by the big field

Trent Reznor- He wrote Hurt...say no more!

Wayne Hussey- Go listen to Tower of Strength and tell me its not a brilliant up lifting anthemic classic

Miles Hunt- Milo is one of the most prolific, underrated and consistently awesome song writers of the last 40 years, and still going strong!

David Gedge- Another of the old indie scene stalwarts, writing uniquely about the joys of everyday life

Jim Bob & Fruitbat (Carter USM)- some of the most honest socially focussed lyrics you can find- still relevant 30 years on

Paul Frederick- Yes, you've no idea who he is...but you should do

Some bloke called Stevie Wonder- knocked out some belters apparently

I always thought Jagger/Richards were underrated and totally overshadowed by Lennon/McCartney..

So my vote goes to the glimmer twins.

Thank you mick n keef.

Not ashamed to admit I’m a big fan of Diane Warren as a song writer.

I like a lot of the names already thrown about in this thread too, particularly Ed Sheeran and Freddie M

Too many.

I’m gonna throw in Gilbert O’sullivsn as I never believe he gets credit for his clever lyrics.

And Billy Joel as a great that was always up against other greats such as Mcartney and Lennon. (Paul asked me to write his name first )

Great song writers who can't sing Dylan, Young and Steven Wilson.

Great songwriters unappreciated in their lifetime. Costello, Gingerwildheart, Paul Westerberg, Robert Smith, Martin Gore, Liam Howlett and Ed/Tom Chemical.

Rather aptly for this place, Mr Martin L Gore has written some fantastically beautiful, dark, strange, uplifting and full on kinky lyrics- and along with the rest of the band, some of the best music you'll find anywhere

Worthing

In the world of heavy rock...Ronnie Dio was a platinum selling artist with Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his solo band Dio. I was trying to think of another rock musician that did that with 3 different bands but drew a blank. He contributed not only lyrics but the music as well. Much missed.

Steve Earle

Gretchen Peters

Matracia Berg

Kim Richey

Townes Van Zant. Etc etc

Unfortunately, there are so many Americana and country songwriters who you will never hear talked about in mainstream media in UK and rarely hear played. They tend to write adult songs often telling stories, so the songs are like mini movies.
