This morning i got the milk in and a bird had busted the top with its beak . i made a brew and smiled thinking that always used to happen in the olden days, not so much now. birds must be lactose intolerant or something nowdays.

Anyhow, what little day to day things give you a blast from the past feeling?

Wood burning. Reminds me of my Dad making bonfires in our garden as a child but also when I lived in a house without electricity or gas and my beautiful wood burner was my winter lifeline.

It was off grid before I'd even heard that phrase ! In the Spanish countryside far from any mains connections.

Seeing old shears or push mowers, alongside metal files. My dad was super lawn proud and did the lines the lot!

Also, allotments, our dear old neighbour grew rhubarb, potato, onions, beans, strawberries. He was so kind and turned a blind eye to me and my sisters as kids stealing pea pods to snack on!

Smells are such a powerful link to the past. There’s a certain type of plant in summer, no idea what it is , but every time i smell it I’m instantly transported to Darwin in 1995 getting off a plane in the middle of the night to a red hot wind blowing on my face , and that smell

I learnt the same harsh lesson after watching the old Milk Tray adverts.....

I decided to mimic them by stealthily creeping into a lady’s apartment to place the box down but was promptly arrested for breaking and entering and she took out a restraining order against me

To add insult to injury, it turned out the lady in question was lactose intolerant to boot

The smell of coal fires, growing up in a rural village in the 80's everyone had one and it reminds me of playing out with my mates on a night in winter where you could see and smell all the smoke in the air.

I certainly don't miss it being at home when the wind would occasionally blow the smoke back down the chimney and it would fill the living room though!!
