Random Cow Factoid: Did you know that an average cow spends around eight solid hours eating a day and will drink approximately the equivalent of a whole bath tub of water every day?
Has a result, they urinate approximately 30 gallons and produce about 60 pounds of manure per day to.
Absolutely fascinating is it not?

A cow only produces milk for her calf when pregnant and for a short while after same as a human .. all milk produced from cows is coming from a pregnant cow .. they impregnated over and over to keep producing milk .. there is no such thing as a dairy cow walking around producing milk all year round without being pregnant .. just a little fact for ya |

We wintered seven cows plus calves indoors and only needed to fill their water barrel twice a day so the bathtub part isn’t quite right I’m afraid x |

I used to work with cows, they are mostly nice animals but there are some real psychopath cows about, they start to produce milk when they calve & will carry on producing milk for about a year although the yield reduces as time goes on , most farmers aim for a cow to produce 1 calf a year milk for about 300 days & have 6 weeks dry |

Correct. Grass fed beef agriculture actually sequesters more co2 every year than any wood up to 20 years old. Grass fed beef also promotes a huge range of environmental benefits from pollinations to biodiversity and many habitat management benefits for thousands of other species further down the food chain, flies, beetles, worms .. they are essential to a balanced ecology. |

A lactating cow will produce milk as long as it's suckled up to about 460 to 500 days. Farmers are now experimenting and cows being bred naturally to enhance the longevity of lactation. Something that has been done in places since the 70s. So for longer than 500 days post birth. Obviously this is governed by economics and like all mammals lactation peaks in the first third, but drying a cow off early. Is not good for its health so the vast majority are dried off at 305 to 400 days then a dry period before AI or running with the bull. Longer costs lots more money because of reduced yield over time and that cost needs to be born by the milk price which it isn't really. So same old story... More Welfare means more expensive food and I for one am very definitely a supporter of that. Supermarkets need to charge and pay more and it can be done. Simples. |
