So this afternoon I watched, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension ( 1984) and now watching Strange Days (1995) normally a film I watch on NYE.

I think both are cult films.

What are your cult film recommendations ?

Or even films that tanked at the box office but you love ?

Streets of Fire is another for me.

Big Trouble to me, is his best role. The reason there’s plenty of actors who could play his role in The Thing or Escape from New York.

But he totally owns the character of Jack Burton, comedic and heroic definitely hard to play well.

Most of my teenage life I was embarrassed about wanting to dress up in women’s clothes, Then one day a friend asked if I fancied a late night cinema visit, yes a midnight showing of a film.

Rocky Horror not only told me that being a Transvestite was Ok, but it could be empowering as well. Tim Curry looked great, Richard O Brien wrote a great story and suddenly I was accepted and accepting of myself.

Love this film and than it for my mental strength

Can’t believe only one mention for Tremors so far! An absolute classic!!

Kevin Bacon at his best!

Although Footloose should be in the conversation too!

Kurt Russell best role or was it in ‘The Thing’ or even ‘Escape from New York’ ? "

No, I think “Big Trouble” is his best, a really great movie that deserves cult status.

Now give me s mo and I shall think of some obscure movie that I love and nobody really watches

A bit further up, you’ll see I agree with you. Jack Burton could’ve been a really two dimensional character but Kurt makes him into a real person. Full of bravado and idiosyncrasies a guy we really feel for. He’s not perfect but he’s trying really hard to do the right thing,

I absolutely love his character

Cinema Paradiso is in my top ten films, actually top five. But I wouldn’t call it a cult film as it won an Oscar. Cyrano de Bergerac is also a classic.

However Layer cake is a great film especially as it helped Daniel get the Bond part. Recently rewatched RocknRolla which is a lot better than I expected.

I would say Come and See should be a cult classic

Extremely heavy hitting war film about what the Germans got up to in Belarus during WW2. Not for the faint of heart though

Yes, cinema Paradiso and cyrano … more classic than cult but because they are both foreign films and I have seen classics like Cool Hand Luke on the list I thought I would try and slip them in!!

What about “The Quiet Man”?

I think more classic than cult , but always worth a mention

Yes I’ve seen this film. It’s absolutely horrific.

It’s certainly on a list of films you should see, but only if you can live with those images (of true events) afterwards.

Definitely ‘classic’ especially that fight scene.

But due to it being a great film (admittedly some issues with the way women are treated) it can’t be a cult film

But you could also argue, that the cult nature of the hierarchy and the religious zeal, in itself makes the devils a cult film. The parallels between the doctrine of the church, and the bastardisation of it, are on par with more recent cults like Manson etc. The whole film is both unforgettable and challenging, from the nature of its subject, to the film score, and the whole roller coaster of emotions you’re taken on.

But I think part of the reason that many haven’t heard of it (It was one of the film I studied on censorship) and so for some it doesn’t have that cult status, is because of its controversy and the censorship that surrounds it, even to this day.

A pity, as Oliver Reed was phenomenal in it xx

This is, of course, subjective, and what may be a film that some see as a cult film, may not be by others- case in point, The Devils. I see it’s social commentary, on the abuse of power, and the censorship following its release (in fact, even before then) as making it a cult film.

Others don’t. But it’s been great reading all the recommendations of films as cult films, and some to look out for xx

Maybe it’s because I’ve seen it several times that I see it as a classic. But as an avid film lover maybe I forget that others may not have even heard of it.

Ken Russell was a great film maker and to me this will always be a great film. That’s why I think it’s a classic and not cult but I won’t argue if it goes into cult status.

Now Ken Russell Tommy by the Who, for me that’s a cult film of his.
