Definitely Zeppelin. Their ability to cross genres from acoustic, blues, synth, rock, prog. You can't pigeon hole them. And to this day, they remain very much an underground band compared to the Beatles. And for every person that says Zeppelin are awesome, 10 will say they are over rated. Cream and Purple, Sabbath, Free, all magnificent but there really was only one band in the 70s |

Of the three I think Zep are the most admired, but I'm not sure how many bands showed an influence in their music.
In terms of influence I think I'd go with Cream. They were the start of the power trio thing and Clapton's guitar-playing has influenced many musicians over the decades. |

I'd say Cream were interested in being authentic.
Zep were inventive. They could lay down a rock classic, but there was also a lot of hurdy gurdy folky hippy stuff in there. They even used a pedal steel guitar.
Purple were into being stars. |
