Does anyone else have an inability to picture in their heads?
Its something ive just accepted as my normal all my life but i now realise its impacted my sexlife, as i cant fantasise!! |

I don't actually see pictures but I can describe a scene to myself. I find it fascinating the difference in how people's minds work. |

Me too. and what we think is such a normal way of thinking is surprising to others!
ways ive found it affecting me here, is say admiring a sexy body .. nice, but no afterimage lingers, i couldnt fantasise about it. whereas if im sexting with someone building a scene and a mood in words thats fantastic!
so i need very articulate men to turn me on, no matter how hot and sound they are!
On the other hand, men im with can rest assured im not imagining they are someone else  |

The minds eye is another way of saying it. I understand it's quite common but I've never associated it with sex before now. I know It can make physical problem solving quite difficult but the sex side must be a pain in the arse. |

I think it's a bonus! My ex was so good at reading a partner because he had no preconceptions about what was going to happen in advance due to over fantasising. He was so very much in the moment and had highly attuned senses. He was the most generous, sensual and satisfying lover I've ever had......*goes looking for vibrator...* |

I'm like that. "Picture this" hmmm ok. Nope. I can, like you, use the words or describe the sensations but there's no actual visual.
Something I do get though is at times I can smell a picture I'm looking at. |

The biggest hurdle I've found is meditation. So much sodding visualisation that I simply cannot do. I really think that it would make a huge difference to my life if I could visualise for my mental wellbeing and general feelings of calm and fulfillment. |

I have great visualisation skills and even I gave up on that type of meditation. Body scan and breath focussed meditations are much more accessible and fulfilling. |

Thankfully not! I can visualise whatever I think about pretty easily.
I find this kind of thing fascinating. I remember when I learnt that some people only think simple words and not sentences. I think it’s called aphantasia when you can't visualise? |

OP; Can you visualise at all if someone were to describe (or possibly if you vocally prerecorded and played back) a given scene to you? A bit like the Wiccan practice of ‘Pathworking’ in effect….but with a sexual context.

I suffer from this and always have done. I've been asked to describe my greatest fantasy and people think it's a cop out when I say I've never had one.
I also suffer from a form of Anhedonia.
I never get excited in anticipation of anything and while I can experience pleasure it doesn't have any lasting effect. I'm very much in the moment and focused when with someone but it's like having the slate wiped immediately after.

I have to concentrate very hard for very little. But a friend of mine with experience in what you suggest did say its possible to improve the ability with such practises.
but im 46, ive lived with it ok this long! Its interesting to discuss it

Oh now thats interesting, i never realised it impacts on anticipation but that makes so much sense now you mention it. I would tend to be overly anxious rather than excited about new things...that was a fun-spoiler |

There are a lot of myths in pop phycology about creativity and one is that you have a very clear picture of what want to bring into being. It does happen with some people but some of the most creative people don’t work like this at all , they start with a very vague abstract idea or concept and then immediately start creating , refining, iterating, changing. This is how I write poetry and how many composers work so I’d suggest it’s just your creative style to create as you work rather than upfront. It works for sexual fantasies in the same way , it’s just a different approach |

There are degrees of Aphantasia and I think Exeter University did a study a while back. Until I read an article about it I didn't realise it applied to me. I'm on the extreme end of this in that I have the complete inability to visualise anything.
I always thought that "counting sheep" to try and go to sleep was just something people said and I didn't realise that most people can actually visualise the sheep!
For me when I close my eyes that's it, no images whatsoever.
Perhaps, just thinking about it, it's why roleplay in any form does nothing for me as I can't visualise what I'm suppoed to be playing? |
