. However, we have literally thousands of books (including the Bookstart books of my son's from 16-20yrs ago!)

I don't know... Normally maccy adverts go straight over my head but this tagline lodged with me so I had to relisten. But to some of the points.. Literacy opens or closes so many doors...books (in my own opinion and experiences) are marvellous parenting tools... I love books. I'm guessing McDonald's will be reaping some kind of benefit from their advertising dollars though. And if they are philanthropic... Good for them. Scratch and sniff books maybe?

Very rarely frequent the maccy d’s - but the books that they give out are abridged versions of very popular books - the boxes normally have a book token for a couple of quid on the side so if they wanted to pick up the full copy it’s a little bit cheaper.

They've been criticised re plastic toys so they have provided books too. Apparently since 2013......

It's a marketing ploy without a doubt to me.

There’s definitely an element of truth in this. My wife is an avid reader but probably buys about 5 per cent of the amount of physical books that she used to. Doesn’t mean that she reads less, she probably reads more than she used to.

Obviously they are trying to improve public perception of the brand, but the initiative looks a very positive one to me.

As for holding the lumpy bit at the end, you’re obviously thinking of something else. In golf you need to wrap your hands delicately but securely around the shaft …
