In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

.....women, girls, females, wenches etc.

A few threads recently have made me think about this and I wondered, does it irritate anyone else when people use a particular term to refer to women as a whole?

Girls really annoys me. Irrationally, because it isn't hurting anyone, but it feels patronising and in some ways pejorative, also wrong because to me a girl is someone too young to be here on fab.

Females is weird. Ladies and women all good. I love "Wench" but apparently I'm weird.

So ladies (or your preferred term), what do you think? And everyone else..... what are your thoughts?

Girls is patronising. I'm unsure if ladies is over the top, creepy, or sort of a back handed insult. (Might be an Aussie thing - being too deferential or polite can be insulting. Do not ask me to explain, I dunno

Oh I love to be called "treacle", but that's also a throwback to 20 years ago....

Most pet names make me want to hurl. There is one that makes me melt but only from one person.

I don't really give it much thought. I'm not someone to take offense easily especially when none is really meant. People's use of words is different depending on their upbringing and dialect but I think sometime people can be quick to find things offensive if it suits them to.

I remember a guy years ago calling me a Wench during a roleplay. It was most fitting for the type of scene we were playing out, but to use that in everyday language seems weird to me.

Oh dear I refer to my girlie mates as merched. And my grandad used to refer to me and my sister as bois (boys) just because it's a term of endearment where I'm from. In general I don't mind what you call me as a collective, as long as you're not being mean.

“Ladies” is my preferred choice. Rolls off the tongue much easier. Otherwise I’ll use women and girls depending on the context.

I can’t keep up with all the newfangled terms we’re supposed to use in order to not cause offence to someone.

Words that used to be normal when I left Britain have now become somewhat unacceptable. I can’t think what they are now but it occasionally astonishes, and perhaps, amuses me when I come across one.

I agree, females are things, I go out with the girls but I'm not a girl, women is just meh as in women's issues etc just describes a bland group but I'm a lady! That's how I describe ladies, and think of myself even my daughter (she's a young lady) and definitely my preference

I have absolutely no problem with colloquialisms though ... down have often called burd or luvva by some 23 yo girl/lady/female etc!! And everyone else! Been called alsorts all over the country and actually take it as a compliment really! Could be a lot worse

In general there’s something about the term females I find grating when used and often quite sexist. Fortunately it’s not used a lot.

I really don’t like terms of endearment by people I don’t know. Those I do know, well then I don’t mind at all and whatever comes up between us

I think females has become more popular because of a TV show that my brain is not helping me to name right now but I think Meli mentioned it up there....^^

My issue with that..... is WHICH bit of skirt? Hem? Waist? The bit that flicks out annoyingly when you sit down?

Sorry, couldn’t disagree more about men using the term ladies. It was a common term when I was growing up. It’s the term that comes to mind for me. It always has. We used it formally in school, despite it being an all boys school.

At the time, women and girls were perfectly acceptable as well.

Wrench most certainly was not. Sign of the times.
