I read that it's the 60th Birthday of Paul Heaton, lead singer with the Beautiful South and Housemartins. Happy Birthday Paul but his voice is like out of tune flatulence forced through a fine sieve.
Who in your opinion are the truly awful but still rather successful singers ? |

This is a good effort Dick but Tom has cornered the market at this sort of nonsense. |

"Gary Glitter, truly cannot sing a note, ugly as sin, did very well til he teamed up with Saville"
I saw Gary Glitter live at Milton Keynes Bowl before all the bad stuff came out.
Whatever his singing was like, he had a stage presence that just won the crowd over. It was a fantastic performance. So sad that certain icons just ruined themselves in lots of different ways. Please don’t misunderstand me; GG was a horrific monster, but he had an undoubted talent. |

"Amy winehouse "
She’s one who I didn’t like at the time of her fame, but I can’t help noticing the pain in her singing now, after we all know the depths of her despair.
I think I’m getting soft in my old age…. |

I dunno. I saw a program and she seemed just a kid obsessed by the greats. She copied them and became huge.
I liked her but maybe she was a bit out of her depth? I don’t do H but I am a borderline alcoholic.
No pain just I like the stuff. But I can’t sing either way. |

Me. I was once singing along to Guns n Roses in the car. The traffic information thing kicked in and I realised I sounded less like Axl Rose and more like Alan Carr on crack.
However if you are talking professional singers being overrated..
Madonna
Bob Dylan
Paul McCartney and John Lennon
Both Gallagher brothers
Shakira (always sounds like she has a cold)
Lou Reed
Bono
Britney Spears
Chris Martin
J-Lo.

"Bob Dylan, Shane MacGowan."
Well said! I'll add Robert Smith (The Cure), Mark E. Smith (The Fall) and Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs).
And I've got albums by the lot of them, including Dylan and MacGowan. For me the voice is entirely unimportant. It's the song and the way it's delivered that interests me. |
