Movies ruined by the "woke culture"

There seems to be a trend in Hollywood today where certain movies and franchises are being ruined by the "woke culture" because they're being more focused on pushing certain agendas like feminism or diversity rather than giving a decent story just to appease people on Twitter who will "Reeeee" if they don't get their way.

Let's look at Ghostbusters (2016) for example. I didn't mind an all female cast as the lead roles and the new gadgets that they use to fight the ghosts were pretty cool but there was a sense of Misandrism in the movie as the male characters were either idiots or jerks. The movie's director Paul Feig would even call people who didn't like the movie "Misogynistic Trolls".

Do you think movies are being ruined by the "woke culture"?

If so, tell me what movies do you think were ruined.

Remakes are made all the time, I don't see the issue of the remakes including an all women cast as it's just a twist on the original. The original still exists as well so you can choose not to watch the remakes.

That being said, The Mummy with Time Cruise and The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith are awful and don't compare with the originals

Very true. The Mummy remake Tom Cruise really did suck.

"I always find you can tell a lot from people who use certain words like woke and snowflake."

Its a very perjorative term. It seems to be mostly used by people who dont like change. I wonder if people campaigning for universal sufferage would have been labelled as 'woke'?

I havnt seen the film the OP references so cant comment on the misandry claim but I feel you reduce your argument by using the 'W' word because its thrown about so freely as a derogatory description.

Are you saying the whole movie was ruined by just a "sense" of Misandrism?

What about movies where the female characters are all shallow big titty blondes? Or need rescuing by 007 who doesn't take no for an answer? Are those original movies bad because of their portrayal of some people?

If you were making a movie, how would you portray the characters and would you seek to add in as much diversity as would equal the real world or would you just go for the more easily available actors?

In fact is "woke" just a new term of derision for people who still wear blinkers and see anything different as a threat?

I don't know. Do you?

Which is not true. Reactionaries hold up cases of badly made films with diversity ignoring crap standard films that do badly. Forgetting that Black Panther and the first Wonder Women did very well.

The Oscar nominated films between 2019 and 2021 with diversity have done well. But hey, people who want to stick in their sad reactionary rut will grab at any pitiful slogan to justify their positions.

It's a very grey area.

"woke" is fine, the way that it is forced is the problem.

Ghostbusters (2016) did everything it could to turn people against it. On top of that, it was not funny. It was as if it was a parody of the previous movies. Doing nothing else but riding on the coat tails of the original.

Another example is the scene in Avengers endgame, the "Girl power" scene. It was forced and blatant - exactly what people don't want. Just look at that scene compared to a scene in Mandalorian season 2 finale which got huge praise from a lot of people that get accused of being sexist. Three very strong female characters kicking ass without any need to bring attention to it. The story lead it to that point, and it made sense.

Granted the avengers scene didn't ruin the movie but still, it was disliked not for what it was but for the way it was done.

Keep in mind most of the people that get called out for hating on "woke" things are some of the first to support the badass female characters that are Ripley, Sarah Connor, Trinity, Lara Croft, Selene, Cat Woman, Zoe Washburne, Rita Vrataski, Buffy, Faith, and Willow, hell even Princess Leia was badass.

I for one hate forced and blatant "woke", I dislike having characters (strongly established) changed from their gender and race (this goes for any change of any character). But I do welcome more movies of none white male leads, if they don't exist, create them.

Black panther, yes! Shang chi, yes! Black widow, yes! Bad boys, yes! Blade, yes! So long as the story is good.

If I was to make a movie, I would make sure it is more focused on giving a good story with well written characters and equality between genders and races.

I do agree that movies like Black Panther and Wonder Woman do as they're good Superhero movies.

As for the Oscars, most of the movies that won the best Oscars looked kind of boring to be honest.

Same here. This is exactly what I'm on about. If the movie is forcing stuff down our throats, it's not good storytelling.

How many films are made in which the main hero is a gay man, woman or trans ? I bet there’s more where the white guy is an architect.

I love films from the 60s to 90s but unless it’s some ‘indie film’ you won’t find many gay love scenes or romantic comedies in a mainstream summer blockbuster, during those decades. Even in the recent Star Trek film Sulu not the main character is gay (I know because the original actor is gay) and has obviously been added due to this so called ‘woke’ attitude. But why not make Kirk gay ?

What’s the opposite to woke by the way ?

There’s an obvious attempt to now be more inclusive of a variety of people within society, I only see that as a good thing long term.

I hear complaints about "woke culture" and they leave me rather confused. What exactly are people saying should be in movies that is being squeezed out? Sexism? Racism? What's wrong with a movie that depicts women's equality or that racism is wrong? Are you saying that movies are better with a bit of racism and sexism thrown in? Can scripts that don't demean women or racial minorities really not be written?

I have heard that the newer Ghostbusters movie wasn't that good, but was it really because the main cast were all women, or was it just a bad script that male actors wouldn't have been able to save either?

Why do these characters need to be changed? They are established characters. Create new ones. I'm all for that.

Have a movie about Sulu captaining his own ship (it happened in the lore outside of the movies). Id watch it no problem. Make it not about Kirk, instead of changing Kirk or any of the other characters.

Sulu was never changed, it was just never brought up, and in homage and respect to George Takai being gay, they made it so in the newer movies.

Bad movies are not exclusive to "woke" but a lot of bad movies could be better if there was not so much focus on making them "woke" just as a lot of bad movies could have been avoided by just ignoring the sexuality of the main character altogether. There doesn't need to be a romance or love interest in every movie.

I personally use the term "woke" because it's just simple and shorter to condense it all in to that one word. Hence the quotations too.

I totally agree that being more inclusive in society is a good thing and have always respected the LGBTQ community.

When it comes to gay characters, there are some movies with good characters. Take IT Chapter 2 for example, it was brutal seeing two gay men being beaten up at the beginning of the movie and it was indicated that Richie was gay and had a thing for Eddie and was distraught when he was killed by Pennywise.

I see nothing wrong with movies depicting that sexism and racism is bad as long as it's part of the movie's plot and doesn't feel forced.

Like I said, I didn't mind an all female cast in Ghostbusters (2016). It was down to a bad script and unfunny jokes.

It was just bad, straight up bad BUT anybody who was speaking up about it being bad was called out for disliking it because it was all women leads. You were not allowed (twitter etc) to dislike the movie for any other reason.

Which is where a lot of the problem is, bad movies are hiding behind "woke" more often.

People forget the oscars are global.

Canada, USA, Britain, Australia, France to Russia. Statistically white people should dominate the oscars.

Africa does not really take part, India does not, Asia mostly does not except maybe one asian film a year.

But we have to imagine all these white countries are equally split between asians, whites, african, etc. Its just a tad bit of nonsense.

Look at the amzon thing, the underground railroad. They got a south african and british actors who had black skin to play the roles instead of african americans who came from families who went through it. They might as well have picked white actors. They don't care. Minorities are just check boxes on a bit of paper.

"There seems to be a trend in Hollywood today where certain movies and franchises are being ruined by the "woke culture" because they're being more focused on pushing certain agendas like feminism or diversity rather than giving a decent story just to appease people on Twitter who will "Reeeee" if they don't get their way.

Wait until there’s a female Bond

How about Henry the 8th as gay ? . Oscar Wilde as straight. "

I think there's a black Anne Boleyn and other primary cast members on Channel 5. There's a good article online about it from the Radio Times. It says there's more important attributes to acting than someone's colour which makes them a better fit for the role.

The recent BBC drama had a black lady cast as Anne Boleyn. Historically and factually incorrec, of course.

Clearly done to generate some interest in the failing Beeb, but the actress will be remembered for the colour of her skim not her ability to act. That's a shame.

Imagine the outcry if we had Ross Kemp playing Nelson Mandela.

Star Wars episode 8 & episode 9. I got bored in the middle of episode 8 and went to see what my cat was doing. I have yet to watch episode 9 all the way through, it’s that woke and that bad.

Even Mark Hamill hated what they did to Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi. The character of Rey was an overpowered Mary Sue that somehow managed to use the force right off the bat without any knowledge or training.

This is silly. Charlton Heston played El Cid but he wasnt Spanish.

Mel Gibson played William Wallice but hes not Scottish. He also played Jesus but hes not Jewish.

It's almost as if someone has developed the idea of some phoney 'culture war'to divert attention from something.

I agree. They were bad movies that made no sense and had no character or story arch.

I know the prequel trilogy was kind of bad but at least it had an arch which showed how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader.

No, I don’t think any movies are being destroyed by ‘woke’ culture. Instead, I think it’s convenient for deplorable profit-over-people governments to create the illusion of culture wars and infringed rights to give them a free pass on their significantly worse behaviours.

Most examples of the so-called evils of ‘woke’ are in reality just examples of not being a complete dick to other people, taking time to respect different life experiences, cultures and seeking to bring a degree of equality to life.

I’m reminded of the quote ‘When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression’.

And for what it’s worth, the new Ghostbusters was a good film with some strong lead performances and new humour to be found in changing genders. No big deal, there’s plenty space for roles for all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds.

The movies were pretty bad I don't think a so called woke culture has anything to do with it.

Bad scripts bad acting dodgy locations.

Look at the remake of the Italian Job.

That was utter crap compared to the original.

I heard that when the movie 1917 came out, some people on Twitter were complaining that there weren't any female characters as soldiers in the movie.

I heard someone completely made that up so people could get angry about it.

It was just a shit movie to be honest.

You can’t replicate the magic of the original and the chemistry of the cast. It was groundbreaking in terms of effects now those sort of things are two a penny on TV.

No the complaints I saw, was about the sikh soldier. I mean what did those soldiers do for us in the War ? (Said in a Life of Brian way)

"I always find you can tell a lot from people who use certain words like woke and snowflake.

Yeah. It's like that phrase "get woke, go broke".

Which is not true. Reactionaries hold up cases of badly made films with diversity ignoring crap standard films that do badly. Forgetting that Black Panther and the first Wonder Women did very well.

The Oscar nominated films between 2019 and 2021 with diversity have done well. But hey, people who want to stick in their sad reactionary rut will grab at any pitiful slogan to justify their positions."

Lol calling people "reactionaries"

might as well be waving a red flag
