I generally love military history, ranging from antiquity through to modern day. Anything more specific about the Vikings?

To be fair, a lot of people have some Norse blood in them, I probably do. My mothers maiden name is a Norse surname so it figures

Hmmm, I thought the Svea raided more to the east than west. Still, it's interesting.

My dad is Swedish, so he used to talk to me a lot about Vikings and their history. Just always fascinated me, especially when they raided England/Mercia.

Does anyone remember the BBC 2 series, War Walks, as hosted by Professor Richard Holmes?

I so wish they’d bring that back as it was both educational and highly entertaining; he certainly wasn’t afraid to have a practical go with historical weaponry and tactics!

About the Black Hawk Down incident, interesting what was changed from what happened in real life compared to the film

Voices of the Past youtube channel has alot of reading of sources from different times aswell that are really interesting. Memoirs from Napoleonic soldiers ect

Interesting to think that Henry was running for Calais after losing 2/3 of his army to the siege of Caen. The french thought they would steamroll the english but got their asses handed to them under similar conditions as the battle of Crècy

Quite some time back I’m afraid; probably the late 1990’s.

I know it is still available on DVD and possibly some streaming platforms however and I would wholeheartedly recommend seeking it out to all history enthusiasts.

Basically, Professor Holmes would visit the site of historical battles and in his own highly infectious and animated style, both describe the events in detail whilst demonstrating various aspects of the warfare style.

It was hugely entertaining and highly informative

In the west.

There are a few battle sites around here, 5 to about 20 miles away. Ranging from the Norsemen/Danes to the Wars of Independence.

Wallace and The Bruce are from these parts and the local landowner sent 200 to Culloden Moor which was a few hundred years later.

Yes well, the English dominance of the Scottish isnt a point of pride really. What is interesting is that technically England was a junior partner to Scotland in a personal union, yet the Stuart's chose to rule from London, presumably because England was wealthier.

Being witness to the Battle of the Hydaspes where Alexander of Macedonia army fought against King Porus would have been interested.

There are to many interesting moments from history. The Sea People that apparently wiped out most of ancients lands of eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, Syria, Greece etc. And there's still very little known about who these people where with multiple theories.

Sorry to go off topic, and my next event is less blood thirsty in of itself. Being present to hear the key meetings that lead to the East-West schism within Christendom would be fascinating.

It's hard to even imagine the immensity of that decision at the time!

"The Battle of Edington 878

Is that a Saxon/Viking battle?

Yes, Alfred the Great handing it to Guthrum. The first season of The Last Kingdom is loosely based on this

Yeah that figures. I've not long watched the last kingdom, the books are better mind, I love a bit of Bernard Cornwell. Sharpe is one of my all time favourite book series.

I did enjoy his Grail Quest series and the Warlord Chronicles

I believe these are some of the writings that Sharpe series was based on. I never was really into it that much

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33zAdhrhdJA

Ahh cheers! He also did a series of books on the american civil war but I struggled to get into them."

I'm a big fan of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell. The American civil war books are good, but I agree - they are a struggle to begin with but worth the trouble. Another good author of the Romans in Britain era is Simon Scarrow.

I've not heard of him but I'll look him up. For some good non-fiction I recommend James Hornefischer's books on naval action in the Pacific theatre. Neptune's Inferno was most riveting.

I'm with you with the books..

I don't have a specific battle but I love historical facts full stop. Not a battle but I am very much into the findings from life in Pompei and herculaneum and its destruction. Been many times now x

Our favourite battles are Tewkesbury 1471 & Bosworth 1485

We take part in the reenactments of them both every year.

I'd love to visit, I just feel that Naples will be a little too warm for my liking. It's amazing that they have found petrified brains in Pompei, what a way to go lol

Not a battle but a complete war..I am hooked on reading/listening about Nazi Germany and still wondering how pretty much an entire nation can be taken in so easily.

They weren't though, they took in enough people to take complete control. But by that point they were kind of stuck with it. I mean really parallels can be drawn with current british politics when you think of it.

It can be expensive, if - like us - you have a nice medieval tent and full plate armour, but there are cheaper options.

I like the one where they sat down with a cup of tea and both sides talked it through. And then went, "nah, let's just leave it."

I am fascinated by the Battle of the Bulge. I fight it every day. Some days I am on the losing side having eaten too much cake, but if I manage to get out for a run, I feel I have advanced a little.

Yes well, you will be hard put to find an occurrence in which this happened.

"Does anyone remember the BBC 2 series, War Walks, as hosted by Professor Richard Holmes?

I so wish they’d bring that back as it was both educational and highly entertaining; he certainly wasn’t afraid to have a practical go with historical weaponry and tactics! "

Yes! Far too young to remember it but he did a WW1 battlefields programme too

You want me to give you an example of a time when two countries/empires have found a peaceful resolution through dialogue?
