"I really struggle to understand how people get so worked up about this"
How would you feel if the government said right we are going to put down all people with covid 19 ?
Say you or one of your family had it ? |

it has been in trials for many years but the relevant authorities seem to be stuck in the 1950s

"WTH is a pushmepullme?"
Dr Doolittle had a pushmepullyou which looked remarkably like a twin headed (one at each end) alpaca/llama
Geronimo has had 2 tests and failed both. He has however been allowed to live for a further 4 years so somewhere along the line some officious bumble really has failed their jobsworth title. That said its failed, it should be destroyed |

TB is deadly to livestock and humans.
Quote from DW's website
Tuberculosis kills more people than any other infectious disease, according to information shared by the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday.
Around 1.5 million people died from the bacterial infection in 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported, bringing attention to World Tuberculosis Day on March 24.
Approximately 10 million people are infected with tuberculosis every year, the WHO said on its website. Only a small portion of global cases receive the necessary life-saving medicine.
Over 4,000 people die of tuberculosis every day.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the current coronavirus pandemic demonstrates how vulnerable patients with lung conditions or weakened immune systems are to the new outbreak. Tuberculosis is a disease affecting primarily the lungs.
"For millions of people with tuberculosis, the coronavirus represents a significant danger because their lungs are already weakened by tuberculosis, their general health is low due poverty, and they don’t have access to adequate healthcare," Burkard Kömm, director of the agency German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief (DAHW) told German news agency EPD.

In Asia and Africa, it is tuberculosis patients who are most likely to be killed by the coronavirus.
Tuberculosis can be cured if treated over six months with a cocktail of four different antibiotics, DAWH said. However, many patients end their treatment early or develop a resistance to the medication that complicates and prolongs treatment. A lack of medicine is a common reason why patients end their treatment early, DAWH said.
Is it worth it for the sake of one animal? Just think where corona virus came from: one animal! We don't need another plague.

"It may not be the most important story in the world but why are some people finding this amusing.
Baffling "
Because the response to it is absurdly disproportionate to the issue. To be clear, I don't find an alpaca being put down amusing, I find someone going all the way to the high court to try and save an alpaca with bovine TB highly amusing |

And if it did I'd be the first to say it has to be put down but some clearly haven't looked into the story . These tests were done 4 years ago . Alpacas never live more than a couple of months after contracting TB , he's lived happily and healthily for 4 years since and infected nothing else .
All the owner is asking for is a new test and I don't see why that can't be granted under the circumstances |

This is not true about only living a few months. Like Covid there is a difference between bring a carrier and being symptomatic. I had an alpaca farm for 9 years. During that time became friends and co-campaigner with a lady that caught TB from one of her alpacas. I left the farm 7 years ago when the British Alpaca Society we're trying to find a better TB test than existing comparison test. This is because it has a specificity of just 20% so there is an 80% chance of a false positive. This is why when I first read this story I disagreed with the judgement. However further reading shows both tests were antigen tests with just 0.34% false positives per test.
Unfortunately this means for the protection from spreading it has to be culled. |

It’s 20 years since foot and mouth disease spread across the north west countless farmers lost their livestock and livelihoods.
The law is the law and it had just been killed 4 years ago the owner wouldn’t have lived in hope for so long.
But she’s had 4 more years with it longer than she should have.
People’s pets die every day, it’s sad but life goes on.
There’s so much going on in world right now perhaps the news could focus on important things that impact the wider community and not just one pet owner |

If they kept kill badgers that is the main cause of TB
But some goody goody had to stop that
So the alpaca has to be killed instead
