I love foreign language films.
Deriving a glimpse into other cultures, differing ways of life and even the observation of the architectural styles all prove absolutely fascinating for me.
So, fellow fans, list me some of your faves if you’d be so kind |

Some superb choices good folks
I especially love the works of Federico Fellini and Werner Herzog but also can’t resist so many contemporary foreign films.
La Haine for instance, which has been mentioned by a few of you is a true, gritty modern classic |

Love to see many of you enjoy the Mexican Trinity in film directing (Del Toro, Cuarón and González Iñarritu... )
Amores Perros is really good. One of González Iñarrutu’s initial works before he went international. Highly recommended. |

For vintage- Luis Buñuel was the Pedro Almodovar of the ‘60s in Spain. He has many surreal films, but my favourite is El Angel Exterminador. Worth a watch! It kind of reminds me the last couple of years we’ve had... |

I see with great sadness that no one has mentioned any of the masterpieces as bequeathed unto us by the late, incredibly prolific Spanish director, Mr Jesus Franco…
(You may be correct in detecting a semblance of sarcasm in the above sentence…) |

Das Boot and Downfall are both superb German war films.
Pretty much and Studio Ghibli film, but particularly The Wind Rises and Grave of the Fireflies. That last one is a beautiful film but needs tissues because it is such a tragic film. |

Spirited Away. Top film. Animation produces so many classics. I just wish they weren’t turned into “live”. |

I recent watched Wadjda, the first full length movie shot in Saudi and first movie by a female Saudi director.
Very brave film about a young girl who wants to ride a bicycle but is discouraged being a girl, tackling issues and poking fun at Saudi culture and beautifully shot |

Ah, that's a brilliant film. Lots of humour among the social commentary. |

That was the first of her films I saw, on DVD. Not all her films are easily available here unfortunately. |

If you like this , you might like Samson and Delilah, 2009 Australian film. Barely any dialogue and shot in the desert SW of Alice springs , we visited the area and stayed a couple of weeks |

can't believe I didn't put "goodbye lenin" in my list.
as someone who lived in Berlin when the wall came down it maybe has more appeal to me.
has Daniel Bruhl in it who later was in Inglorious Bastards and Winter Soldier. |

Probably easier to go by directors than individual films:
Claude Chabrol's satires on the bourgeoisie are reliably sharp and entertaining
As others have said, Almodovar is also good value and Dolor y Gloria was fantastic with an excellent performance by Antonio Banderas.
Francois Ozon and Michael Haneke are another couple of filmmakers working in French whose work is top notch.
And if anyone fancies seeing Emmanuelle Béart in the buff for the best part of 2 hours (and frankly why wouldn't you), la belle noiseuse is a must |
