The phrase “I beg to differ” can instantly win an argument for the opposition.
To beg to differ is to beg to argue your point, you are essentially asking the other person to be allowed to continue the argument, if the follow up is a decline of any sort they win by default

"Ladies cannot be colour blind"
Someone who was colour blind himself once told me that around 1 in 4 men are so afflicted and that it's actually a survival trait that dates back to the Stone Age when we used to hunt animals for our food, and provided hunting parties with an advantage. Apparently, being colour blind helps spot animals that would otherwise blend into the environment due to their markings |

1 in 12 men is colour blind, compared to 1 in 200 women.
It could be an evolutionary throwback, or it could just be a genetic malfunction. |

"There is no part of your body older than 10 years
Also not true, sorry.
So Stephen Fry lied to me? "
Afraid so. Certain intestinal cells are 16-18 years old on average, skeletal muscle cells around 15 years. Epithelial cells only last 5 days, red blood cells 2-4 months.
The AVERAGE for the age of all of the cells in your body works out to approximately 7 years. |

Did you know that the traditional greeting between males in the Walibri tribe of Australia was to shake one another’s penises?
Apparently it is not practiced today but it was believed that to refuse a penis was deemed as a show of hostility.

So why does a tattoo last for longer than 10 years if every cell in your body is renewed within that 10 year time frame? "
I'm going to defer to Spunky |

They live in the Northern Territories. They also go by the name of the Yapa Tribe and/or the Warlpiri Tribe (on account of speaking the Warlpiri language) |

The colour blindness gene is recessive and is found on the x chromosome. If a man has it (roughly 1/10 chance) he will be colourblind. If a woman has it, she must also have it on her other x chromosome so the odds are 1/10 x 1/10 or 1/100. It's a sex linked characteristic. |

Every cell in your body is not renewed within a ten year time frame, as I previously explained.
The skin has two layers, the top layer, the epidermis (which does constantly shed and regenerate) and the dermis underneath, which is mostly composed of collagen and elastin, and gives our skin its resilience. The ink from tattooing is deposited in the dermis layer which becomes permanent, although it does fade and disperse a little with age. The only way to remove a tattoo is to destroy the dermis by dermabrasion or laser, or surgically cut it out. |

That’s a very interesting fact, doesn’t explain why women do it though ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

"Ladies cannot be colour blind"
They can. Red-green colour blindness is an X-linked recessive trait so a mother who carries the mutation plus a father who is red-green colour blind can produce a female child with two mutated copies of the gene.
There are many different forms and causes of colour blindness though, not all is inherited and may be due to new spontaneous mutation or diseases which cannot be passed on. |

What Mrs KC said ^^
My mother-in-law was red-green colour blind, as is my ex-husband. My dad is colour blind, as is my son. If my ex husband and I had had a daughter she may very well have been colour blind too. |

Several of our phrases used originate from the days when people were hanged at Tyburn in London (sort of next to where Marble Arch is today).
--
One for the Road comes from when the condemned was one final drink from a tavern on Oxford Street.
--
To Go West refers to the east to west direction the cart carrying the condemned travelled towards the gallows from Newgate prison (along Oxford Street).
--
Hangers On were originally friends and family who would bribe the executioner to be allowed to pull down on the condemned mans legs as he was hanged so as to cause a less prolonged death (hanging victims str*ngled to death as the trapdoor had not been developed yet).
--
Money For Old Rope was the practice of the hangman cutting up the noose and selling parts of it as a grisly souvenir |

Due to selective breeding a modern horse produces 1.2 horse power compared with horses of old.
Vehicle manufacturers don't take this into account potentially causing many law suits like the emissions scandal ![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

The phrase "mad as a hatter" is because when hatters used to make hats they used mercury to stiffen the fabric. This would be rubbed in by hand, the mercury would slowly poison the person causing them to go mad and then die..... |

The money for old rope actually comes from the picking apart of ropes to create oakum to be used in the calking of the seams of wooden sailing boats . It was done in workhouses by women and children |

Freezing the brass balls off a monkey comes from ships with cannons. The monkey is a triangle where the brass canon balls were kept and at night the cold would cause the monkey to freeze and constrict and the canon balls fell off |

First cultivated in Turkey, the tulip traveled from east to west, triggering the Tulipmania, the world's first economic bubble and almost ruining The Netherlands, crashing the tulip market in 1637; yet, it remains one of the most beloved flowers. |

Not true. Dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, predating homo habilis (earliest human ancestor) by 63 million years. |
