Me.
But seriously, plenty of opportunities and so much to explore, do and eat. I do find the people from Manchester are proper down to earth too, you get what you see, laid back and easy going. I love the buildings, the architecture. Trafford Centre is LOVLEH. |

There are many great things to come out of Manchester.
Train, plane, coach, car, tram.
I'm a Manchester lad and avoid the city centre as much as I can.
Only use it to pass through or for gigs.
It can be great for gigs.

"Andy Burnham. Hot as hell
Think he is scousejust checked. He was born in Lancashire. "
Liverpool WAS in Lancashire, he was born in 1970.
Then the new county of Merseyside was formed in 1974 and carved up chunks of South West Lancashire (Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton and St Helens) as well as most of the English part of the Wirral.
This county has two unconnected coastlines that face each other. Devon can't claim that one!
So, even to this day, family tree hunters still have to access Lancashire based record offices, to do their research.
I moved to St Helens in 1973/4 and have no memory of it being part of Lancashire...well, I was a bit too young to notice. |

Some of the Wirral (most of it) was poached from Cheshire, not Lancashire. Hence the Wirral having CH- postcodes. |

Did you know that St Helens has Liverpool and Warrington based post codes, L &WA? |

Within the old county of Lancashire, St Helens is relatively new as a town in its own right. It originated as just a chapel in the middle of nowhere. |

Yup, St Elyn's, it really came of age in the Industrial revolution.
Coal, glass and cold remedies, gave the town and world Pilkingtons glass and Rockware glass and an obscure company called Beechams. "Out of the Earth: light" was one of the towns mottos. |

Manchester?
Come out?
Does that sound like an idea for Canal Street's new strap line?
"if you're thinking of coming-out tonight, then we're right up your street."
Speaking of Streets, how many Corrie sets have there been over the years? (must be at least three) |

Socialism gave rise to the Clarion newspaper and a whole family of cycling clubs called Clarion, as in Fenland Clarion in Peterborough (been there, done that, got the jersey!).
Micheal Portillo even visited them on his train programme and had to drink a pint of tea in a room full of Tory haters!
"More arsenic Mikey?" |

There's a street called Coronation Street, all back to back terraced houses, in Salford. Granada Studios might technically have been in Salford too, not sure where the line is drawn. |

Competitive Football???
William McGregor devised a new way of testing the best teams. Each club would play each other twice, home and away, during one year. Thus was born the Football League at a meeting at the Royal Hotel, Manchester, on 17 April 1888.
PS - I'd say The Smiths though |

Andy Burnham was born near The Old Roan, near to Aintree on the outskirts of Liverpool in what used to be Lancashire.
He grew up in Culceth though which is near Warrington which half way between Liverpool and Manchester....

"Marks and Sparks
They are from Leeds not Manchester.
Their first market stall said "don't ask the price. Everything is 1d""
^^^She knows her retail history. My Granny worked for M&S and got an award for long service. We learned about the history of M&S from her |

Marks and Spencers is from Manchester, first was in Prestwich "
Michael Marks was Polish, born in the-then Russian empire. He died in Manchester, yes, but lived in Leeds when he first arrived in England. Thomas Spencer was born in Skipton, Yorkshire. They ran a market stall together in Leeds which became the Penny Bazaar shop, also in Leeds. The Penny Bazaar later moved to Cheetham Hill in Manchester, yes, but it had formed in Leeds before this. |

Alan Turing was not from Manchester but did some of his most important work on computing and AI at the University of Manchester. He has a memorial in Central Manchester.
As well as his computing and mathematical genius, Turing was a world class long distance runner who might have competed in the Olympics as a young man except for injuries, then WW2. |
