Rich Friends by Portugal. The Man. Not only a great song, but really well made video that you have to like... because of the implication...

Michael Jackson has so many epic videos. he certainly did one of my all time favourite artists "
I still listen to him a lot. A great artist and I think he’s seriously underrated these days. |

"Duran Duran The Chauffeur. One of the sexiest music videos ever. Even though it's now 40 years old it's aged incredibly well.
https://youtu.be/1B__8N5d_LA"

"As I'm the OP can I throw in two suggestions...
Verve ... Bittersweet Symphony
Spitting Image .. Land of Confusion "
Totally agree with the Verve choice.
Loved the way he bumped his way through the crowded street |

That was just a hands down rip off of the much better Massive Attack- Unfinished Sympathy (They also stole the main hook of the track from The Rolling Stones- so pretty much just out and out thievery all round).
Now if you want some jaw dropping stuff to bend your head- look no further than the works of the promo worlds top two directors ever...Chris Cunningham & Michael Gondry
Cunningham is renowned for his dark, twisted but humorous work and fantastic attention to detail- Gondry is a wizard at digital manipulation and blowing your mind to the point that i still can't work out how he did some things.
Mr Cunningham
Aphex Twin- Come to daddy, Windowlicker (watch the directors extended edit) & rubber johnny (the latter being more of an art project the two did together).
Squarepusher- Come on my selector
Madonna- Frozen
Portished- Only you (shot under water, they digitally removed every single bubble...back in the days when computers were expensive, clunky and slooooooooow)
and possibly his finest work...
Bjork- All is full of love
Its utterly exquisite! not only is it perfectly shot, light and edited, Cunningham designed and built the robotic systems (clever fooker- used to make the spitting image puppets). Its also what i consider to be the perfect amalgamation of music and imagery
and then it was no more...he pretty much shut up shot doing video and has reputedly taken up writing computer code for 'something'? he's a tad aloof!
Then we have the French dude!
Mr Gondry is the master of visual kinkeryfuckery. He uses every physical and digital trick to twist your melons man. Even his early videos are amazing such as Lucas Secon- Lucas with the lid off
He made the iconic Daft Punk- Around the world
The seamless visual palindrome of Ciba Matto- Sugar Water
The head scaratchingly brilliant Massive Attack- Protection (spoiler...he actually built a giant rotating apartment block and camera rig)
He gave us multiple Kylies with 'Come in to my world' one of the best uses of a Milo motion rig and seamless compositing i've seen.
He headfucked us with The Chemical Brothers- Let forever be... and possibly his best work was also for them with their 'Star Guitar' track.
First watch, it takes ages to work out whats happening, then it clicks, then you struggle to work out how its done...then you realise its all CGI (and this is 20 year ago)...and then when you did a little deeper, you find the video he shot at home to convince the band and record company to invest a huge chunk of cash is a crazy idea (look for making of star guitar on youtube).
I could go on with just these two directors- huge body of visual brilliance and how they influenced everything from adverts to hollywood films...but then i wouldn't mention the band who probably embraced the world of music video better than anyone...OK Go.
Every video is brilliant and you need to watch them numerous times for the sheer amount of content- the best possibly being End Love, for no other reason than it was shot real time over about 20 hours using still images and a fuck ton of choreography (and some other camera trickery)...but just go and watch the OK Go back catalogue because it fascinating and enthralling!
That lot should keep you entertained for a few hours, if you go off down the associated rabbit holes

It was said that Madness didn’t release singles they released videos I did like Baggy Trousers and Our House. In the summer I like Club Tropicana by Wham seems like the perfect summer song and video to me. |
