For those nervously waiting exams results today, don’t worry about a thing, I failed every exam I ever took and now look at me,I own a yurt and hammock outright, a remote controlled 12’ flat screen TV, a Casio keyboard, complete with bossanova beats and a 2002 Ford Focus parked on a gravel drive, plus a fun loving divorcee who tickles my plums every Thursday evening. Dreams don’t need degrees! |

People need to think of formal education as an end in itself rather than a means to an end. A levels are a chance to study something interesting and develop critical thinking as well as broaden your knowledge of science art and humanities. Formal study focuses the mind and deepens the learning. Telling kids its all about jobs shifts the focus and narrows it. Life is a winding path - dont worry about career so much at 16 or 18 unless you are hell bent on a particular path that needs a definite set of quals such as being a doctor. |

I’m not talking about Clarkson, I’m talking about me, as I look over all I own and wonder how I got here, sheer bloody mindedness got me here and hard graft, you don’t need to be educated to make it big time, I’m living proof of that. |

It all depends, there are a number of variables at play here.
Probably the most important being, what is success?
We probably all have a slightly different idea of this, some very different.
It also depends where you are in your life, and the path you are choosing to take.
One could be a very successful poet, without ever selling or performing a poem. The measurement is all your own.
Similarly, someone could have much material wealth, but have failed at every relationship they have ever had. Ending up lonely and miserable (though rich). Is that success? |

Sure, some people like to learn stuff, but it wasn’t for me, all that talking and reading, what can I say I’ve always been a dreamer, the teachers knew I was a bit of a maverick, they knew they had to set me free. |

I'm dyslexic as and I failed my A levels big time. But I had to go to uni to do the job I wanted to do. I did it the long and hard way, but I did manage it and have a PhD to my name.
So to any parents with kids who didn't get the results they wanted or needed. You can still get there it just might take more time |

Nope. But it helps depending on your career aspirations and goals.
I’m only just starting uni now at 29 (almost 30) because to do the profession I want I need to be educated but there’s plenty of work and skilled jobs that don’t require academia. |

not sure i like the push for kids to go to uni, we need skilled workers,, when i was running a race team we had students from a motorsport uni come along, they new nothing, most of them didnt last a weekend, sucsess is about hard work, not degrees. I used to run a multi million pound company i started, lost most of it in devorce, but thats another story lol
but never felt i was missing out by leaving school early aged 15, i was earning money and owned a house before most of my friends had even finished education, different strokes for different folks tho, we will always need academics, my brother went to uni, then post grad, dont think he was earning before he was nearly 30, he does ok now and loves his job, but he had alot of catching up to do. And dont forget we cant all be academic, we still need people to keep the world turning |

I sent the same fella to get a barrow of blinding, told him to ask the digger driver to fill it for speed. Had the digger driver forewarned. One bucket full from a 25ton excavator will basically bury said wheelbarrow. |

I think there is an obssession in soceity to get people to attend higher education. I'm grateful for skilled architects, doctors etc. but you don't have to impose that on everyone.
I came from a family of doctors & scientists and it was just expected of me to go, despite it being not what i wanted to do..
Also if you speak to some foreign students the fees they pay are astromical ..the cynic in me sees it as mainly a money making scheme in those circumstances. I was talking to an Indian guy who was doing a phd recently & he said t was first time in his life at age 27 that he had to share a bathroom (in his accomodation he was staying.). The fees they are paying can only be really be covered, in the short term, if you very wealthy parents. |

4 - English language, Chemistry, Biology, General studies.
and a Chemistry Degree
Most useful knowledge, skills i have have been ones that I have sought out myself though, not through any formal education. |

A levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. A degree in Physics and a post grad qualification.
I still think the most important qualification I have is my driving license. |

In response to the original question I’m glad that there are exams required to do certain jobs. I wouldn’t want to go into surgery with someone that hadn’t demonstrated competence. Or in a plane where the pilot is just winging it (pun intended). |

I was expelled at 15 and went to university at 25 as a mature student. The whole focus on A levels baffles me. |

It’s a joke and even for us EU/UK students. My fees are £9250 a year. It’s astronomical really. That’s just the tuition etc. granted we can get loans but still that’s a lot of debt on young shoulders. Education should be free or at the very least affordable. |

I got decent GCSE's and did A-Levels in Maths, Physics, Computing and Woodwork where I got a C, 2 D's and a U.
On the other hand my sister aced law school and is now a solicitor of some type.
Last year I earned 20 grand more than her and when I opted for an apprenticeship (rather than to resit my A Levels to go to uni) I was seen as a failure 
There are jobs which need a degree and that's great. I absolutely want some who knows what they're doing to deal with me in A&E. BUT I also think a number of courses are pure money makers where you could learn better by training on the job.
University has it's place but I do think there's a distinct lack of common sense in workplaces nowadays so either the approach universities take needs to change OR less emphasis needs to be put on it for certain careers. |

I agree that nowadays degrees are less important, there are so many varied pathways to get into different careers. However, some jobs require them - if you want to be a doctor, you need one. And to be honest, I wouldn't visit a doctor who hadn't studied medicine |

I genuinely didn't have any education, maybe a year and halfish of high school, so you can only imagine my results. I'm sure people on here have noticed I'm not the brightest crayon in the box. But gosh, there's more to life than doing well on an exam. And you're never too old to try again if you fail.  so don't ever give up on yourself. |

If we are talking here about defining success, many people would base this on money and possessions but I think being content with what you have in life no matter what it may be is a success which many people with plenty of money and possessions will never achieve. |

I've three and they've been of zero use as I left education straight afterwards. On reflection I should have left after GCSE.
I would have like to have done that, but there would have been uproar.
To any parents reading this thread, education is good, but don't force your kids down a path they don't want to go down. Theyll turn into a cynical fu**er like me.
My parents and grandmother pushed the further education envelope. I won't say they forced me into it but they certainly urged me in that direction.
In their time it would have guaranteed, (almost) a pretty stable & well paying job.
Times change.."
That's a valid point and in their head it was a good path for me to be on. |

I didn’t get a degree and I’ve done pretty well! I am doing a degree in my chosen field now but I’d already progressed far in my career prior to starting my degree! |

I have been to many job interviews only to be told I was far too qualified (if that's such a thing?)
In the last few years I went & did an L3 in Art/Fine Art at college. Yes, it's another qualification in a long line. However, I gained a lot from being a mature student. I've picked up new skills & interests that I had not previously realised were possible or even existed.
Prior to that I have a HND in Business Studies. I was a mature student when I went and did this!
Most Artists don't have a background in business so, I think it will stand me in good stead as I am more aware of the business side of art. Most artist's are not! I wasn't taught it.... Artists learn it the hard way!
So, answering the question:-
Yes, some jobs need you to be qualified & proof of them on the wall to show a level of competence & professionalism to the public.
Other people like famous business owners don't have a lot of qualifications or none at all. They associate themselves with the right people & take the right risks or are in the right place at the right time. Call it luck/skill/Kismet. Whatever.... |

People will all ways find a way outside of the system thankfully. It was Blair who really went mad for it and convinced everyone a degree was a prerequisite for a worthwhile and lucrative career. |

I believe that there's an art to teaching and to maintain curiousity you have to be able to "lift" that lesson from off the page.
Some mentioned youtube and self learning, i think this is becoming more & more relevant.
If you like history i recommend listening to a guy called Dan Carlin & his "hardcore history" podcasts. Fantastically researched. |

Depends on the exams. The school ones didn't really matter as I left school with good GCSEs but awful A levels so did an apprenticeship and I'm making a good living out of it.
However, if I want to be more successful, I know that I need to get more qualifications in my field which could mean more exams  |

When I left school, my teacher said she didn’t feel confident I would ever succeed in life. Hateful cow she was!
So here I am, graduated twice and run own business!
However, you can have all of the nice things and the personality of nat!
So just enjoy and live life!

Being serious for a minute *shudders*, my students come back to visit me years and years later. A former student who is now finishing his PhD is meeting me for coffee soon to talk me through his research. I haven't really had the need to be terribly negative or threatening to my little lot, but even the NFCs get masses of support and help to do something useful (whatever that might be). |

That’s often the case , I left school at 15 and went back to uni at 28, then did a masters at 31 , best thing I ever did , loved learning as an adult. But I don’t regret the 13 years working and travelling the world in between, where I am now is a result of both |
