"We used to have a car that you had to pump the windscreen washers with your foot.

Also had one with a starting handle that went in through a funny little slot in the front. "

Blast from the past. Less things went wrong then. Maybe took you hours and not comfortable but they tended not to break x

Rust!

Doors a different colour to the car because they rusted and fell apart.

An Ammeter and Oil pressure Guage.

They were in nearly every car, mainly chrome and black 'smiths' clocks. Looked lovely.

"A thing to restrict air flow on start up, that definitely rhymes with broke, , baroque and woke.

But is that thing that happens when you don't chew food properly.

"

Yup - and we all knew just the right combination of this thing and the number of presses on the gas pedal to make the car start in the morning.

This was a different combination depending on time of year and time of day !

"Car made of metal rather than the flimsy tin on today. "

I would have said that but the other way around.

When I started driving (and for a good while after) a 10 year old car was a rust bucket and ready for the scrap yard.

These days a 12 plate is classed as nearly new.

And they have a massive A imprinted on them so you know whodunnit.

Costa Blanca Spain...

Volt meter, oil pressure gauge, opening quarter lights, ch()ke (manual or auto) after market undersealing, sealed beam headlights, metal dashboards, column change gears, front bench seats, that's about all I can think of but I'll probably remember a few more.

Under the bonnet: Points, condenser, coil (no it didn't stop the car getting pregnant ) glass domed mechanical fuel pumps, dynamo (as opposed to alternator) and OHV engines with adjustable tappets.

Suspension/brakes Etc: Front drum brakes, steering box, king pins, and leaf springs come to mind.

Redex additive was supposed to help keep engines from this.
