Another vote for Bulgarian Split Squats here.

Especially when I put pauses in them, or go with a really slow tempo.

Somewhere In The Ether…

A good question; I’m not so keen on leg work as a whole but nonetheless feel compelled to perform it (physique balance and all that after all)

As regards my most disliked exercise though; static holds such as planks and L-sits which I find rather tedious to be honest.

You know the prowler? The sled thingy that people load with weights and push along the floor? I can't do that so I attach it behind my wheelchair and tow it instead. I've towed 100kg behind the chair as a max, we usually do 6-8 reps (there and back on the indoor track = one rep).

It's me (over 90kg), plus the chair (15kg) plus the prowler (no idea of weight) PLUS 100kg in plates. So my shoulders/arms are moving over 200kg in total weight. The chair doesn't move unless I move it.

Skipping: despite the fact that up and down the country little girls in playgrounds can sing whilst doing this, I can't do it.

I have dysfunctional breathing, which means my abdomen is trying to tear itself from my ribs, during the landing and jumping phases. The breathing is ridiculously shallow and high.

Just like a badly setup timing belt on a car engine, it is very inefficient and causes more problems than it should.

How does it feel? Bloody painful.

I'd rather do the plank, as that's dead easy and I enjoy that one.

"Along came the Bulgarian Split Squats

What exercise do you force yourself to do despite hating it? Or do you do that "exercise should be fun so I only do what I enjoy" hippy dippy bullshit

Far from a hippy but yeah I only do exercises that I enjoy.

That bit was only tongue in cheek but glad you found something you always enjoy doing. Not even a axercise you slightly dislike? "

Nah I only do alot of walking, some core strength, balance and weights.

I dropped burpees and all the stuff I didn't enjoy years back.

"Skipping: despite the fact that up and down the country little girls in playgrounds can sing whilst doing this, I can't do it.

Planks always make me feel like I'm dying even though I've got good core strength "

Let's swap: I'll do your planks...

Ouch! That really sucks and it's easy to forget to regulate your normal breathing during exercises, let alone if you have problems. Is there anything that can help?"

Scissors: cut the rope! throw it away.

Even at rest I've been recorded at 25 breaths per minute, not 12-15, like it should be.

Brain reprogramming/hipnosis might work.

"Bulgarian Split Squats were the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title too I tend to avoid them now as I'm avoiding loading my lumbar as much as possible So reverse flyes are probably my worst ones now, just a horrendous burning with such a low weight

LvM"

I didn't really notice it too much on my lower back, it was mainly trying to keep balanced that I struggled with. Good shout in the reverse flys, I don't do them as I do face pulls instead which are pretty decent

That's fair enough, I suppose you can enjoy all your exercise then

Holding a dumbbell in front of you can help with balance. Depending on how heavy you go of course!

"They don't bother me actually.

Hate burpees with a passion.

Pointless exercise, made popular by Joe Wicks "

We were asked to do burpees in primary school PE, in year 5. That would have been approx 1994/5, I'm not sure Joe Wicks was even born then!!

TIL there was a difference between the V squat and the hack squat deadlifts are good for powerlifting but not overly necessary if you just want to build a good body I find so you're not missing out

"I find pistol squats harder than Bulgarian.

Elevated pike press is probably the exercise I least enjoy. For now anyway.

Just googled the elevated pike press. What the hell is that?!

I do them with my feet on a big gym ball just for a little extra sadism "

Of course, because who doesn't love a bit of sadism with their workout

I have a knee problem which means anything plyo or explosive is somewhat of a painful challenge for me, and as a result I tend to avoid too much jumping, lunging or leg isolation.

That said, I'm starting to really quite enjoy burpees (I know... I'm a mentalist), even the jump!

What I'm really not liking at the moment is skipping... I keep telling the trainers at the gym that women of a certain age should not be expected to skip without potentially embarrassing consequences!!

A lot of PTs and gym types have no idea about pelvic floor health. Be really careful (without wanting to sound condescending). I speak as someone with major PF issues and having had one surgery for it already. I was 34 when I had surgery but had PF issues for a very long time before.

I know. I'm actually training to be a fitness instructor myself, and currently going through peri menopause. I'm prime placed to be able to highlight many concerns that the young lads offering fitness advice to more mature ladies simply don't understand. And it's an area I want to move into as I work on my qualifications and figure out my business plan.

Of course, I'm well aware that PF and other similar symptoms and conditions highlighted during peri menopause can happen at almost any age, but there is a clear deficiency in understanding about women's fitness and training needs as most published research is based on men's needs.

You boys always get the focus and attention!

My PT actually came with me to pelvic floor physio clinic, to learn more about the issues. I think it's something that needs to be widely understood by anyone who offers exercise advice and classes to women of any age.

I’d rather do tricep push ups than them - and I hate those!

Widely understood in what way? Like how exercise can cause issues or exacerbate them? Or aid them?

Understood that women of any age are at much higher risk of developing pelvic floor problems than men. That certain exercises are very high risk in causing or exacerbating such issues, especially in more susceptible women. For example, high intensity aerobics or weightlifting exercise classes for new mothers are potentially a MASSIVE risk. Huge. But there are tons of post natal exercise classes that seem to take nothing into account.

50% of women will develop symptomatic pelvic floor problems in their lives. That's huge. There is now intention to start covering pelvic floor health in girl's PE lessons and PSHE but obviously this is likely to be a very small amount of time/opportunity.

Thanks. Will show my wife.

Never really considered it and the only time I remember any mention was when our kids were born.
