So I never understood what this word meant, but I know use reddit and Jesus Christ.
The whole blue pill thing, waifus, ‘voluntarily celibate but it’s not really voluntarily’ and god, just everything.
Certainly opened my eyes, I’m so bloody ignorant to a lot of things.
What’s your opinion on them? Are you one? Do you know one? Do you think they’re treated fairly or unfairly?
I hope I’m not offending anyone, this whole ‘incel’ thing is reaaaaaaally new to me.
Don’t get me wrong, I knew men who ‘fit into’ the incel category, but I didn’t realise just how big it was |

So please don’t turn it into a bitchy thread |

I saw a profile on here once predicting a violent backlash against women who reject Men based on looks.
He was a forum user as well. He didn’t last long or perhaps is back under a different name.
It’s a disturbing mindset.
Have a look at Elliot Rogers last video for an insight into how they feel.
Deeply unpleasant and entitled individuals. |

I dont know much about 'incels' but I have a basic understanding.
Unfortunately there are many of the type of profiles you describe on here.
And so many entitled and unpleasant people.
I'll say people because unpleasant comes in all genders.
Incel is just another word to describe someone with a serious mental health issue in my opinion.
Awful! |

I’m gonna have to add this thread to my research for my book.

Yeah it's not a reddit only problem but it has its dark corners like any messageboard or user-generated-content site.
I guess they're the extreme consequence of being THAT entitled regarding sex. "I'm not getting any, so here's why it's not my fault" is a very scary mindset. |

Stands for INvoluntary CELibates.
Primarily guys who think woman and wider society have conspired against them to withhold sex and love that they believe they ‘deserve’ as men.
They’re often obnoxious loners.
Several have committed quite nasty murders and terrorist attacks. |

They’re horrible. Their whole ideology is disturbing.
I’ve read on Reddit, Gab & a few other sites simply out of curiosity and to find out more, I was genuinely shocked.
The one that stuck with me was a thread about how women who are r*ped deserve it and should be thankful as they’ve probably spent their lives turning men down and turning their nose up at guys they don’t find attractive, so it’s a form of revenge.
Sickening. |

It's like a lot of these groups forming in modern society. Made up mainly of lonely, socially awkward, rudderless people being made to feel like they belong to something. All lead/influenced by a few properly dysfunctional dangerous people. Most just need help and a bit more acceptance, some just locking away.
Society has a hand in it but is not to blame. |

Incel types have always existed, they just used to become that weird guy with the alphabetically sorted porn collection that still lived with his mum. There'd be one or two in every town and on their own they would be anonymous and harmless.
The dark corners of the Internet have given these guys a place to congregate and share their ideas and become radicalised by genuine mysogynists.
The first time I came across them was during the 'gamergate' ho-har 4 or 5 years ago, when incels were weaponised by groups pushing back against a perceived feminist attack on the genuine sexism in video game culture. There were some horrific accounts of hate campaigns against women in the games industry.
Like all these groups though, especially on-line, once you know about them, they seem like a large organisation intent on disrupting normal polite society. In reality there is maybe a few hundred guys, they just have very loud voices and know how to use social media to amplify their views and radicalise disaffected teenage boys. Still that's a few hundred too many. |

Terrifying subculture online where people can say the most outrageous things online to get attention. Whether they genuinely believe the shit they come out with, or are just desperate to find a place they feel like they belong I don’t know.
I’ve read incel forums before and the things that are said are so extreme and disgusting.
To me, it seems as though they radicalise vulnerable men. |

Don't you think that giving them the oxygen of publicity and discussion gives them more power than they would otherwise have and somehow legitimises them .?
I for one had never heard of them before today. I know a few guys who are disaffected by the imbalance of particularly divorce but other legitimate areas too.(and yes I appreciate women probably have more to contend with than men) If I were of that mind I could now go join one of their websites and, yes possibly be indoctrinated. Sounds to me though like they should be treated the same way as other extremist organisations. |

No. I think calling them out and showing how damaging certain mindsets can be, especially to young men, is needed. Brushing something under the rug doesn’t make it less real, it just means it goes unmonitored. Rather than leave boys and men to find those online communities and have their heads filled with hate, it would be good to allow them to find support through other channels. |

I find incels genuinely terrifying. There are quite a lot on here I think, judging by some of the awful messages I’ve had.
To whoever said incels have mental health problems, some might but definitely not all and it’s not a good idea to put it down to mental illness as it both absolves them of blame for the way they are, and is harmful for genuinely mentally ill people.
Someone else said women can be incels too - they literally can’t as according to incel ideology women can never be involuntarily celibate as we have all the power when it comes to sex. They specifically exclude women from being able to be incels.
Personally, I was “involuntarily celibate” for 12 years and in all that time managed not to r*pe or murder anyone because of it. It’s entirely possible to not have sex for no fault of your own and not turn into a dangerously entitled extremist. I think there are a lot of people on here who can agree with that from their own experience. |

Incels are generally narcissistic, who can't believe that women aren't queueing up to sleep with them, so it must be a plot.
Rather than doing something about their appearance or personality, e.g. lose weight and get fit, or learn a musical instrument, or perhaps get involved with a social hobby or even just mix in social circles, they feel that 'being nice' should lead to sex.
I blame porn for giving them too much stimulation and unrealistic expectations.

A lot of them don’t even believe they should be nice, they think they’re entitled to sex just because they exist, and with the best looking women to boot - they’re aren’t interested in fat or less attractive women. Many of them believe that sex should be forcibly “redistributed” - meaning that attractive women should be basically “given” to them and required to have sex with them. |

Through history there have always been people who were able to make a minority of disaffected people come togther.
The internet has made this easier and increased the number of 'extreme' groups who feel that society or elements within society are to blame for their complaints. Extremist ideologies, whether they be social, political, religious etc are by their nature mostly abhorrent to the majority.
This is a structural weakness of a free society and we need to find the tools to prevent and combat these. Vulnerable people are often manipulated and exploited by these groups. Education, social care and mental health services are so important. Many people are easily radicalised because of mental health issues and or they feel left out by society. Extremist groups offer a 'family' that seems to understand and care for them. We need to catch those people before they fall to prey to being manipulated and radicalised |

Something we find interesting about the incel movement is that it was actually started by a woman. She created the term and created an area for anybody who felt they could not get into a relationship could share their thoughts and experiences. It was principally aimed at women.
Over time it was hijacked by men who turned it into a excuse for misogyny. The original founder left and it was taken over by angry men who deemed themselves entitled to sex and encouraged each other to believe that women should put out for them. Prominent charlatans like Jordan Peterson have stoked the flames too.
It seems to us that when women originally identified as incels they turned in on themselves. They thought it was their own faultfor being unattractive. The men who followed have turned it outward and blame women rather than themselves. They don't consider that they may be unattractive to women and could do something about it. |

I didn’t know that part about the origins, but from my own experience I think you’re right about women turning it inwards. I know I did. I assumed that there was something wrong with me - that I was undesirable, or that my desire for sex was abnormal, or both. It never crossed my mind to think it was a problem with the world and I was a victim of it (which of course it shouldn’t). |

This is not uncommon in my experience. Many women have a very low opinion of themselves, especially how they look. I (Luke) find it very sad.
In 20s I would have identified as an incel if the term had existed, but I thought it was an issue with me. It would never have occurred to me that I was entitled to a relationship or sex. I just thought nobody was interested.
Curiously it wasn't until after I got married that I worked out how to engage with women and that there were plenty who found me attractive.
I think some things can demonstrate to people that they are attractive, such as swinging. Naturism is also great for body confidence. When my OH Hannah first came to a naturist place with me she was nervous about her body, but she saw all sorts there - young and old, big and small, pristine and scarred - and she never looked back. |

That’s exactly what this site has done for me, I do feel more confident now that I did when I joined. I’m not sure it would necessarily work for most incels though! |
