Scientists have discovered that electromagnetic fields around underwater cables for windfarms is affecting our brown crabs. It seems to make them docile and disrupt the chemical balance in their bodies which we in turn will eat. They are meddling with things they don't know. This could turn them into Frankenstein crabs. And if this affects crabs then what about those living near high voltage substations and overhead cables. And yes. This is all over the news |

I'd love to see the peer reviewed scientific paper of this and if the results are repeatable.

Interesting!
Although it reads like its hormonal changes possibly as a response to stress given crabs are magneto sensitive. The latter bit may reassure those living next to lines.
There is nothing there about frankencrabs. But they have said more research could be done on crab eggs .... |

Is this just crabs, or could it affect other similar sea creatures?
It would be a bit odd if the human race was exterminated by armies of mutant crustaceans emerging from the oceans to exact terrible revenge for us eating alot of their mates.
Christmas would have to be cancelled and everything.

Undersea power cables are used all over the world and have been for a long time. There is no intrinsically different about electricity from wind farms.
Electromagnetic fields sounds like a scary phrase until you realise it basically means anything to do with light, radio, etc. The entire universe is one soaked in electromagnetic fields. It is what makes life possible. |

My guess it's either

- communism/socialism (they don't know the difference)
- feminism
- multiculturalism
It's always at least one of the 4, or all 4 for some nutters

It's important that we take note and take steps that helps to reduce the impact on the rest of the world that we share the planet with.
The UK is one of the worst countries for degradation of biodiversity in the world, since the start of the industrial revolution. If we have not yet learned the lessons from such a sorry state of affairs, it's beyond tragic.

The official death toll from Chernobyl is ridiculously low, something like 30 people on the initial explosion rising to 60 or so shortly after. There are a bunch of other estimates that range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of deaths in the years that followed but the official numbers stick to the known deaths.
I suspect the posters stat measures all deaths that have occurred during construction and work on renewables against nuclear accidents. Given that we've been constructing hydroelectric plants for a very long time and that there used to be very poor worker safety on such projects this isn't really a fair comparison or an accurate one. This is compounded by the fact that renewables account for 7 times as much generating capacity world wide as nuclear.
If you only took figures for both from the time nuclear power generation began, controlled for total supplied power and included construction accidents on nuclear sites I suspect the figures would look very different even without arguing the true cost of Chernobyl.

I think the report says that underwater electric cables from windfarms produce an electromagnetic field that not only affects the behaviour of brown crabs but changes their physical composition.
My take is that many of us eat crab. What long term effect could there be on the crab population and those creatures that feed on them including humans. What other species are affected?
Could this lead to genetic mutations in crab and if so then what are the implications? |

It is a valid concern as to what is making it into our food chain and what effect that will have in the long term, just need to take a look at increases in obesity, inflammatory diseases, mental illness and the like.
However if you’re going to dive down that rabbit hole I’d say offshore wind farms and electric crabs are the least of anyone’s concerns when we get into pesticides, steroids, antibiotics, hormones and gm stuff being purposely added. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but if you have a penchant for foil hats and outrage there’s certainly a lot to work with. |

But true.
I went to the beach over the weekend as was shocked to see crabs around 4m across.
One of them came out the water, ate a kid and then decided to choose ice cream for dessert, not just a 99 but the whole ice cream van.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
Wetherspoons wouldn't allow me back in for some strange reason.
It could be natural evolution.
As we become greener, the sea life we have eaten for millennia has decided it's their turn and decided that the old child or pensioner could become one of their 5 a day.
All true, read it on the interweb thingy. |

If allegedly it will turn regular brown crabs into “Frankenstein crabs” imagine how interesting that would be or how large they would grow? I could picture it right now the food companies/markets turning it into a business opportunity and selling them for a hefty price to people who like eating crab meat |

Dunno why you find this so hard to believe Granny, it really is pretty common. If you Google "bird crashed into window" then click images you can even see photos of the impertinent they leave on the glass (and lots of pics of birds with broken necks)
Strange as this idea may be, the fact you haven't heard of something in your long life doesn't make it false

"Scientists have discovered that electromagnetic fields around underwater cables for windfarms is affecting our brown crabs. It seems to make them docile and disrupt the chemical balance in their bodies which we in turn will eat. They are meddling with things they don't know. This could turn them into Frankenstein crabs. And if this affects crabs then what about those living near high voltage substations and overhead cables. And yes. This is all over the news "
There has been studies about sub stations and overhead cables, nothing too much to worry about except increased risk of cancer and other issues. I am sure there is a report out, that says it is perfectly ok to live near them as well. |

"Well, I make green mushrooms when I fart they are dangerous. They are definitely some kind of power."
Yes, a combination of wind power and nuclear energy that it. |

"These crabs could be the cancer scare of the future..
If they build a wind farm off Cromer then no chance I will eat those crab...."
I have often wondered what crab meat tastes like, who knows if they become freakishly large it could even have a radioactive zing taste to it? |

Is anyone actually more concerned about this theoretical risk, than all the well known risks from manmade pollution? Petrochemical pollutants, and micro plastics are in the fish and shellfish you already eat and are known carcinogens. Are you up in arms about hormones and antibiotics in your meat and chicken, what about the pesticides in your fruit and veg....... Overall study after study for the last 20 years have shown that wind farms are a hugely beneficial to the health and diversity of local marine environments. They act as artificial reef habitats and are quantifiably a net benifit to the local and greater environment! |

Good grief- I've just taken a walk along the beach where I live & walked past the wind farm just off shore- if I had known there were super charged mutant crabs clamouring for blood just a short distance from the shore, I'd have taken a frying pan with me, just in case I had to beat back a rampaging hoard!!

"To be fair, more people have died as a direct result of accidents with renewal energy generation than in nuclear power accidents....
Think that one over."
I thought about it..... Then I thought "that sounds like bullshit"..... So I looked it up.... Turns out it is complete bullshit!
Are you just trolling, and inventing lies, or did you just not bother to do any research, before spreading your misinformation? |

That sounds like the plot to some sort of sci fi horror novel |

Someone already mentioned it but you should read Guy N. Smith’s Crab series. Great 70s/80s trashy horror. I believe Garth “I know authors that use subtext and they’re all cowards!” Merenghi is an homage to him in part. |

The point here is that these underwater electric cables from windfarms are causing very visible effects on the brown crab population and even their internal structure and balance of chemicals is being noted. It's true that these windfarms create 'artifial reefs' but what impact will these electromagnetic fields have on the small reef creatures and those predators that prey on them. There are deeper issues here than meet the eye |

But we are quite possibly doing this with battery hens, pumped up cows and the like. It reads like em causes stress changes in hormones .... As, I would imagine, does being cages up or having your calves taken ... |

How big is an elctromagnetic field I wonder. Can the crabs move away from it if they really didnt like it. (Showing my ignorance on marine life) Do the benefits to the crab outweigh the stresses. But like country folk who live in the town because they love easy access to theatre or pubs. They put up with the stress for benefits when they could just move away? |
