Do you ever find yourself in group situations, either in real life or Zoom (but especially Zoom) where you struggle to get into the conversation? And you just wonder how everyone else is finding their cue to jump in and you eventually get annoyed so you cut over someone else and then feel bad? And by the time there's a natural gap the conversation has already moved on to another topic, but you actually had something really relevant to contribute?

Asking for a friend...

Bit like on forums here. Think of adding to thread. Work out what to write. Then see someone else has already posted your thoughts

Case point! (Was just in the process of typing the exact same)

Dont feel bad though OP - your voice is every bit as important as everyone elses!

Yeah, I've got 2 mates that come up to my gaff for a couple of beers sometimes, when they get on a roll, even a chainsaw couldn't cut through their conversation

That happens to me quite a lot. A thread could have no comments since the last post for half an hour, or even a couple of hours, then I get gazumped by a minute or so while I'm typing my reply

YESSS I know friends like these too, especially when we go out to restaurants. I'm like "okay I'll just be here quietly eating my pasta if anyone needs me..."

Don’t feel bad, sometimes conversations aren’t inclusive and people don’t notice that you haven’t spoken for ages.

Part of being sociable is noticing these things so everyone can contribute what they’re comfortable with. But sometimes it just doesn’t happen - not a reflection on you

Getting a word in edgewise, like “fish slice”?

surrounded by twinkly lights

I avoid fast paced conversations as I can never keep up, text or vocal I tend to tune out and get distracted by something else

I don't do many group calls outside work. It's normally max of three of us, so it's easy to chip in.

There's one particular guy I work with who doesn't appear to need to breathe though. He talks really loudly and constantly, and will take up an entire 2 hour meeting.

Wouldn't mind, he talks complete bollocks most of the time.

Got so bad in a meeting yesterday one of the managers put him on mute, pretended he'd finished whatever he was rambling on about and asked someone else to take the floor instead.

Yes, this is me in a lot of group conversations and social situations, especially with groups of people I don’t know. One of the reasons I’ve been nervous about going to a club, but I will pluck up the courage soon, haha

If I really want or have something to say I'd fight my way in and just say it but generally I'm happy to just sit back.

I'm happy enough to watch and listen - great way to learn about others without giving too much of yourself away
