Is sport aggressive?

I was having a conversation with someone the other day.

One side said aggression in sport is good, The other side said aggression makes you lose the calm and collected thinking

What do you think?

In some sports controlled focused aggression is good. Uncontrolled random aggression isn't helpful

Probably handy in boxing, and less useful in table tennis or dressage.

Sport isn't aggressive, people are. Aggression can help opponents get the best out of each other. I think of sport as a collaboration instead of a competition.

It’s really depends. In football players like Wayne Rooney wouldn’t be anywhere near as good without aggression whereas other more technically gifted players don’t need aggression to be at the top of their game.

Before anyone jumps on this, I’m not saying Rooney wasn’t technically gifted.

As a rugby player and the position I play aggression can be handy and it helps getting into other peoples heads.

Depends on the sport but you need to find balance nobody can be agressive rage mode for 80 or 90 mins the trick is to do it in spurts but yes in my sport its necessary every contact is about dominating the contact area and if i can intimidate the man in front with a few nostril flares all the better

Competitive sport is always going to be aggressive because your not going to win if your not striving to beat the opponent.

Maybe physically aggressive but the fact that one person is out to beat the other otherwise what would be the point ?

All this it’s the taking part that counts is what they tell you when you lose

Controlled Aggression is necessary...anger will cloud your focus and make you loose the match/game/fight

I think competition and dominance is a fairly natural thing and brings about good performance and some contact sports need a bit more and that becomes aggression like boxing, rugby tackling. Tennis would be a good example , lots of aggressive players do well but there’s no contact

Depends upon the sport.

My favourite sport ice hockey is aggressive but if that was taken out of it I don’t think I’d watch it

It's pretty much covered above. It's nuanced. You can play chess and be aggressive. Or gymnastics. Or swimming. It can be physical, mental, emotional aggression. Some people need it to key into their best abilities. Some provoke uncontrolled aggression in others to take away their focus and obtain an advantage. Many sports now use sports psychologists to help channel aggression to positive outcomes.

Absolutely this

Wild, uncontrolled rage will negatively affect physical coordination, timing etc.

Controlled focused aggression good. Uncontrolled rage bad.

It also depends on the sport and if it relies on fine motor control (adrenaline bad for this) or not.

I used to play. Aggression, whilst rough, was controlled. I'm gonna a hit you, and I'm gonna hit you hard, but I'm gonna do it as safely as possible. Heads up fucker.

That’s the way it should be played, can you imagine it without that. It would just be called poke the puck
