Anything by Jedward, The Cheeky girls, Timmy Mallet and especially U2!
Their songs should all be consigned to die the horrible deaths they all so righteously deserve!
Add in the Rolling Stones and Slades Christmas drivel as well and I'll have myself a merry little Christmas |

Bohemian Rhapsody - Panic At The Disco covered it for the soundtrack of Suicide Squad and to be honest it was pretty much a carbon copy karaoke version of the original.
I have no problem with covers that take the original and put a new spin on it - but those that just re-create the original are pointless in my mind |

I totally agree. I like rock and metal and should like this...
But to original is so deeply ingrained that I hear this and want the Simon and Garfunkle version. |

Paul Young didn't record the original "Wherever I lay my hat", it's a Marvin Gaye tune.
IMHO the Paul Young cover is better than Marvin Gaye's original.

Even if it was for a Christmas advert. "
I nearly cried when that came on the radio yesterday! No songs should be covered, unless by a covers band. That would definitely save on the heartache of hearing a great song slaughtered, despite there being some great covers |

So I'm not the only one that loves it then. Interestingly, there seems to be a whole culture of us born around the same time whose first ever Queen album was A Day At The Races...I guess because they 'overpressed' it thinking it would double the success of A Night At The Opera (it didn't, punk happened instead) and as a result, all the seond-hand shops were filled to the brim with copies by the mid 80s.
It is SUCH an astounding song, though, an expression of Fred's pure and utter devotion to/for the subject of his love. The only thing that anyone could dedicate to me which would be better than that would be 'Vision' by Peter Hammill (or more precisely, Marc Almond's cover version thereof) |

Ordinarily, I'd agree with a huge NO to any cover version of an original. However, I actually like Disturbed's version, because it is different, not just trying to copy the original!
Similarly, Derek and the Dominos version of Hendrix's Little Wing.....vastly different! |

To be fair Morrissey's cover of That's Entertainment isn't bad - likewise Liam Gallagher's cover of Carnation, or Noel's cover of To Be Someone
There are some not bad Jam covers on both Fire & Skill: The Songs of the Jam and the Specialized charity album of a few years ago

I just remembered IT HAS, by Gregorian monks, so it is a very apt funeral son, and Demi Rousos too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNgU3ojwlCM
I'll Find My Way Home is a song written by Jon Anderson and Vangelis for the Jon and Vangelis' 1981 album The Friends of Mr Cairo. The song was released on December 1, 1981. It has been later covered by numerous artists, including Demis Roussos, Chayanne, Gregorian, Project Pitchfork and Spanish singer Ana Belén. The song is also featured in the movie The Challengers. Never knew about the others.
Those two songs are my funeral playlist. because the first time I heard them, they were on the radio one melting into the other. Truly magical and really personal to me there and then. I can't remember which once was first...
Just the opening six lines are enough to leave you with more questions than answers...the whole song could be performed on the shrink's couch and should be on somebody's syllabus resulting in one helluvas thesis.
You ask me where to begin
Am I so lost in my sin
You ask me where did I fall
I'll say I can't tell you when
But if my spirit is lost
How will I find what is near...
On a side note, Donna Summer really made The State of Independence become better than the original and almost her own song. |

What's the other album you refer to ,m"
Oh the cover of Start! was awful but some of the other tracks were good.
The other album is a charity one in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and other charities featuring mostly unsigned bands doing the covers - there have been several albums each one with covers of a different artist (Madness, The Specials, The Beat, The Jam, The Clash have all been featured amongst others) - just Google "Specialized Gifted A Tribute To The Jam" and you should find The Jam one - as ever with that sort of thing it's a mix of good and bad (and Pretty Green doesn't fare any better here either!!) but worth a listen |

I love a bizarre cover. The further away in style from the original the better.
Sisters of Mercy doing a version of Dolly Parton's Jolene? Great!
Tatu covering The Smith's I am the Sun? Perfect
Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt? Very different and very good.
A decent cover can bring a whole new perception to a song, and change the way you think about the original.

Agree totally - for me the sign of a good cover is when you sit and think "I know this song" but can't immediately think why.
As I said further up, I love covers that put a new spin on the original and don't see the point of the effectively karaoke straight covers - Uptown Girl by Westlife is a good example of the latter |

Gary Barlow and Liam Neeson (along with others) totally destroyed their re-make of Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds.
This will forever be the worst of the worst of cover versions and the worst showing of man's ability to destroy everything that is good in the world.

"Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd.
"
This has been covered quite a few times, as listed on the secondhandsongs website.
Bands such as Queensryche/Dream Theater, Scissor Sisters and scouse band Ananthema.
Anathema seems to have done a better job, than the Scissor Sisters, who made their version sound more like the Bee Gees.
As a side note, my cousin toured with Anathema as their bass player in the early noughties. |

She was due to record her vocals for that version the day she died. I would have loved to have heard that. Whilst it was a touching tribute it will never hold a candle to the original in my opinion.
" Scott Bradlees postmodern jukebox did an excellent cover of this song. More a lament rather than Dolores' angry original. Worth a listen perhaps?"
I hadn’t come across that one before, it’s the best cover of zombie I have heard, probably because it wasn’t an attempt to be a carbon copy.
Whilst I was listening to that I did come across Scott Bradlee and Haley Reinhart’s cover of Radiohead’s Creep, that was amazing. |

Whatever our emotional attachment to the originals, if we didn't have covers songs, we'd never have had Madness's It must be Love, Soft Cell's Tainted Love or Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah to name but a few.
Even if you think that's no bad thing, artists should always be able to reinterpret old material. Johnny Cash's American Recordings albums are almost all uniformly brilliant. |

"Freed from desire Gala"
That song should never have even been RECORDED, let alone covered.
Although it did give me a giggle at the time. "My love has got no money, he's got his trombone leaves" "I'm free from desire, mine arse end is purified" etc. Also, from her excess 'la la la'-ing, are we to conclude that the lady and Crustal Waters of 'Gypsy Woman' infamy are actually one and the same? Or at least related. |

I think we had same upbringing...great & varied music from an early age.
A friend & I were lucky, both had older siblings so allowed to go to gigs with them from a young age. I remember Feb 71 Winter Gardens Bournemouth.. Van Der Graaf Generator with both Lindisfarne & Genesis supporting. Year later Genesis again at Village Bowl 2 weeks later same venue but Curved Air!
So many others over the following years, too many to mention but great bands, quality music that was so raw, new, different & in some cases outrageous! Some of the kids today just don't get it!!! |
