Nothing if you don't like running in groups but for me parkrun gave me a running family. I met people who have encouraged me and pushed me to do more than I would have in my own. They inspired me to enter races I never thought I could do. They supported me, helped me train, gave me a shoulder to cry on when I was not feeling it etc.
I'm a magpie and love a shiny but of bling and have quite a collection of medals. I've followed in my dads footsteps in running the London marathon.
Parkrun is free and timed and they aim for it to always be so that anyone can do it. You don't have to run it all or even any of it. It's about creating a community where anyone is welcome and increasing activity levels.
I've seen children grow up into wonderful young adults over the years.
I love it. |

It's a great little organised run each Saturday.
It helps you get out and meet people, challenge and progress your pace (if you want to) by recording your results and racing against others.
And obviously post run endorphins for other fun things.... |

Never done one but, I've done 7 half marathons this year (on my own), I'd love some company but park runs don't appeal to me; I'm too competitive and will end up racing and exasibate my heart condition. |

The first post lockdowns Parkrun hurt! It turns out the year and a bit of running on my own where I’m not pushing myself has not kept me in a good 5 km time. |

I did the first one back.
I was quite irregular with them before Covid but they are good fun. Quite a few different ones by me so I can choice flat runs or hilly ones which is awesome. |

Parkrun was magical to me when I first started. I was amazed how I was able to do something I had hated all my life, just because I was surrounded by friendly people. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to get active.
Unfortunately, I stopped running even before Covid and the lockdown restrictions haven't helped my fitness. I hope I'll make a return one day. |

I think you can do it this year, there are some that let you race, if you don’t feel like a 10k you can do the 5k. I’ll get in trouble if I mention their name I think |

I notice that a few people had numbers on their T shirts e.g., '50' or '100'. Is that a Park run thing and means they have done more than 50 or 100 park runs or is it something completely different? |

Yes, it's to show they have completed at least that many parkruns |

You used to get a free t-shirt for completing 50 or 100 Park runs, not any more though. Maybe you can buy them, information will be on the Website. |

Yes you pay for your t-shirt now.
When I first started they used to do a parkrunner of the month at each venue, and you'd get a voucher for a free pair of trainers.
Sadly parkrun now has bigger sponsors, bigger pay packets and a huge marketing database developed over years, but parkrunners given less back. |

OK thanks for the information.
Well thankfully, so far, it has all been free with a few £ for a printed tag (in the post). When I raced many years ago, you had to pay club fees and race entrance fees for the number and medal etc. Even the track cost about £1 a night (probably a few £ now). So I am not going to complain.
Trainers were £30 each (for hand made fitted ones) and £10 plus postage to put a new sole on them. Now they are mass produced, inferior fit and quality and well over £100. Some things don't progress do they? |

I noticed that if you go sub 20 for the course close to us, there is a good chance you would win the event. |

That is how it would have been when I ran regularly many years ago. Winning times would have been about 14.30 for the men and about 18mins for the women.
Are there lots of people who attend and or is the standard quite good? |

Just depends on the event. Some parkruns will have a few dozen going along, others can have well over 500. Some you can 'win' with a time of 20 mins, others you'll have to be in the low 15 mins to stand any chance.
Plus some events will be fast flat as a pancake tarmac route, others can be hilly off-road forest routes. |

I want to do the park run thing too but I'm avoiding them as I'm highly competitive too. I'll get there and slog myself stupid trying to get beat who ever is in front of me but as I have a heart condition I need to avoid over doing thing or I risk making my condition worse (which as happened in the past). |

Well quite a few of the runs are done in well under 18 minutes (from what I have seen). So there is not much chance you will be too embarrassed by your lead.
I am doing them with my wife and not racing them yet because I am not fit but a good few years back, I would have had a shower before you got back 18.30. |

People do well under that at few I checked with a flat course. 16 something minutes for the first finisher here. So although it's not a race, everyone is welcome to run/walk at whatever pace they feel like. |

So the lesson here is that nobody, not even Sir Mo, can claim to be too competitive.
It doesn't matter how fast you are, the point is in any race, even the Olympics, you go and do the very best you can. For Park runs it doesn't matter if you manage 13 minutes or 1hr 13 minutes. |

But it isn’t about the time it’s about being competitive and overdoing it… you can be as fast or as slow and be over competitive it’s a challenge |

It doesn't matter how fast anyone else is, the person you are trying to beat is yourself at a previous parkrun.
One of the many things I like about parkrun is the support given to everyone, from the whippets doing 15 minutes to the person struggling to do it in an hour (but still going out and doing it). (77/274) |
