Yeah, using they and them in the right way and context is fine and the way we are taught to speak, using they and them is not only hard to remember and fit to the right situation, bearing in mind they are two of many many different pronouns, it is also downright rude in most situations to use… it also sounds like you weren’t taught how to speak properly “this is Barbara, them works in our it department”. There’s a proper way to structure sentences and non gendered pronouns aren’t part of that.
Oops. Speaking of proper, you’d be better using “they” rather than them. I’m assuming you wouldn’t say “this is Barbara, her works in our IT department”. "No, but there is a proper gendered word that makes that sentence easy to put together. She. You could use they quite a bit easier in that sentence, but, people usually process the information to refer to someone quite visually, which is why non gendered pronouns are a sticky situation, especially in a place where accidental misgendering can be punished, because anyone can slip and accidentally use a gendered pronoun to refer to a gender fluid person in the wrong moment and be accused of doing it purposefully. | |||
