Star Wars definitely and anything with Kristen Stewart she’s so wooden in everything I’ve very seen her in .

Slightly related

Roles in films that were totally over hyped or unnecessary - Anne Hathaway as cat women in dark knight rises , what does she add other than looking amazing in a catsuit I mean her acting in it is dire .

Carlito's Way - a lot of people seem to like it, and I went to the flicks to see it off the back of a recommendation and didn't see what the fuss was at all.

Any of the Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit films - saw the first one when it came out and nearly fell asleep

Dirty Dancing compared to a lot of fluff films is quite good, decent music and Patrick Swayze is very good in his role.

Shawshank Redemption was brilliant but the happy ending ruined the film for me. It’s pandering to those who need that type of ending and both me and the Director agree (he didn’t want that ending either)

Mark Kermode claims the Exorcist is the best film he’s ever seen. It’s alright but has never had me on the edge of my seat or find it particularly frightening. (The book is a hell of a lot better)

Another vote for Titanic here.

The visuals were amazing but the story was cliché shite that would barely pass for a TV movie. An extraordinary setting for a crap story doesn't lift the crap story or stereotypical characters above being crap and stereotypical. Almost all of it could have been set somewhere else anyway.

I'd like to add most superhero movies to the list.

I resent Star Wars and Shawshank being mentioned. Luke (guess where my Fab pseudonym comes from.)

I agree with a hell of a lot of the ones mentioned here.

Add to that,

Most Tarantino movies.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I entirely agree with The Shawshank Redemption.

Whilst certainly a well made film featuring a great ensemble cast who all supply great performances, I was sadly, not enthralled.

My pick though: Inception (and additionally most films by the same director, Christopher Nolan).

Overlong and pretentious. In fact, the same idea was done better in 1983’s, Dreamscape.

Talking of overrated directors, don’t get me started on Quentin Tarantino.....

This one may draw unto me the wraith of the hefty fan base who will doubtless wish to behead me and take my Quickening:

Highlander.

A fantastic premise.

A fantastic soundtrack.

A wonderfully hissable villain in Clancy Brown.

But it’s one of those films for me in which the superb concept is ultimately far, far better than the actual execution.

I actually preferred the series (I’m now going into a witness protection programme)

I loved Highlander when I first saw it, without knowing what it was and watched it countless times and still have it on DVD....*HOWEVER* I decided to "educate" my daughter about a year ago and introduce her to it - and that killed it for me...think it was a mix of the incredibly dated SFX and the hammy acting (that I don't know why I'd not picked up on before) that did it...so I'll not disagree with you

Rocky. Fucking hell man, all that and he loses? Really?

American Beauty. A boring, uninvolving story of a knobhead perv.

The Hustler. Decent story let down by trying to make pool interesting. Pool is always going to be really dull to watch. It's ok if you can fast forward through all the pool.

Oh dear, Shawshank wasn’t that popular to start with, it was a slow burner that gained Notoriety through word of mouth, but some people don’t like when things become popular, think it’s called elitism, I’m sure if it was an underground classic you would be raving about it.

Basically, ffs grow up!

S"

Nobody had ever said Fast and Furious was a good film. Any of the 33 films they’ve done. They are entertaining however because they are so shite.

Also I’m biased because I was an extra on the 6th one.

My pick would be the star wars franchise. The continuity is shocking as is the “plot”

To be fair, Grimsby is not overrated. It was panned by the critics and everybody I have talked to about it says it was crap. I personally think it was a dreadful film.

For something to be overrated, there has to be somebody who actually likes it in the first place, and I haven't found anybody yet.

Somewhere In The Ether…

Pride & Predjudice.

...I’m referring to the big screen version starring Keira Knightley.

The BBC adaptation of Jane Austin’s classic starring Colin Firth was absolutely delightful.

The big screen version however, I found to be unforgivably boring with bland performances and characterisations throughout.

Thankfully, the big screen version of Sense And Sensibility was very good though which somewhat redressed the balance

I think Man Hunter was a good film but I prefer the version (Red Dragon) with Hopkins and Edward Norton. I see Anthony Hopkins as closer to what I imagine Lectar to be like having read the books. I enjoyed all three of Hopkins films but I rate them the order that plot fits.

Shawshank Redemption is a funny one. When it was first released it didn't do very well at all. So, seriously underrated. Then, for whatever reason, it gained cult status and then became really popular which is possibly why some people think it is overrated. Probably some rebound effect. Either way, I personally think it's a great film. Love it.

One of the biggest disappointments I had (film wise) was A Fish Called Wanda. For me, it was massively overrated. Hyped as the funniest film ever and that probably exaggerated my disappointment as it really wasn't that funny

"Avatar , genuinely don’t see what all the fuss is about "

Avatar was only rated at the time of its release because of the pioneering use of 3D. Even then it was acceoted that the story wasn't all that and the acting was meh.

I don't think it's so rated anymore because it all seems so normal now.

This raises a very good point actually - a lot of the films that I think are over rated (not necessarily the ones I named on this thread) are ones that have been very popular and hyped to the core as being "the best film since..." - so much so that when I've seen them I've been expecting something phenomenal but have been left disappointed when it hasn't been - whereas had I of not heard the hype I'd have enjoyed it?

Titanic is a good example of this for me - I got sick to death of the hype when it was released so much so I refused to see it - was only about a year later, after the hype died down, when I was sat on a flight from Houston (back in the days when in economy all you got was one film choice and that was shown on an overhead screen) and I could either watch Titanic or stare into space for three hours, so watched the film and cheesiness aside I actually enjoyed it.

"The batman with Heather ledger as the joker, crap!"

Couldn’t disagree more. The score, the cinematography. The way the joker is deliberately left as a mysterious character, all the little nods to events in the comic books that are just different enough that you might not notice them the first time. The fact that the joker wins even though he gets caught. It’s all brilliant.
