Somewhere In The Ether…

Much of the modern, commercial chart stuff today disheartens me.

I accept the intrinsic principle of the generational gap e.g, ‘Music was better in my day!’ *simultaneously waving fist aloft like a true old codger* but so much I have listened to in passing, sounds completely vapid (state of the art, digital production values aside).

Before anyone shits their pants in some sanctimonious, huffy and hypersensitive panic, I’m not saying that ALL modern music is bad.

It probably just requires one to look a bit deeper, outside of the commercial charts for a start.

The beatles had a short time frame where they were actually good. And that was when they were essentially making American blues/ rock more palatable to a white british audience. Then they started falling out, John and Paul's egos went off the scale. They sidelined George (a brilliant songwriter), then they all got off their tits and started singing about walruses and submarines and shit.

The Beatles.

Some say they're the greatest band of all time. I cannot believe that music peaked in the late 60s when so many new genres, some of them not even possible then, have appeared since.

I'm not going to deny that they were popular and influential but I find most of their songs to be mediocre. There are some truly great songs but also some that I can't stand listening to. I don't like the production of their albums either, preferring to listen to covers of their best songs. They often work pretty well in different genres.

Adele, could be an unpopular choice but having seen her new release being promoted on the the BBC news site today, all I can say is what a load of self pretentious shite.

Nile Rodgers, its the same chords and tone over a beat. He turns up on every tv show and is referred to as a legend. Correct his skills are a myth.

"Ed Sheeran. Analysis of his entire output shows he's sung just 17 notes.

He's actually an accomplished musician who has hit on a formula that sells truck loads but isn't at all excii, technically proficient or inspiring.

As many point out in their profiles quantity doesn't mean quality... Good luck to him but with one exception I hate his output which is pretty much derivative of others work. Clearly many people like his stuff though. Much like Adele. like or dislike Adele there’s no doubting that the girl has a fantastic voice "

Disagree with you there... She's loud, flat and loses tone.. Lots like her and that's fair play. But not for me.. There are better voices down the pub on a Friday night.

"Agree with a lot of what's been said.

The beatles, Robbie Williams, pink Floyd, pink, Sam Smith, led Zeppelin, rod Stewart. Ed Sheeran.

I'd add Fleetwood Mac, Beyonce,

I would distinguish between Fleetwood Mac ( soft rock papp ) and the original 5 piece blues rock band that Peter Green founded "

Ah the late, lamented Green god.

Though the Buckingham/Nick's version of the band gave us Tusk. And don't discount the Bob Welch years.

Oasis... totally derivative and not especially exciting. They literally did nothing new, ever.

I went to buy a guitar and the guy in the shop said ooohhh I’ve got a 1976 Gibson Explorer the holy grail of Explorers - you can sound like the Edge with that. I said why the fuck would I want to sound like that ? He can barely play the thing. not what he was expecting i think .

It seems like every singer ever recorded has been pilloried. But most of us agree on Oasis being the nadir of modern music.

It would be interesting if folks had not only criticised but said who they thought was good.

For me Oasis and Pretenders were awful singers whereas Pink, George Michael, Stefani Germanotta and Randy Crawford were/are great; to name but a few.

Agreed. I always think they are the band for townies who went a bit alt in their 30s and trying to be cool. There music is so boring and produced so samey. I was a big fan of Bleach, still one of my fave albums, so am probably just bitter.

I did say this yesterday but was shot down in flames! I mean they created the songs "We all live in a yellow submarine", " I am the walrus" and wrote the fantastic lyrics "she loves you yeah yeah yeah, she loves you yeah yeah yeah, she loves you yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah" what is there not to like?
