Compared to the 1800's in terms of poverty, no, it's far better.

I think the UK would struggle to fit in a toilet pan. It's kinda weirdly shaped. I'm fairly sure Cornwall would stuff up the U-bend

One for the Politics forum, rather than the more genteel Lounge, I think.

Just my opinion, but I think it has gone down the pan, sent there by the greed and venality of the powerful (I don’t just mean recent governments).

We’re watching its death throes as a political entity, I think. I was never a flag-waver, but I was always very content with its existence. These days I’m “Annibyniaeth Cymru”.

It's all relative, I've been to many countries and they are generally worse than being here.

Obviously there are things that people don't like, but the grass is rarely any greener on the other side of the fence.

At the risk of sounding spoiled, I really had no idea until very recently how much poverty there is in this country. I saw a woman on television last night talking about a charity she'd set up to deliver beds to children who don't have one. She operates in Leeds and this week alone has delivered 46 beds so far and still has more referrals to process. How are there children in this country, one of the richest in the world, who don't have a comfortable and safe place to sleep? It's easy to not realise this is reality for so many when you're lucky to have lived a relatively comfortable (but not rich) life. I wonder what the government are doing about this inequality when it seems like charities are picking up so much of the "slack". Pissing away millions on unfit contracts with their mates. Avoiding tax. Failing to close loopholes. They have no interest in narrowing the gap, do they? It's the children my heart aches for. They have no choice in how they live, they can't unskill or make cut backs or move careers, they're absolutely stuck in that situation.

Your situation in life, mostly financial, will depend on how people answer this question. If something isn't directly effecting you, it doesn't exist in most people's eyes. Personally, I think this country should be and could be better but that's another thread.

I'm of the opinion things are different today than a few years ago.

But, I have a good life. I am in a position to make choices. I can eat what I like, I can go pretty much where I want, I can watch whatever I wish to watch on the TV... many people in many countries don't have the choices I have.

I'm grateful for what I've got, and see the positive.... were a first world country with one of the strongest economies in the world... and too many people take stuff for granted and would rather complain

A lot of problems with the UK seem to be happening to The West in general.

It does also depend on your personal situation, in terms of society and feeling like you belong, relative wealth can be more important than GDP.

All these people complaining about unemployment and poverty need to remember that people complained about the poor house and kids being sent up chimneys but there was full employment of a kind....bring back the 1800s, Britain ruled the waves, Boney was the enemy and the Empire knew who was in charge

Okay in terms of living standards of how said children live- that's individual adults making that choice for their child. Of course bills etc come into it- but not to have the basic necessities. That's an ill informed adult not parenting correctly. You can pick up beds cheap enough /second hand. We are a throw away nation. Secondly- yes the government have been wasteful with money. But the people voted them in. Children and life as a whole has improved. Everyone has rights in this country- which some countries do not have. We expect a lot and more in this country thinking we are entitled to all this just because we are a first world country- maybe think: voting and also what do you have already/ what you perceive as needing is that not a want. Over and out.

One of my many thoughts on this is:

It’s pretty grim. But I mean I don’t long for the ’good old days’ that a) I’m too young to remember and b) were a time that my older family members recall a seemingly worse time in terms of being Black here (and for other POC I know this applies too).

Yes I noticed the UK changing around a young age noticed colour changes, lack of English speaking people, crime increase, police have lack of powers, increased tax, left and right anger, protests, eco people, soft touch law, not free to speak out, homes for people who have never paid a penny in the country but our own get nothing, benefits, List goes on.

If someone asked me where is the best place to live I would say definitely not the UK, go to a proper country who looks after there citizens even Australia has better powers and laws.

This sounds like every rant I see on bookface and other social media but normally from someone in the 50's/60's, blaming all the country's woes on pesky immigrants and foreigners.

The UK has always been a diverse place to live populated by people of many ethnicities.

Is crime on the increase? Probably. I suspect though that the perpetrators aren't just recent arrivals to the UK. Do the police lack powers? It seems that way, but then that's the fault of the government, not the police and who's been in power the last 12 years?

Increased tax? Not really. Certainly not in the right places (corporate) and focussing on tax avoidance which is a far greater issue ad loss of money to the country than benefit fraud.

Not free to speak out? Why not? What's stopping anyone? We live in a country where you actually do have freedom of speech (but not freedom of consequence of course, quite rightly) and the ability to use it online or elsewhere.

And the good old 'our own get nothing' argument. There are people born in this country who've done feck all for their whole lives who get benefits and housing , yet people who want to come here and build a life through work (when they're eventually allowed) are castigated and resented. The housing argument always claims we should look after our homeless first. As if it's either/or. The government could easily do both. There's enough vacant properties in the UK to house every homeless person. The fact is some don't want to be helped - sad, but true.

As for Australia? A decade ago I'd have agreed with you. But ask most Australians if they think they're well looked after by their government and you may be surprised at the replies.

Going down / gone down the pan? Whichever people think, there are clearly positives and negatives. It saddens me the wealth imbalance and poverty, and needs of many, however we are still in a miles better place than so many other nations.

There do seem to be more needs of varying kinds but then our ‘averages’ and demographics often show we have created many of our own problems.

It’s not easy for many, but I think each generation has had challenges and quite a serious number wouldn’t shift generations - many older people say they wouldn’t wish to be in a younger person’s shoes, and I certainly wouldn’t wish to tread in the trenches as of veterans experiences either, much respect to those heroes.

Plenty of challenges but plenty to celebrate - help to do both and we make the world a better place.

Some of what you say rings true but there are societal problems like drug and gang violence which have been made worse by the closure of youth clubs by this government. the youth workers who were often ex-gang members would help to stop kids joining gangs in the first place but like all the tories “ideas”, the removal of funding for these soft remedies was because it was all a bit woke and not about big sticks and being top dog…ie it didn’t make good headlines even though it was cheaper and more effective than “county lines” operations have proven to be! Another win for the old school tie! Btw I am in my fifties and still have a brain and conscience so don’t go all ageist on us!!!

Btw I am in my fifties and still have a brain and conscience so don’t go all ageist on us!!!"

I agree completely.

There's been a major lack of funding for everything from mental health to youth work, replaced by spending on vanity projects such as HS2 and countless billions spunked up the wall on brexit that have put the country in a position that (along with covid) has left it financially impossible for many much needed projects to be supported.

If less focus was placed on making money for big corporates and making the country become more insular, and more focus was put on societal needs such as housing, health and education, then the population could stop fighting each other based on bullshit politics and division promoted by those in power and people could actually work in each others best interests.

Sadly I can't see that happening in my lifetime.

Some people make out that it's all our fault if we don't vote or vote for the wrong party, but I think the whole thing is BS, fact is it makes sod all difference who or if you vote. The housing crisis has lasted through Tory and Labour governments and noone done sod all about it.

It started around 20 years ago about the time when immigration outstripped natural births in terms of population growth, but immigrants don't decide our border polices, we do, so there's equally sod all point blaming them.

The UK is a fantastic country to live in. But it's definitely on the decline. No small part down to misinformed hateful political opinions as demonstrated by this chap.

The ever widening gap between the rich and poor, and people voting consistently against their own interests are taking us in the wrong direction.

Everything seems to be all me,me,me.

this manifests itself in many ways, i travel alot, you dont see litter anywhere else , well in europe, like you do here, selfish driving etc.

Inflation means we're all relatively less well off. The sector I work in has been decimated by the "B" word, so a lot of people I know are really struggling.

The economy is in ruins. The government is only concerned with getting themselves and their friends rich.

The gap between the rich and the poor is widening. More people than ever are using foodbanks, while the governments pals are still avoiding paying tax.

It's still a great country to live in. But we're going in the wrong direction fast.

Not even read the comments.

Don't need to, this is the most unique country that has too many people complaining of there own problems, compared to a lot of other countries your problems are minor.

If you don't like it here then P&O ferries will take you somewhere better.

It's the most vibrant interesting country you could want.

Make the most of what you have,it's going to vanish.

" this is the most unique country."

Genuine question.

Why do you think it’s the most unique? To my mind, of course it’s got stuff going on that’s unique to the UK, but most countries have something unique going on. Why is it the MOST unique country in your view? What’s the UK got that trumps everywhere else?

" It's the most vibrant interesting country you could want."

Why do you think that? What’s more vibrant than say Las Ramblas, or Patagonia, perhaps Berlin? (Or wherever).

What is so much more interesting in the UK that doesn’t have an equally interesting event/place/custom elsewhere?

I appreciate you have a valid opinion, but a lot of people (obviously me!) will disagree with you.

And just for complete disclosure, I did get a different passport and go to live somewhere else, but we used Brittany Ferries, not P&O.

I’m not picking an argument, I’m just keen to understand your viewpoint.

Cheers,

Gbat

Should it not read " has gone down the pan " .

Yeah, I referenced that already. As you put your thoughts onto a discussion thread I thought it would be okay to discuss them. Like as if we were chatting in the pub or something.

Of course you have an opinion! Who doesn't?

I was just hoping that you could explain your opinion to me. Currently I don't like it, but I'm not sure how to lump it. I thought you might even be able to change my view on this. I'm always happy to adapt and grow if I learn something new.

Is it that you WON'T engage in this discussion or you CAN'T actually validate what you said? That's quite common so don't worry.

Thanks anyway and happy fabbing.

Anyone struggling with their sociology essay will be able to write the best one ever using the plethora of good material found in this thread. I am so glad I joined fab to further enlighten myself about the wonderful and weird world I live in. The polarisation of opinion is always what amazes me most, especially when it's based on nothing more than personal prejudices and circumstances rather thsn a true evaluation of the world we collectively live in. There are of course better and worse places to live in therefore what is important is that we find ways to improve things in our society. Especially how we show compassion and provide real support for those in need and volunable people suffering at the moment. Politics often gets in the way of good human behaviour and compassion for one another

Yeah, I guess you wouldn't have anything to support what you'd said. I wasn't surprised.

The places I named were "for instance." (Only one of them is a city by the way).

How do you give an opinion on the whole of the UK when you haven't been to the whole of the UK? Then how do you compare that to (For instance) the whole of Ecuador when you haven't been to the whole of Ecuador?

Not to worry, I guess we'll never have this conversation.

Depends how you look at it. In some ways yes however some of the things that make it crap like housing prices, crap politicians etc are problems occuring in every country. The world in general has gotten greedier and in a big hurry People wise I've never had a problem with our little islands population, a few spoil it for the rest but most people I meet are lovely.

The countryside as well is still some of the most beautiful about and I wouldn't change it for any other
