Are you really intelligent or really confident?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I admire intelligence, I'd like to be extremely so.
I see the struggles that people with little confidence have and wouldn't want to be like that.
On balance I choose confidence but the confidence to read books and learn |

Being intelligent can be a curse. Tend to over think.
Personally I’d choose being very confident. Confidence is like that magic ingredient that you just can’t explain… so yeah. X |

I'll take intelligence over confidence thanks.
I've found confidence evolves over time. I'm a lot more confident now than I was in my twenties. Now I give less of a sh*t about what people think of me. |

Me too but that's mainly because I realised pretty early on that other people rarely think about you, they're mostly thinking about themselves |

Without wanting to come across as arrogant, I have intelligence and intellect in abundance (first degree is physics, master in engineering both from Russel Grp university and fellow of one professional body, chartered member of another 2). The downside that comes with that is it’s sometimes hard to find common ground with people who have different interests or levels of intellectual curiosity. A lot of people with high levels of intelligence also sit somewhere on the ASD.
I think I would rather have confidence and a decent level of intelligence than be super bright and socially akward. |

Life teaches both , if you are confident you can be seen by some as arrogant ( who cares tbh ) if you are intelligent you can be seen by some as a know it all ( who cares tbh ) but if l were to choose one of your options l would choose intelligence because over time it flows into confidence, you feel you are intelligent enough so your confidence grows , you maybe confident but you may never be intelligent enough so for me intelligence |

Confidence is what we struggle with personally but work to improve and soon gain as we get to know people.
Almost like I need to know they are happy with me and my actions to make that move.
Intelligence comes in many forms the trick is using if in a fun witty and to boost the communication with new people.
I could be the next Einstein yet nobody would like me it’s a balance to get noticed.

The common misconception is that brexit was only supported by the ignorant, St George’s flag waving white van men who are neo nazis anyway. It’s easy to mistake an opinion you don’t agree with with a lack of intellectual acumen in the person who holds the opinion you disagree with.
I would have disagreed with my dying breath with a lot of people in recent history but would have accepted and appreciated the precision of their argument even if I had thought their analysis and conclusions were flawed.
Sadly what we have got to is poorly thought out arguments and the shouting down of anyone with whom you have a disagreement to the point of bullying and intimidation masquerading as “confidence” (in the same way we now conflate fear with respect). |

Say I'm intelligent but if I don't have confidence in my work. I may be able to design a new treatment for example, but what use is that intelligence if I haven't the confidence to share that knowledge? And make it into a reality. |

I'm nowhere near as intelligent as I want to be. God damn meeting some absolute world leaders in my field. But I also know I'm more intelligent than average. Of course not. I was referring to when it does. When you try having a rational arguement with people who are just so sure they are right when they cannot present a single fact, you feel like being your head against the nearest brick wall. This sort of confidence is without merit as it's baseless. |

Confidence maybe attractive at first in the same way great packaging design is on a shop shelf. But not every product meets up to promise of the packaging. If it does great. But I'd rather have a quality product within than product that is disappointing after the promise of the packaging. And for me intelligence is something I value.
I would always chose my intelligence and I'm happy being a dark horse. Plus there is something more of value when you meet someone who has taken the time to dig a bit and values what they find beneath the first impressions or social awkwardness. There are of course different types of confidence, some loud, some quiet and you can be confident and intelligent or confident and thick as mince. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
Mr |

I'm high intelligence (STEM, elite game programmer), and pretty well informed of global politics, history, geography, human anthropology and different cultures. Although my confidence defaults to super low until I'm doing something or interacting with people, then I can get very high confidence. Childhood trauma, my parents to put it bluntly are pretty simple folk and 200% wrong & strong, disagreeable, control-freak types. So I'll regress to this childhood state until I'm interacting with other 'normal' humans that remind me that I'm not a loser - Lockdown was an eye-opener for me and all of my siblings... Therapy
Confidence will motivate you to do things, learn new things and socialise well. Too much confidence will make you complacent and unable to learn from others as you believe you're always right. Too little and you lose your sense of self worth. The extreme ends will kill you. I guess the same applies to intelligence.
It's a tough one. I would be tempted to take confidence, but then it's hard to imagine how difficult life would be if the majority of my interactions were with people smarter than me. I'd probably just p*** off everyone. |

"You can only be one. Which would you rather be?
Please show your working out or full marks cannot be awarded.
Nb: cheaters will be spanked today. "
I'd choose neither, because both are derivatives of the trait I would choose, which is independence.
My "working out" is as follows.
Independence nurtures the individual and propels them to find solutions to achieve their aims and goals, fostering self-reliance. This in turn grows their level of confidence. The overall process is an educative one and it's not unreasonable to expect new skills and knowledge will be learned in the process. Whether you define that as "intelligence" is another matter, because the way we classify intelligence is extremely subjective in the formal sense.
I do believe however that independence is at the heart of "intelligence" and "confidence".
Apex creatures possess all 3 traits, but I conjecture that "independence" or self-reliance is the strongest trait, which informs the other two.
In the case of humans, it's "persistence hunting" which makes us excel, and whilst intelligence and confidence are incredibly important in that endeavour, persistence needs independence and self-reliance and self-regulation to support it.
Gosh, what a fascinating discussion.

Intelligent. Over think things. See other people's point of view. Extrapolate their sexual preferences and anticipate that they won't include me. Regard myself as either (a) lacking the confidence to push myself forwards sexually when I know I won't be successful, or (b) being realistic in my expectations that the women I'm attracted to won't be attracted to me.

Intelligence every time. Confidence may get more instant success but that success is basically a product of good advertising. I'd much prefer to be with someone who has done a little _igging and wants to be with me because of my mind rather than sucked in by a superficial facade.
Obviously that opinion is based on viewing the two as extremes and mutually exclusive (I think in the spirt of the thread). But the reality we can be various mixtures of both. |

Intelligence is taught
Confidence is only something you can develop.
In my line of work I would be considered rather intelligent and I think confidence when it comes to certain things comes with intelligence.
Something I wouldn’t have a clue about so naturally not as confident but you learn should you want too.
Very fine like between confident and arrogance. Better to appear less confident then arrogant.

"You can only be one. Which would you rather be?
Please show your working out or full marks cannot be awarded.
Nb: cheaters will be spanked today.

Indeed a fascinating discussion, and a great post! |

Im confident way beyond my looks - somehow i get by that way - and intelligence? Probably average - i learn what i need to know and have the capacity to learn - i think confidence has got me further in life than intelligence so on balance I’d opt for confidence over intelligence - too much of either can be a bad thing I think. |
